Qs ' X Xrlgeg THE GIFT OF THE YEARS Thus term marks the close of Cleveland s tenth successful year The school was opened September 9 I9I5 with IVIr H I7 Hoch as prlnclpal One thousand puplls entered Immedlately that splrlt whxch has made Cleveland scholastlcally and competxtlvely the equal lf not the superior of her older slsters began to manlfest Itself Only elght days after the openmg exercises the Chess Club Cleveland s first club was founded More clubs were rapidly organized and before the close of the flrst year fifteen clubs the Student Council and the Beacon had been founded Probably at no other hlgh school ln this clty IS as Iar e a percentage of the student body We have today thlrty two clubs embracmg student could be Interested On April 25 Grover Cleveland Chapter of the National As St I..ou1s has grown as the dlstrlct enrolled m school orgamzatlons every Ime of actxvlty ln which a 1923 a charter was granted the Honor Socnety around Cleveland has Grown so has Cleveland grown Year by year the enrollment has mcreased untll last In une 191 6 the first class was graduated from Cleveland It consisted of nlneteen gxrls and slxteen boys The class of une 1975 has 29I members Whlle not havlng produced a great many champlon teams ln athletxcs Cleveland has very often rumed the champlonshlp asplratlons of other schools Among the champlonshlps won by Cleveland are the basketball champlon shlps of l9l7 l9I8 and I922 the football champlonshlps of I970 and 1974 the baseball champlonshlps of 1921 and I924 and the track cham plonshlp of I9Z3 Although swlmmlng IS not lncluded m the sports spon sored by the Inter scholastlc athletic board the swlmmln team won for Cleveland her first athletlc trophy In forensxc act1v1t1es Cleveland has met wlth more success than ln athletlcs Our boys have partlclpated ln twenty one debates of whlch only slx have been defeats for Cleveland Twlce ID her history Cleveland has won sux successlve debates once to galn permanent possesslon of the Amherst Cup and the second time to ,am two legs on the Prmceton Cup The Olrls have won three debates of the four ln whlch they have partlclpated whlch has secured for them one Iev on the Wellesley Cup The first Beacon was lssued in une 1916 Durlng the ten years of xts exlstence lt has always been the most successful and most democratlc of all our school or amzatlons The first Issue of the Oranve and Blue appeared on November 7 I97I Both of our publlcatlons rank wlth the best of thelr klnd In I97O Mr Hoch resigned as prlncxpal He was succeeded by IVI Maddox who was made superintendent of the St I..ou1s schools ln 1971 IVIr Slater was made prmclpal and Mr Frye assnstant pflnillpal May the commv years prove even more successful than the past to our beloved Alma Mater RICHARD DUNLOP June 25 Illia 7 E K s Q.
