Remembering your guidance and wise counseling while sponsoring the activities of our school . . . Remembering your interest in our accomplishments toward the goal we are all seeking . . . Remembering your faith and understanding which gave us an inspiration to delve deeper into the intricate recesses of true knowledge . . . Remembering your devotion to the cause of education which gave us the desire to seek refinement of character, good citizenship, and deeper understanding . . . We, the Yearbook Staff of 1969, take great pride in displaying our loyalty to you, Mr. Omer Elkins, by dedicating this volume of The Arrow to you. FAREWELL Every year since first coming to Cleveland High School, I have been asked to write a message for the yearbook. I am taking this opportunity to express my sincere apprecia- tion to those who made my short tenure here such an enjoyable one. It has been my pleasure to see the curriculum expanded to further meet the needs of the students. Together we have experienced joy in victory and sadness in defeat in our athletic endeavors. In our academic pursuits we have broadened our horizons and have experienced significant growth. I am sure that the three years we have worked together have laid the founda- tion of experience that we can build upon in the years to come. To those who are Seniors, I hope you can look upon your high school days as produc- tive ones where the seeds of prosperity and happiness were sown. I challenge you to look to the future as an opportunity to use the experiences of the past as a building block to shape a better tomorrow. After starring for a year on the Indian’s J.V. squad, Jeff was promoted to the varsity team where he quickly made his debut into the elite of high school athletes. The following year, as a sophomore, Jeff won a position on the All-County, All-District, and All-Southwest Virginia teams, and was nomi- nated recipient of the Russell County Sportsmanship Award. Before the close of the 67-68 season, Jeff broke his way into the 1,000-point club and in February, the All-County, All-District, and All- Southwest Virginia Teams welcomed him back. As Jeff moved into his final season, sportswriters and college scouts kept an eye on the man who might very well become Virginia’s All-Time Career Scoring Champion. Before the season was over, averaging 30 points a game, Cleveland’s scoring wizard edged past the 15-year record to become Virginia’s All-Time Scoring Champion with a career total of 2,158 points. We extend to Jeff a most hearty, “Congratulations!” and wish him much success as he enters a new era in his basketball career.
