Text from Pages 1 - 114 of the 1968 volume:

. . . ‘To everything there is a season: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance ’ Ecclesiastes 3: 1, 4 FOREWORD “To everything there is a season,” and now that we have completed another school year, we can recall some of the seasons passed at Cleveland High School-a season of newness for the Fres hmen those first few days of school, a season of familiarity as the Sophomores become accustomed to the surroundings, a season of buying and selling as the Juniors prepare for the prom, and a season of ending and beginning as the Seniors complete their high school education and prepare for the future. The year was filled with hard work and play, disappointment and success, sorrow and rejoicing, all the experiences which are so vital to the shaping of our lives. Realizing that each class must pass through these seasons, we open the pages to an eventful and exciting year. % 2 THE ARROW Cleveland High School Cleveland, Virginia A time to 4 to Play . , . . 5 . . . A time to Work Although our academic courses take a tremendous amount of work— they give us a new understanding of the world and the people around us. The faculty has shown us there is work in study, yet in learning there is joy. Dedication Wishing to recognise j ersonaI integriiy and sincerity, unselfish ser ice, sympathetic understand- ing of young people, and earnest dedication to the mission of challenging students to achieve their highest potentialities, the ARROW STAFF dedicates the 1968 ARROW to Mrs. Helen Owens. Omer E. Elkins, Principal Rosemary Dotson, Secretary jr nMINISTRATiON IN TRANSITION In recent years profound social changes have been occurring in the United States. We are the original affluent society, and our astonishing technology prom- ises more material abundance, more leisure, and more education. Yet our society is beset with unrest, social protest, and even violence. The emergence of a mass society and the resulting changes in family life, iritergroup relations and social values, have posed new and serious challenges to traditional attitudes and values. We live in the most prosperous nation in all history. Yet we have the problems of other countries past present, less fortunate than we. To the graduating class, I offer this challenge: There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that is your own self. You must be n there, not outside, not on other people. That comes afterm ' ards when you have worked on yourself. Omer E. Elkins Charles C. Wright, Asst. Prin. Many C.H.S. students received a variety of awards for outstanding achievements. A time to WEEP .... A time to LAUGH . . . . In any phase of Athletics there is a time to weep and a time to laugh, and we did our share during the year. From the beginning of the basketball season, we mingled laughter with our cheers. The Russell County Tournament brought elation when we won the first game of the tournament and perhaps tears of JOY when we won the county Champion- ship. Our last game in the District Tournament left us in real tears. But we began to look forward to track, baseball, and , . . next year. School Spirit Charlie Artrip and Mike Combs speed down the court in a fast break. “The Highlights of The Season” Otis Collins and Terry Powers, proud team captains, received the trophy for the Rus- sell County Tournament from Mr. Elkins while Coach Myrl Allen looks on. The cheerleaders ralhed team spirit and led the fans in cheers. The Cleveland crowd tensely watches the action during a game with Honaker. rises as the season progresses Otis Collins comes down from a rebound in the typical Collins style. Jeff Owen, with an average game score of 26, made his thousandth point at the Pocahontas game. 49 Varsity Basketball STANDING - Assistant Coach Carl Bailey, Mike Combs, Jeff Owen, Marvin Amos, Stanley Ferrell, Otis Collins, James Osborne, Coach Myrl Allen.
