1967 ARROW Cleveland High School Cleveland, Virginia Editor - JoAnne Fleenor 3usiness Manager - Jayne Taylor Contents Administration 9 Classes 15 Activities 37 Features 51 Athletics 57 Seniors 63 Advertisements 81 2 Prom Oueen Miss Sandra Barton m mB s “V i A varied school program works to meet the needs of students. A reading laboratory is a new unit that is in use this year. Teach- ers work and demonstrate to help the students learn, and students themselves study, give reports, prepare projects, or perhaps stage a mock trial. School life is made of many activities- -hard practice to make the band performance perfect- -actual dissection of the frog to help in the understanding of all life- -folk dancing to facilitate physical co-ordination- -the proud moment of in- stallation of S.C.A. officers for the new year--and finally those moments of relaxation and fellowship in the cafeteria. 6 In Memoriam Dewey W. Smi th For years a familiar figure around the halls of Cleveland, Dewey was a modest, soft-spoken man, who loved people and always found time to talk with them. He was never too busy to offer help or too hurried to be genuinely interested in people. While here, he left his own mark on the lives of others which cannot be erased or replaced. 8 Respect Mr. Omer E. Elkins, Principal B.S. -Lincoln Memorial University M.S.-East Tennessee State University WORLD OF CHANGE The closing of another school year marks the achievement of another plateau in life for most public school youths. For most students it means the successful completion of another grade in school, and the prospect of another summer of fun and relaxation. However, to those who are seniors, the closing of school marks the end of their high school days, and the be- ginning of college, or embarking upon a chosen career. Every student, whether this summer means vacationing or the beginning of a career, should keep one thing in mind about the world around him - it is changing more quickly than we can imagine. Academic training can give an invaluable store of educational and technical knowledge which is of immeasurable material value. It prepares us to meet the world as it exists today, and gives us a foundation on which to build for tomorrow. But, unless we continually build upon this foundation, we will be lost in the forest of knowledge about us. Let all of us experience the pleasures that living brings. Let us enjoy the spirit of competition that exists in the careers we choose, knowing that successful living must be based on a constant enlargement of our store o f knowledge. 10 Omer E. Our school, our teachers, our activities, our interests -- all have changed. But now we real- ize that our attitude is not one of a student first entering high school -- it is one of understand- ing that we are now on our own and that our high school days are over. We will miss all our friends, our teachers, and our building. It has been five great years and we have enjoyed and loved it all. WM.
