Jhe 1964 Editor - Sandee Alsup Business Manager - Judy Fleenor 2 Jorecuorcf FROM OLD TO NEW--Cleveland High School has come a long way from 1923 to 1963. The common, conservative lines of the old Cleveland High School have yielded to the trim, original, lines of the new Cleveland High School. The students, the teachers, and the activities have changed little out- wardly; but within, progressive metamorphosis is taking place to keep pace with the modernistic trend exemplified by the new sch ool. However, the new Cleveland High School is not completely free from the old. Towering high above the modern structure and always haunting our memory is the old bell which has long been a symbol of our school. We of the Arrow staff have attempted to give you a truly memorable picture of the new Cleveland High School, its students, its teachers, and its activities. Afma TKale ' In fair Virginia ' s lofty mountains Reared against the sky. Proudly stands our Cleveland High School As the years go by. Chorus: Forward ever” be our motto Conquer and prevail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater. Cleveland High, all hail! Come on team, let ' s get together Throw that ball and fight. We’ll be faithful to you ever, Cleveland, blue and white. Chorus: Forward ever be our motto Conquer and prevail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater. Cleveland High, all hail! Cherished by our sons and daughters, Though we ' re far from thee. May we ever live to honor Thy dear memory. Chorus: Forward ever” be our motto Conquer and prevail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater. Cleveland High, all hail! 3 CONTENTS Dedication 12 Faculty 14 Classes 20 Activities 40 Features 56 Athletics 64 Elementary 72 Advertisements 86 e are acmq our own Dr. G. H. Givens, present division superintendent of Russell County schools and the first full term principal of Cleveland High School, shakes hands with pioneer citizen Utah Counts as the 850 lb. bell mounted in the building cupola tolls greetings to open-house visitors. The bell was purchased by these two men and other friends of the school forty years ago and represents the only piece of permanent equipment to be moved from the old downtown school to the new building. Just before admitting the public to open-house tours several PTA and faculty members make last minute detailed arrangements at the re- freshment center in the cafeteria. Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Campbell of Cleveland browse through a portion of the five thousand volumes catalogued in the school library. Upon invitation of the Student Council Dr. Givens deliv- ers the first address of the new year to the student general assembly. 7 HHH MPERtNttlHM CLERK ON. ARCHITECTS Patience, fortitude, and self-control are necessary for mastering the mechanics of lockers. Opening one of those things re- quires talent during the few minutes between classes. The Seniors ' class rings arrived in late September. For days afterward they could be seen shaking hands to show off their prized possessions. When Sophomores begin saying Friends, Romans, we know that Juluis Caesar is mighty yet! And Juniors study Sandburg, Frost, Thornton Wilder — and those grandiloquent vocabulary words. Seniors struggle with Beowulf and Chaucer and find how much there really is to this subject called English. UJie of 7 )orJ?incj together In Home Economics girls learn the fundamentals of cooking a meal, making a dress, and car- ing for a family. College Day, college entrance exams, and ad- mission to college keep seniors and Mrs. Morgan busy. The newly-formed Art Club has sparked an interest in bulletin boards and exhibit cases. 10 To a person for whom we have the greatest admiration and respect, we dedicate our 1964 ARROW. We realize that it is largely his initiative, encouragement, and ability to see beyond the brick, the MR. HUGH R. MORGAN, JR. mortar and the grain of wood that have provided us with an incentive for academic attainment, cultural enrichment and esthetic enjoyment. His educational standards are instrumental in inspiring us to improve our own standards of achieve- ment and citizenship. His principles and integrity serve as a help and a guide in our education and daily life. The respect and esteem he has for the worth of an individual have led us to develop concern for all people. For all these things we proudly and gratefully dedicate the ARROW to our friend and principal. 12 Hugh R. Morgan, Jr., Principal B. A. Emory Henry M. Ed. University of Virginia THE GREAT BIG LITTLE THINGS . . . TEN FOLD An occasional and appreciative smile . . . the indicator to personality. A degree of seriousness ... in considering the light and the burdensome side of being. A respect ... for experience, for age, for excellence, and for differing opinion. Considered judgment ... in making decisions that really matter and in the execution of their principle. Simple courtesy and exhibited good manners . . . the direct result of self-discipline and family breeding. A cultivated capacity to enjoy the esthetic . . . art, literature, music, and the beauties that abound. Determination . . . the driving force to succeed, an approach to perfection, that inner and personal urge to seek a place among the stars. Realization . . . the recognition of the inadequacy of man, of the Power that transcends, and the impossibility of absolute understanding. Acceptance of . . . the truths of association, the necessity of social balance and the cultivation of lasting friend- ships. H. R. Morgan, Jr. Samuel E. Askins B.S., Clemson M. Ed., U. Va.
