For years schools have taught the three R's : reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. At Cleveland this year we have placed additional emphasis on the fourth R 1 responsibili- ty-responsibility for citizenship, responsibility for leader- ship, responsibility for service, responsibility for learning. This fourth R is, perhaps, the most important one. Cleveland has assumed a role of leadership with this emphasis, Our students have experienced new opportunities for learning to assume responsibility through the no-bell sys- tem, the Quarter Plan with its additional subject opportuni- ties, the new independent study program, and team teaching with its large and small group experiences. These new pro- grams demonstrate our faculty's recognition of the indivi- dualistic needs of each student: the adoption of these pro- grams indicates the confidence of the staff in the ability of our young people to handle well the responsibilities that accompany new freedoms, Very timely indeed is the emphasis ofthis year's annual on the importance ofthe individual.
