I AQUILA Published by the l967 yearbook staff Cleveland High School-Seattle, Washington During the past few years, each individual? environment has expanded to include the entire universe, instead of merely the whole ggorld. Q 'Q 02 4:65276 ' Q34 Q31 K 'QKQZCQ An individual must be able to feel not only part ofa larger socie- ty, but also a separate, unique being. The individual can no longer fall back on established values. He must loohfor other ways to be- come secure, thus he expresses himself physically through dress, or spiritually through writing. Man is present in a world where he decides for hirnsebf how he will live. 3 Each person orients hirnsehf to reality. He a'irects his own life, ana' sets his own goals. The 'indioicliial must convince other persons, ana' hiniseM that he is where he belongs, anal that he belongs where he is. 5 l 3 I at . mne- ' 4 iv ! Q, N 'i 4!52t2Q,- .iw ff? Hefeels lost, andso turns to someone who has already been through the dijicult stages of adolescence. He learns what thatperson has already experienced, and his life goes forward with greater meaning, and he becomes more deeply grateful to that person,'. . . . . . .his teacher. 13 For years schools have taught the three R's : reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. At Cleveland this year we have placed additional emphasis on the fourth R 1 responsibili- ty-responsibility for citizenship, responsibility for leader- ship, responsibility for service, responsibility for learning. This fourth R is, perhaps, the most important one. Cleveland has assumed a role of leadership with this emphasis, Our students have experienced new opportunities for learning to assume responsibility through the no-bell sys- tem, the Quarter Plan with its additional subject opportuni- ties, the new independent study program, and team teaching with its large and small group experiences. These new pro- grams demonstrate our faculty's recognition of the indivi- dualistic needs of each student: the adoption of these pro- grams indicates the confidence of the staff in the ability of our young people to handle well the responsibilities that accompany new freedoms, Very timely indeed is the emphasis ofthis year's annual on the importance ofthe individual. One of the advantages of a democracy is assurance to the individual that his rights are important enough to be protect- ed by the state, Only under a system such as ours is a person guaranteed freedom to pursue his thoughts, dreams and desires to their ultimate fruition. Thus, we answer all totali- tarian societies. At Cleveland vve follow the guidelines outlined by our na- tional government. We believe in the abilities of each individ- ual Eagle to attain his highest goals. lt is the responsibility of the entire staff at Cleveland High School to protect and nurture the ambitions of our students. Thus, with the teacher as a guide, we have the necessary environment so each Ea- gle may follow his life's dreams. Therefore, every Eagle should have dreams as large as the mountains over which he soars. 6, rf I To no other persons does he owe such thanks MR. HEHBERTJOHNSON MR. STANLEYJONES' MISS LUANAJOSVOLD MH. They remember how they, as sophomores, first came to Cleveland: and how they, as juniors, advanced in knowl- edge and maturity. A penny drive, a carwash, the Senior Cruise. and the Senior Prom were just part of their busy calendar, as seniors. The school will remember the class of '67 as a lively, spirited group that contributed to the traditionally friendly atmosphere of Cleveland. DOUG MCKNIGHT JULIE ROSTEN President Secretary JOE GARBINI KRISTY HENDRICKSON Treasurer Inter-High Representative Every student is an essential part of his school The Associated Students of Cleveland experienced a year of varied activities. Sophomore orientation started things off be- fore school began when incoming sophomores were welcomed as new members ofthe student body. In October, parents. teachers, and students enjoyed a morning meal at the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast. In November, students had an oppor- tunity to participate in student government at the leadership conference, entitled Leap '66. In December, the student body saw the faculty play a close game with the KJR all-stars. and a Faculty Christmas Tea was given to honor the administration. Many bumps and bruises were felt by those who attended the 'Rinky Riot roller skating party in February. In these, and all other activities, each individual student was urged to partici- pate. The Student Council, consisting of: Roll Room presidents, presidents of Girls' Club and Boys' Club, Class presidents, Jour- nal and Annual editors, and an athletic representative, acted as the governing body of Cleveland. It was the duty of the Council to work with these officers in order to provide a link between each student and his school government. The sixty-member Council met after school, one day a week. He jogs many miles a day to build up his stamina and devotes unlimited time in hopes of becoming a champ. This year's cross country team, under the coaching of Mr. John Richardson, showed great improvement. Few Iettermen and the lack of experience were factors which hurt the team effort. The team picked Bob Cason as team captain and Bruce Cameron as the inspirational award winner. A string of victories which included wins over Gar- field and Franklin brought the Eagles to a mid-season third place in the Southern Division. The varsity consisted of not only of seniors but many under classmen who will probably make up the nucleus of next year's team. Two outstanding performers who provided bright spots dur- ing the season were Steve Dallas, who led the team with his powerful and consistant hitting, and Ron Davis, with his outstanding fielding abilities. Clifton Smith the 1967 Cleveland tennis team attained the ultimate goal of earning the All-Metro Championship. The victory over the northern division champs, Lincoln, was the final obstacle before the honor was achieved by the high spirited squad led by Gordon Yee, No. T man. From the beginning of the season, the Eagle netmen had high hopes of receiving Metro honors. Their daily rigorous practices included a running program to de- velop speed, and endurance. For game experience, matches were played within the team. The payoff was evident in the overwhelming victories over Rainier Beach, Garfield, and Sealth. The last match of the Head Coach Mr. J. Clifton Smith season ended in an impressive win over West Seattle which clinched the Southern Division Championship for Cleveland. The other matches were a little more exciting but the competent Eagles managed an un- defeated season. The primary purposes of the club are to unite athletes and to promote admirable standards of citizenship and scholarship. During the year, under the direction of Mr. Chuck Tarbox, and led by the three officers, Bob Cason, Bruce Cameron, and Jerry Bowman, the lettermen have had an active program. On Cleveland Day they managed the putt-putt golf booth and held their annual slave auction. They also ushered at all bas- ketball games. Another important contribution was the dona- tion of twenty-five pints of blood to the community. The Lettermen's Club, by striving as a unit to help others, has truly established itself as a commendable organization of Cleveland High School.
