Looking Back . . . Cleveland O, Franklin 7 Cleveland opened the football season against arch-rival Franklin. The only touchdown came late in the first quarter after Cleveland had fumbled deep in their own territory. Franklin outplayed Cleveland both offensively and defensively to win the close battle. Cleveland O, Lincoln 6 Improved after the opener, the boys dropped this conflict because of early game mistakes. Cleveland had two chances to score late in the game, but a pass from Deyak fell short of a first down on the twenty-two yard line, ending the second march. Lincoln took over and ran out the clock. Cleveland 7, Queen Anne 6 Cleveland's defense was spectacular in a one-point win. Queen Anne scored early in the second period but Cleveland, undaunted, went ahead at the half. Neither team had any big chances in the second half. Deyak and Schattenkerk starred for Cleveland in their upset victory in the mud. Cleveland 13, Ballard I2 Elliott Gleason and the rest of the Ballard backfield ran through the Cleveland line easily for the first three quarters. Woodrow Roberts scored the first touchdown with a pass from Deyak, in the middle of the final period. Brandli made the conversion, which proved decisive. With only one minute to go, Cleveland took to the air in desperation. Another pass from Deyak to Roberts, this one for forty yards into the end-zone, won one of the biggest upsets of the year. Cleveland 18, West Seattle 25 Eagles were flying high for the West Seattle game. Cleveland scored twice in the first quarter. Deyak scored on an end run set up by a twenty-four yard pass to Matsuoka. Shortly afterward, Deyak again scored after Kobuki had recovered a fumble. West Seattle, headed by Lee Grandquist, caught fire on big drives through the line to win in the final half. Cleveland 7, Sealth 20 After a week's bye, Cleveland returned to the schedule against keyed-up Sealth. Cleveland had several chances to score, but intercepted passes and fumbles interfered, giving Sealth the victory. Cleveland 6, Roosevelt 6 Scoreless until the middle of the fourth quarter, Cleveland scored on a Roosevelt bobble. With only six seconds remaining, Roosevelt executed a twenty yard pass to the end-zone to tie the game. Cleveland 0, Garfield 12 Eagles surprised Garfield in the first half, holding the Bulldogs to a O-0 tie. Garfield marched to pay dirt late in the third quarter on a running play and scored again minutes later when a desperation play failed by Cleveland. The team left the field with a moral victory.
