N., KR ,J if . .... .-- ' , ,, .... ,,...:: , Z , The sound of planes is familiar here at Cleveland. One is constantly aware that this is the age ot flight, especially it one is on the third tloor where huge iets continually roar by the windows as they leave or approach Boeing runway. Boeing's, a maior factor in Seattle's world-wide air eminence, is the very lifeblood of the South District. Many ot the parents of Cleveland students earn their living there, where intensive research and applied science have led to phenomenal progress. Cleveland anticipates this progress. Here the student learns the beginnings of the skills, the knowledge, the attitudes, and the ideals which result in a tiner America. Hence we have clio-,Q-ii as our theme the progress of the South District exemplified by Boeing's. aiszQtesvs.sr Mi53j2EQOQi3fE- Mstiftfgxiihtit-iifQ CENTER sun in sci-mi. ctssima rate. 1 V4 .f si.c..e .,,.. . SPORTS Engineers -J As 707 goes overhead, birds fly tor cover, men and women stare, children gape cmd everything stops in the classroom This is the air age, age ot speed, age of flight. Many things are new but we still have the same urge to eat, and here we have some cooks of to- morrow looking at a steak or chop of today. Educational trips are an important phase of classroom ac- tivity tor they give the student first hand information concerning the subject he is studying. fi, The air age is a busy age, but students take time out from their busy schedule to think of others. These class officers are busy counting the money collected from the March of Dimes cam- paign. There was also the 1-EN, 29 ffl Like planes which carry one to far-off lands, our honor able drama class trans ported the faculty and stu dents to a distant atmos phere and environment. The class performed a va- riety of plays throughout the year with a helping hand from Miss Raine. The senior play, Time Out For Ginger , was a huge suc- cess and many skits were performed at pep assem- blies. Hglpmelw Nr ,Q-Q WL C l campaign for Red Cross, in which students took an ac- tive interest in helping others. The Boys' Club Social Serv- ice Committee collected money for Christmas baskets to be given to needy families. The roll rooms also did their share by collecting canned goods for food baskets to be distributed for Thanksgiving dinners. The Christmas season was a ioyous time of year for Cleveland. The halls were decked with holly, roll rooms celebrated with parties, clothes were collected for those who needed them, carols were played between class, and sung by the choir during class time. Added to all of this was a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, which was genuinely admired as it stood in the main hall. I .4 'ii' Planes flying overhead certainly didn't make these cakes fall. Here are the proud winners of the Cake Baking Contest with Mr. lmus, one of the iudges. The Cake Baking Contest was one of the many activities held during Crazy Ways Week. There were Be Kind to Teachers Day, The Boys' Club, among many other worthwhile activities, planned the Fath- er-Son Banquet, where dads and sons had a night out together to rehash the football season. Here an award is being given for a iob well done on the toot- ball team. Friendship Day, Snow White Day with everyone wearing white, and also Sadie Hawkins Day with the timid boys gaining long sought recognition. The climax of the week was Cleveland Day, with every- one wearing the Red and White and at- tending a carnival or dance. The Torch Club officers and Mr. Gar- rison admire the Gold Seal pin earned by Kim Hartley. Everyone has admired Kim's courage and has gained faith from her excellent fight which has earned her a scholastic record. The Torch Club officers had many such proud mo- ments, as they gave recognition for outstanding work accomplished by Torch Club members. Many scholarships were won by these deserving students. These beautiful young ladies the Double Nonnette enter tained for many assemblies banquets and luncheons They, with other musical groups have produced music of every mood and style. Choirs trios quartets instrumental groups have all contributed to this bustling organization Cleveland High School. Up to the time of this printing, the team has won two and lost two, which even at this stage, is the best record Cleveland has ever had. The squad centers around the lettermen which include Hideo Kato, senior and captain, George Pearson, senior, Quinn Chinn, iunior, and three sophomores, Richard Woo, Jerry Akita and Al McFadden. To round out the team, sopho- mores and freshmen are strongly vieing for the top positions. Coach Dolstad is enthusiastic about the T956 tennis team. We should end in the first division as the team is the strongest in our history, Coach Dolstad declared. lf the boys play as well as they are playing this year, we should win the championship in a year or two.
