Editor CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Cleveland Celebrates Twenty-fifth Anniversary A A E all PRINCIPAL I E MR. HOMER DAVIS Where does Cleveland find itself on its Silver Anniversary? After twenty-five years, Cleveland is a well-established school and truly a credit to the district. It has grown steadily, not only in size, but in scholarship, in student participation in govern- ment and number of activities. Cleveland has seen many changes since 1927. Now we're looking forward to additional facilities made possible by the school bond issue, that will enable Cleveland to continue being the progressive, energetic school it has always been. VICE-PRIN CIP MR. RAY IMUS Cleveland's twenty-fifth anniversary coincides with Seattle's Centennial as a year of celebration and marked progress. In the cold month of january, 1927, a small group of students gathered up their books in the old Georgetown school and marched up to the acropolis on the hill to take their rooms in the new, spacious Cleveland Junior-Senior High School. Today in spite of crowded halls, congestion, surrounded by twelve portables and other growing pains, Cleveland is forging ahead along with the community she serves. With the promise of funds for the expansion of our building the eyes of every Cleveland Eagle are looking upward into a jet-propelled sky with new hopes, new confidences and a belief that greater progress and achievement are just ahead. But when that one golden moment comes, all too soon, it leaves the seniors with mingled, happy re- membrances of their past four years of Cleveland. These memories will be varied, but they will never be forgotten, only mellowed as years go by. Who can forget the first time he wore his senior ping or the tingling exstatic excitement of our win- ning football gameg the fun of the P.-T.A. dancesg the happy confusion of lunch time, the echoing Christmas carols sung in the halls by the choir. These and many other fun-filled events make it with regret that we now bid farewell to Cleveland High. First Raw: BRUCE ANDERSON-Boys' Club I 2 3 4. Ambi- tion: Farmer. ICRS at Xt 21- CLASS OFFICERS Roger Beclell Carol Nelson Mary Sue McCoffree Don Aoki This year's junior class has really proved itself a capable and energetic group of students. These industrious fellows and gals have distin- guished themselves in scholastics and activities. Our Boys' Club and Girls' Club, Torch Club, athletics and other important school organizations contain a large percentage of members from the junior class. The graduating seniors will leave positions that will be filled by these hard-working juniors. No one is worried for they are certain to do outstanding work considering their past achievements. Watch this class -the class of 1955. They show promise as the future leaders of Cleveland High. Here's a group of students that's really going places. Who? Why the sophomores, of course. These active students are destined to do big things for Cleveland as part of next year's upperclassmen. The Sophomore Spookers Spree, a Halloween party for sophomores only, was the first outstanding accomplishment. Brimming over with entertainment furnished by sophomore talent, all were unanimous that this was really a spree worthy of the sophomore class. For Cleveland Day, the class of '54 took over the refreshments in the cafeteria, furnishing also relaxing, soothing music. It's been said that they even had quite a few couples dancing in there instead of in the gym. The Girls' Club, Boys' Club, Torch Club, song and cheer leaders, contain members from this live- wire class. But they don't stop with just these organ- izations. All school-supported activities and athletics are strongly backed by the effervescent sophomores. This year's successful Red Cross drive is an example of the work done by this service-minded group. Soon these students will be the leaders of Cleve- land. With the background they already have, we need not fear that the class of '54 will fail their Alma Mater. Their enthusiasm and willingness are vital elements of Cleveland's student body. The class of '55 has many bright prospects in the galaxy of Cleveland leaders. Some of their talent and originality was discovered during the Freshman Party, which featured entertainment provided by members from their endowed class. Girls' Club is fully aware of their capability, in the form of the hardworking girls on the Freshmen Auxiliary. These gals do all the dirty work for the other Girls' Club committees. Drill team is also strongly backed by freshmen girls. Not to be left out are the frosh boys. What would our second and third team ath- letics be without these eager members of the fresh- men class. Although Torch Club is out of the freshmen reach, many are studiously and industrious- ly preparing for next year's membership. These students are proud of Cleveland and sup- port all school functions, from athletic events, to the many organizations around school. In three years Cleveland will be in the hands of these students. Have you got all the drawings in yet, Roy? flanet, don't sit there! I left the glue on that chair. These are just a few of the comments that were piercing the hall around 308 as the Annual Staff, otherwise normal stu- dents, frantically worked to meet their deadline. Have you spoken to any of these peo- ple during the last month and received anything but silence and a dazed look? Don't feel insulted, it's just that their overwrought brains were filled with thoughts of the Aquila, and how they were possibly going to pass Comp. IV and still get the annual out on time. The fellows richly deserved it. In a driving rain Don Glitschka quarterbacked his team magnificently. The other three backs, Dave Guion, Al Roberts and Bob Burns, played a beautiful game. In the rest of the games, the team fought with all it had, but they couldn't win. Open- ing the football season in the Jamboree, they were held to a scoreless tie by Queen Anne. In the first game of the season they were beaten by fourth place Lincoln, 8-O. Ballard's city champions beat the Eagles 25-O, display- ing a good running and passing attack. The Hilltoppers faced the Roosevelt Roughriders with renewed vigor, but were beaten 7-0 on a pass in the end zone to 6-foot 6-inch jim Coshow. The next game was the game the class of 1952 will never forget, the game which Cleveland won 14-6. The game with West Seattle was a heart-breaker. Cleveland was holding West Seattle. Neither team could score, but the Eagles were knocking. In the third quarter with the ball on their own 15, Cleveland was about to punt when the only had pass from center of the season forced jim Collins to run with the ball instead. Jim was caught behind the goal and West Seattle won 2-0. The Eagles' next opponent was Garfield. Garfield had not won a game all season but they were fired up for the Eagles and won easily, 20-O. The last game of the season found Cleveland playing its traditional rivals, the Franklin Quakers. In the Franklin home- coming, despite a gallant effort by the Eagle eleven, the Red and White lost 20-O. Bernie Fuglestad, big left end, made All- City on the basis of his fine defensive play. Roy Ikeda won the Inspirational Award, and Bob Burns and Bernie Fuglestad won the award for being the best back and best line- man, respectively. They established themselves as giant killers by beating both Queen Anne and Ballard when the Grizzlies and Beavers were in first place. The Eagles dropped the first game of the season to Ballard 46-56, but came back strong to defeat West Seattle in their second start 49-28. The most exciting game of the season was the second Ballard-Cleveland game played in the Eagles' gym. The week before, the Eagles had upset the apple cart by knocking Queen Anne out of first place. For the first half of the game the lead see-sawed back and forth. Midway through the third quarter the Eagles started to connect with their shots and pulled into the lead to stay, the final score being Cleveland 50, Ballard 45. Dm Nubian Doa Wktte 'Y VMI. 'Rick 'Vw-kfiv-Q-rs The Eagles ended the regular season with a 6-6 won-lost record, tied for third place with Franklin and Queen Anne. To break the tie Franklin and Queen Anne played with Franklin winning. Since one win was all that was needed to get into the playoff, Franklin was automatically in, making necessary a playoff between Queen Anne and Cleveland. The game was played at the Lincoln gym with Queen Anne beating the Eagles 42-29. This broke the tie and Cleveland ended the season officially in fifth place. Ron Foisy and Dan Niksich made another first for Cleveland by both being chosen on the All-City team. Dan ended the season with 173 points as the second highest scorer in the city, losing the title to Bruno Boin of Franklin by one point. By awarding him the lnspirational Award, the team once more showed how much Ron Foisy is respected by his fellow players. The Eagle baseball team is riding high in first place, having won seven and lost only one. Senior Babe Wehrwein has been carrying the pitching load with great success. Babe has won five games and lost none, and has pitched thirty-six scoreless innings. In the first game of the season five runs were scored against him and they were all unearned. Babe is backed up by two other good boys, freshman Dick Minice and junior Don Mozzone. Although the pitching has been good, credit must be given also to the rest of the team for their fine fielding and timely hitting. There are only four seniors on this year's team: pitcher Babe Wehrwein, shortstop Ron Foisy, outfielders Dick Bronson and Ray Willfong are playing their last year in an Eagle uniform. With most of the varsity back, and a good second team com- ing up, next year's Eagle team should be even better than this yearls. DAVE CURRIE rack Cleveland's track team started the season off in grand style this year. The cindermen brought home the first Cleveland track victory in four years when they defeated West Seattle. At this writing that was the only regular track meet, but the Eagles won three practice games before the season started. Duane Gudmundson, miler, has shown that he'll make the All-City team again this year. Duane has beaten all his oppon- ents by a good distance. Coach Currie will have to come up with a shot-putter from the second team, for all three of the varsity shots, Jack Sturman, Bob Burns and Phil Rich, are serving their last year in an Eagle cinder suit. Dave Guion and Raye Murray, senior pole-vaulters, have shown good form thus far and should be up there this year. Darrell Gookstetter, quarter-miler, and Ken Pinyerd, half- miler, are in their fourth year and will be missed next season. It was a musical comedy revue with songs by Miss Raine, Miss Hart, Mrs. Lane and Mr. Ottum melodically sung by members of the Senior Choir. The Idyl provided two nights of scintillating entertainment. The dances were under the direction of Miss Brit- ton and Miss Raine. Principal leads were taken by: Pat Huif, Marilee Winn, Fred Kuhblank, Forrest Huff, Cliff Attwood, Carol Resner and Bob Joiner. The whole vodvil was under the supervision of Miss Phimister. if 'A' 'A' On Om' Street, this year's senior play, marked a first in Cleveland history. It was the first time that the lead in the senior play was taken by the mother in the play rather than the younger generation. Marilee Winn QFriday night castj and Carolyn Kellet CSaturday night castb played the part of a domineering mother who tried to run everybodyls life, especially those of her two daughters, but who found out the hard way that the simple way of life is really the best. The leading parts were taken by: CFriday nightj Marilee Winn, Bob Joiner, Shirley Hatlen, Illeana Oliver and Dean Hodg- son, CSaturday nightj Carolyn Kellet, Jack Sturman, Eileen Jacobs, Barbara Bianchi and Mickey Moberg. This was one of the most enjoyable casts that I have had the pleasure of working with, said Miss Blanche Phimister, director of the play. Q Cleveland P ersonalities ,f sew-NOOL Spmrr Jua.w.33f.a.
