Heights had the second largest number of semi-finalists in the state of Ohio and in the Greater Cleveland area. These students scored in the top one- half of one percent nationally, but comprised well over two and one-half percent of graduating Heights seniors. The twenty-five National Merit Commended students listed below scored in the top two percent of seniors who took the qualifying test in the fall of 1976. In the past, students wishing to study these courses had to fol- low an independent study program, meeting in work groups during free time. In 1977-78, the number of students interested in second- year Physics and Biology increased to an amount sufficient for the estab- lishment of structured class time every day.
