New Dummies for Unlike other showcase dis- plays, this model is a real dummy. In September of this school year, teacher Elroy Tscheitt organized a program to research various methods of getting students to notice school showcases. Tscheitt dis- cussed the new program with on-the-spot news reporter Ozzie Pollyton, Students tend to ignore signs in display cases, Tscheitt explained. Dining on cafeteria scraps and leftover candy bars, Joe dwelled in the ruins - unseen, unheard of, and unknown. tSee pho- tograph at the leftJ ,. .. ' V. - ' Apparently, the ordeal began ' ' 1' ' when Joe left home to seek his fortune. Dressed in jeans, carrying a tattered blanket and a few pennies in his pocket, Joe boarded a train to Florida. To his cha- grin, he overslept and awoke just in time to return to Cleve- land. Having nowhere else to go, he slipped into the school through an open window and camped out in the stu- dent lounge. Although he originally planned to stay only one night, he found the place satisfactory. Reflected Joe, It's been nice to be independent, but I'm glad to be going home again. vi-Apparently the two students, inspired by an episode of Star . M1 The Unit A Class Council, headed by the emperor of Bishkonia, Mark Bishko, accomplished many projects during the '76-'77 year. Their home- coming spirit started the year off well when the Junior Tiger float placed third in the float contest. On December 10, a Unit A sponsored dance was well attended, and at Christmas time the council directed a canned food drive which provided food for needy resi- dents of Cleveland Heights. The coun- cil hopes for continued support from Unit A members and are planning for an even better year in '78. Barron Alexander Pausley The School Board dubbed the 1976-1977 school year as the Year of the Curricu- lum. After completion of the twenty million dollar renovation project, full at- tention was aimed toward improvements in the school district's course of- ferings. The School Board also took beginning steps towards reducing and pre- venting racial isolation. 59 This year Heights High has seen many improvements, not ADMINISTRATIOI the least of which has been the improved relations be- tween students and teachers, as well as between the stu- dents themselves. This improved atmosphere has not gone unnoticed by our administrative staff; Dr. Bernardo, Mr. lyGalley, and Miss VanSickle. iSome have attributed the improvement to the renovation iof the building; but it is obvious that without our princi- ipal and assistant principals things would have continued in the same manner as just a few years back. Thanks to the perseverance of our administration, Heights High has been given the second chance it needs by the Community, the teachers, and most importantly, by the students. Miss Bernice VanSickle The Great and Powerful Wizard of Heights -Dr. Patrick C. Bernardo' Secretaries: Mrs. Sara Kraft, Mrs. Annette Messina, Mrs. Ruth Knauss, Mrs. Betty Bixby, Mrs. Rae Blott 60 Mr. Ed Galley UNIT B Principal Paul J. Wisely and his group of hardworking counselors, Virginia Bica, Mary K. Graham, and Dorothy Icove prepared sev- eral programs throughout the year which were all of special inter- est to seniors. They worked hard to help each senior find a post- high school program suited for his or her character. The senior class took part in a career exploration program. The State Department gave Heights High a grant to help students dis- cover their aptitude and ways in which they can use it. Heights High seniors felt that their unit principal and counselors took a sincere interest in their education and welfare. As a result, they can leave Heights with fond memories of their senior year and face their next endeavours prepared and confident. Miss Mary K. Graham Mrs. Dorothy W. Icove Miss Virginia Bica 61 UNIT A 62 Mr. Frank Ross The sun is rising on the class of '78. Being next in line for graduation, the students and staff of Unit A have begun to prepare themselves for the hectic year which lies ahead. Supplying information about pre-college testing and college information conferences has kept everybody in the Unit A office on their toes. And, of course, there were the usual jobs; keeping records and transcripts up to date, and helping the students with all of their various problems. All in all, the Unit A staff is very happy with the way things have gone this past year and are looking for- ward to next year. As one counselor in Unit A exclaimed, . . .this Unit A class of juniors is an excel- lent, spirited, class! Secretaries: Mrs. Mary Shaw, Mrs. Griffith M . m - Mr. Edward D. Unit C principaL Mr. Faranacci, and the counselors, Mr. Smith, Ms. Dodds, and Miss Lance, helped this years sophmores adjust quickly to the hectic life at Heights by creating a Unit C paper to help keep them abreast of class news. However, learning a foreign language remained popular at Heights. Heights High students studied French, German, Hebrew, Latin, Spanish, and Russian. In the past few years, language teachers stressed vocabulary more than grammar. They used Visual aids, such as newspapers, menus, and filmstrips in order to present the language in its everyday usage. The foreign language students did not just learn a new language, but also gained an aware- ness of the people and places associated with the language. Many of the foreign language students seldom used their new language out of the classroom. The experience was still beneficial, though, because it gave the student a chance to create an entirely new system of thinking. Who is it? What it is is an attempt to incorporate into the school those students who, for one re- ason or another, have not been able to learn in the tradi- tional curriculum; most often because of attendance prob- lems. The staff of C01 111 consists of five teachers: Ms. Kern e psychology, Mr. Tarter - English, Mr. Dubovec - math, Mrs. Hellstern - science, Mrs. Gardner - social studies, and the coordinator, Mr. Frank Hooks. Because there are so few of them, the teachers found that they were able to have better relationships with their students, as well as good communication between themselves. Accord- ing to Mr. Hooks, C01 111 is a forward-looking program; it is an effort to move the students from isolation into the mainstream of life at Heights. Who is Col 111? C01 111 is people, about 122 of them, who were given a second chance in C01 111 this year. C01 111 creates a small, dose community in which the teachers and students are able to work together towards a common goal; that of helping the students get the credits necessary for graduation, as well as providing them with an opportunity to learn. This was the first year of C01 111; a year of trial and error, of success and failure. Through the efforts of the teachers and students, much good was done. Attendance of almost all the students improved, and - for probably the first time - these students participated in, and benefitted from, Heights High School. It includes two programs; a Learning Center and an Adjusted Curriculum class. The Learning Center is to help those students with learning dis- abilities. This program has nothing to do with intelligence, in fact there are many extremely bright students in this program who, for one reason or another, find it difficult to learn in the traditional classroom. The Adjusted Curriculum class is for those students who have below average learning po- tential. The special classes are for re- mediation, and are not full time. The students take regular classes in which their progress is watched carefully. Between the faculty and the students there is much person-contact, as there are only five students to each class. Coach Dick Mann felt that his runners were hurt by the fact that there is no cross-country program in our junior highs, so virtu- ally all prospects are inexperienced. But Coach Mann felt this year was a building year, and next year could be the best in six years. Spirit was high with our runners, who were led by seniors Tim O'Neill and Curtis Leary, and talented junior John Rynes, who finished 28th, 20th, and 11th respectively in the N.L.E.L. Mr. Cappalletti gave the team quite a boost by his requirement that all basketball hopefuls participate in cross-country, and a few talented runners were discovered in this way. Next year's team should be led by Rynes, Johnson, and Banks, and with the same spirit, 10 miles a day of practice, and Coach Mann's relentless driving, the harriers should return to their customary excellence. 114 The spirited '76 Volleyball team proved to be one of the best in Heights history. Led by senior Ruth Seidorf, the team rolled to an excellent 8-4 record. Junior Cindy Ledinsky played well, as did sophomores Laura Spurney, Julie Petot, and Jeanne Barkey, all playing on the varsity team. The team was marked by temendous moti- vation and could frequently be seen prac- ticing at 7:00 a.m. and after school. Com- bining teamwork, morale, and a few early morning practices, the junior varsity team finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record. Standout sophomore Mindy Klein led the team in first singles, and in Coach Helen Fox's opinion can become one of the area's top tennis players. Mindy was fol- lowed by Cindy Rubin in second singles, and Linda Myers in third singles. The team's record in the new fall L.E.L. league was 3-7, and might have been better had the team had more depth. As a result of increased student interest, administra- tive cooperation and an energetic executive board, this year's Student Council came alive again with highly efficient organization. Led by President Kevin Fahey and a dynamic group of officers, under the guidance of Dr. Rosalind Rehor, the council's goal was to make Heights a more interesting place for students by giv- ing them a voice in what happens at the school. The group was able to provide a multitude of cultural, edu- cational and social activities. This year's projects in- cluded an exciting Homecoming celebration and dance, a United Torch Drive which doubled the previ- ous year's collection, cooperative work with the Heights Community Congress, and an expanded In- tersession. Together, the council has produced a very successful haunted house, Senior Dinner, and Prom. Unit B principal Mr. Wisely feels that class council is a good training ground for future leadership. He has been aware of students' previous lack of skill in parliamentary procedures and is concerned that students should get their rights.
