Nearly the whole team saw action in this game with O'NeiIl, Cellin, Perry, and Hauk doing the scoring. Playing their first home game at Shaw Sta- dium, Heights with joe Cellin leading the way, finally got rolling after a stormy first half and downed Ash- tabula 26-6. An unfortunate accident occurred in this game when Scotty York, last year's All-Lake Erie League for- ward, suffered a broken leg. Despite the loss of their high point man, the quintet. consisting of lettermen Moe Savransky. Dick Kretch, Milt Bialosky, joe Hauk, and Herb Schneider, rolled on to nine consecu- tive victories before losing their first Lake Erie League game to Shaw on the Shaw court. The team would have maintained its league lead, but the ineligibility of a Lake- wood player caused the forfeit of the Ran- ger victories and a Heights defeat later at the hands of the Lakewood five placed Shaw in the lead However a smashing victory over the East Clevelanders by a score of 64 39 gave us the co championship of the Lake Erie League M Bialosky B Mann Mr Vannorsdall 52 I. A dazzling spectacle at night games was the new method by which the band marched in the dark with flares in their caps. At the annual military ball in November many couples spent a most enjoyable eve- ning of dancing and good fellowship with band members of other schools. On March twenty-first was held the city' wide band, solo and ensemble contest in which Heights band members won many high honors. A week later, on March twene tyeeighth, the spring concert was pref sented. Band members work diligently to main- tain the high rating of their organization, Mr. Cerkowski, of course, must know all the music of all the instruments even bet' ter than the students who play them, and thus his work is Quite difficult also. l-'LUTES Bonnie Lake Barbara Budde Harry Ritchie Savine Gross Carol Colbert Robert Zaas Barbara Lorz Grace Dery Robert Koslen Arthur Levine Gall Eaton Ann Findley Rosemary Catalano Jim Faile PICCOLOS Dick Bailey Bonnie Lake Barbara Budde Harry Ritchie OBOES ldele Mendvlson Phyllis Shapiro Bb CLARINETS Allen Benjamin Bessie Rossznan Alan Podis Charles Perehnan John D'Alessantlro Kenneth Gerson Herbert Rice Phyllis Mills Marvin Metscltis Edwin Singer Richard Hruby David DeForest Michael Shore Herbert Weintraub HEIGHTS BAND Geraldine Jacobs Larry Cohen Ray Herman Carol Zulauf Leonard Biarsky Vera Caldwell Virginia Jennings Bob Dragin Jean Halbere Donald Colflesh Sandy Pessell Ralph Newman Myron Baker STRING BASSI-ZS Don Ne-ben John Wigham CORNETS Charles Olnnan Jack Minor Peter Hofinan Neil Fisher Lee Betts Raymond Brudno David Earnest David Rossin James Hilton Bruce Johnson Edward Desatnik 'l'RL'MPETS James Goldrich Alfred Hofstatter Kurt Miller Jack Cronquist Jack Schultz Alan Krichman Patil Radice llenry Crowell Dick Phillips ALTO SAXUPIIONES Bill Magid Clayton Zeidler Roland Nevins James Fintz Mike D'Alessandro Myron Viny TENOR SAXOPIIONI-I Jinnny Yasinow Bruce Baker BARITONE SAXOPHONIC Bill Stark TROMBONES Daniel Sable Glenn Anderson Arthur Stashower Arthur Barnes Al Schiff Jack Dugguan Louise Merlin Harold Dexter Ray Leuenberger BARITONES Mike Captain Karl Bechberger Milfred Silverberp Allen Wollinsky FRENCH HORNS Helene Sykes Ruth Steinhilber Bob Cronquist Chris Sheeler Don Shanks Bill Higgins Lloytl I-'intlerlnit Eh Tl'B.-XS Bill ll'ai.1ner John Klein Bob Twige ALTO l'l,ARlNE'l'S Marvin Gevelber Ted Eickhofl' BASS CLARINI-IHS Dick Clark Marvin Jatlee BASSOONS Eidth Silver Donna Gressel Rhlih Tl'BAS Ted Rautenberg Raymond Treicliel Abba Terr TIMPANI Robert Mook XLYOPHONE Joan MacKinnon NIARIMBA Dorothy Klein PERCUSSION Mickey Desbere Robert Katz Donald Bordon Harvey Winoerad Fiinif wifi' J Rubinstein Polizzi, Baker, Egbert, Berg, Hartman, Horton, Rinvlla, Taxbernier Nrwuiil i'fiii': Rfgcrs Porter, lxex, Andrews, Price, lkerman Peteriohn Hagberg. llenaud, Barber, Hamlin Tfllffl ffiffl' Ciibsoo. FRIENDSHIP CLUB Since the Senior girls this year have been greatly concerned about their plans for the years following graduation, their meetings. centered around the theme, We Face the Future, were planned to help them make these decisions, The group was very tortue nate in having two excellent speakers, Mrs. lay Seth Hurd, who spoke about positions in which no further training is needed, and Mrs. Harold Bannister, who spoke about the opportunities in the field of college-trained positions. With the idea that their relations to oth- ers play a very important part in their per- sonal happiness and well-being, the junior Chapter chose the theme, Getting Along in Our World, A student-teacher panel and a mother and daughter discussion were two ot the ways in which the theme was developed. l I 'Nf I'0ll'-' Shapero, Weiss, Rayden, Schattenfield, Wallser Sfwiirrl rozr: Levey Weisman. There are representatives from many branches of service, some of whom are at- tending school under the G.l. Bill of Rights. Most of the boys, however, prefer to save the money to which they are entitled under the G. I. Bill for college and arrange their schedules so that they can work part time. There have been as many as fifty-three ex-service men to graduate in one class. As a rule a satisfactory schedule can be ar- ranged and there have been very few boys who have dropped out. This club is divided into committees on chemistry, physics, psy- chology, medicine, and nature study plus additional groups whenever there is a demand for them. At each gath- ering of the club one of the groups presented a demonstration on a partic- ular subject in their field of study, or sometimes a student from Case spoke on a scientific topic. An outstanding event was a visit in january to the Coast Guards ice- breaking vessel in order to view its ra- dar apparatus. ln February the Young Scientists visited the General Electric Lighting Exposition at Nela Park in honor of the lOOth anniversary of the birth of Thomas Edison. Nature study hunts, picnics, and parties were held in the spring before this progressive club ended another successful year. l3l awww man, Flaxman, Freedman Standiiig.' Miss Steiner Singer, Weibel, Lerner. LIBRARY CLUB HEN you take a magazine from the library, look at its cover, it is re- inforced, but who did it? Yes, you've guessed it-among its other duties the Library Club has accomplished this great feat. too. Under the able spon- sorship of Miss Steiner, this group gives much service to the library. Odd job men are what the members of this organization are, Included in their du- ties are cutting and pasting items. running errands, and filing. Voyagers-yes they are that, tool Colorful Mexico was visited by means of book reviews and a movie about the country, Dr, Evans took them to Ha- waii when she spoke about the trip she took to those interesting islands. Also on their tour list was the Art lvlu- seum Library, the National Bindery. and the Cleveland Public Library. l32 berg, laffe Sterns. Svcmid z'vu': Emerling Lustig, Wetzel, Getrue Hershowitz. VISUAL ED. TUDENTS amble into the Little Theatre, sit down, and see films, slides, or movies. Who shows these pictures or projects the slides? Why. of course it's the boys of the Visual Education Club. Every member of this group must have had experience in handling projectors. Mr. Christman. popular and effi- cient sponsor of this organization, or- ders the films and then it's up to The fellows. A job well-done is their re- ward for their untiring efforts. Interested? Come to ZOI any Thursday and join the German Club, which is under the faculty sponsorship of Miss Georgia Parry, By means ot reports and pic- tures this group travels to different parts in Germany. To study the culture and historical background of the German language and people is the aim of this group. Many topics are discussed and re- ported on during their weekly meet- ings. A very interesting panel was held on the Contrast Between American and German Forms and Aims of Educa- tion. Present conditions in Germany and the progress of de-nazification were the subjects of two thought-pro- voking discussions. Did you know that many great Ger- mans have contributed much to Amer- ican science, music. and literature? This club studies these men, and also gives reoorts on recent German au- thors and their books. Sing-play games-yes, they do these things, too. in German. 134 Frvrnf rl'll'.' DISASTER CORPS H ANNA play cards? asks a soldier of his buddy. This question is be- ing repeated time and time again all over the United States because of the Disaster Corps. for among their other Red Cross projects they sponsored a Card Campaign. Busy as a bee, can well describe each member ot this outstanding or- ganization, 40 points was the goal of every girl and each one reached it by making scrapbooks, menus, booklets, joke books, book marks, and crossword puzzles. The Disaster Corps works in co-op- eration with the American junior Red Cross, and under the able leadership of Mr. George Barbour they have truly earned the title of a service organiza- tion. l-leights is not the only one to ac- claim their good work, for when Pathe macle a newsreel in November, this group was chosen to help represent the junior Disaster Corps of America. PAN AMERICAN HE purpose of the Pan American Club is to disseminate to the inter- ested students a more thorough knowledge of the Pan American na- tions. This has been accomplished by means of moving pictures, slides, and discussions pertaining to these na- tions. Now that even the most distant points on the earth's surface can be reached in a matter of a few hours, this knowledge is even more useful, especially to those who expect to make a tour of these countries. As a related activity, the club, un- der the able sponsorship of Miss Man- ning, sent a scrapbook, containing ar- ticles telling of its activities and our school, to a school in Puerto Rico. The members also wrote and published their newspaper. La Voz, meaning The Voice. ln view of the fact that they met only twice a month, it is truly remarkable that they accom- plished so much. RADIO CLUB NY ninth period, if you go down to a little room near Metal Shop, you will see a group of hams with head- phones clamped tightly to their ears, trying to puzzle out some dots and dashes. Mr. Randall sends to the more experienced hams, and Marv Coldfarb, the president, sends to the half-hams. At present they are looking for a room to set up their own station and go on the air. Mr. Morley has sug- gested that a quonset hut be put on the roof if they can't find one. The ultimate goal of every ham is to obtain a license, but this is easier said than done, as the tests are really tough. lf you don't believe me, just ask any member.
