THE CALDRGN January Class Hlstory E the January Graduating Class of 1928 started our school career ln the Superior Road School the little stone building that lS now the Red Cross Nursing Center In those days we were anxious to get to school on time and even before time because the first one there was allowed to ring the bell and we loved to hear the thing ring too Alas' we have changed since then We have lived and learned' Now we don t hurry to get to school early It just 1sn t being done this season and do we hate to hear that bell rlng? We spent our first two years learning how to read write and sit with our hands folded in our laps Next we advanced to Junior High and here we divided part of us gomg to Roxboro and part to Roosevelt This was where the drastic change occurred in the boys They began to drop the anchor as they called it We merely remarked that they had put on long trousers They felt bigger and better than ever before and leained how to make boot stools and book racks in manual training vshile the girls made aprons and dresses Csuch as they werej in sewing Then old Lee Road School had been condemned for years and was all propped up 1n hopes that it wouldn t fall down on our heads We had known a hand in choosing the new name and the colors for the school Roosevelt Junior High School was the one chosen and blue and white were the colors In Roxboro at the same time the other half of We Thumb weddings and printing an unusual annual in that it came out four times a year instead of once Soon after we left Roosevelt and Roxboro for the old Heights High building At Heights they put us upon the shelf and made us sing Old MacDonald Had a Farm E I E I O As soon as vse got to Heights they decided to have exemptions from exams I suppose lf was because they saw our shining trusting faces and hated to take the Joy out of our young lives We had been at Heights about a year and a half vxhen the new building was declared nnished and ready for use We packed up bag and baggage and off we went with high hopes and expectations but lo and behold when we arrived we found the place to be a labyrinth of halls stairs and queer rooms It took us quite a time to find our way about We the All s admit that we were among those who took advan tage of the excuse of not being able to find the room By arrixing ten minutes late we missed having to answer that awful lirst question or ex plaining that terrible first problem The history of the biggest mid year class Heights has ever known is finished Here s hoping if necessary you ll be able to pass an exam on the history of the January Graduating Class vuth an EJH Jean Shzzk Iucnty N ' N , Y Y Y Y ! 1 Y 7 - . . .
