SPORTS REVIEW Althoughthe 1957 Clermont Highlanders faced the difficult job of replacing seven senior starting players, among them, all con- ference Ned Henderson and Speedy Wolfe, they started the season with a Bang by defe ating Web ste r 27-0 and coming from behind to defeat Umatilla 13-6 on a long pass from Jim McGuire, Quarterback, to Kenny Boykin, fullback, in the closing seconds of the game. The combination ofa strong Mount Dora team and an attack of the flu, caused the Highlanders to stumble in their third game and go to defeat in the hands of Mount Dora 21-6. The next two weekends were dark as far as the Highlanders were concerned, because they were upset by St. Cloud 20-7, and Tavares on the following weekend 20-13. The highlight of the St. Cloud game was a long r unb a ck kickoff by Kenny Boykin, which was marked by e xc elle nt blocking by the line. One outstanding play in the T avare s game was made by Jim McGuire, when he caught a Tavares fumble and went on to score. The Highlanders played their best game of the season against the Groveland Greenbacks in spite of the fact that they were not winners by points. The Highlanders got within the five yard line twice but both times the G re e nb ack s and the clock were able to keep them from scoring. In the Homecoming game, the Clermont team was defeated by a strong Eustis eleven, 19-6. In thefinal game of the season, the Highlanders were nippe d by Lake Weir, in the last minutes of the game with a score of 13-6. We completed the s e a s on by winning four games and losing six. Clermont placed Captain Kenny Boykin on the All Conference team and Bruce Mac donald as Honorable Mention. Our eight Seniors will certainly be mi s se d during the 1958 season but we are looking forward to next year and hoping to have a winning combination. L Iklkllvllilvkllvklllllt The starting lineup for the Highlanders Boy's Basketball Team has been Jack Murphy and Dean Miller as Forwards, Jim Mc Guire and Butch Carden as Guards, and Bill Osgood or Robbie Sheldon as Center. Although the team is young and hasn't won any games this season, the team is improving by experience. Coach Al Lagano has done a tremendous amount of work with the boys this year, and it looks as if he may get some results next year. The girls Team came through the season with a 2-4 record ltwo wins and four lossesj. Both victories were over their rivals, the Groveland Greenbacks. Alicia Oliver was the high pointer for the Lassies, with 76 points, and Captain Kaye Halstead was second with 58 points. Other outstanding playe r s for the Lassies were Linda Halstead QFD, Shelby Vaughn CGLLFD, Ann Beverly KGB, Ruth Rorabough IGI, Jean Johnson CGD, and Judy Swearingin KGI. Sally Maynard the coach, was voted the best coach in the conference by the team.
