KNOWLES Dedication appreclatwn of h1s pauence and understandmg m the classroom and on the athleuc f1e1d the Beta Club dedicates the 1956 Highlander Mr Norman Iuhch To the Graduating Seniors I sincerely hope that this graduating class will believe that every right implies a responsibility, every opportunity, an ob- ligation: every possession, a duty. Never mind the dark or shadowed hours. Forget the unpleasant, unhappy days. Remember only the days of rich experienceg let the others drop into oblivion. Jack Pilsbury To the 1956 Seniors The world holds many treasures if you workhard to achieve them. Thereis a defi- nite challenge awaiting you as you try to break tne barrier of success. Be honest. steadfast, and God-fearing in all of your endeavors. Face your problems like a citi- zen who is proud of his American heritage. Starting from where you might have been or where you'd like to be are impos- sibilities that should not even be contem- plated. Start now and from here. Other- wise you'll never get under way. Fifth Sixth Seventh MARY Lou RORABAUGH LYNN BRAN-1-Ly ANNA MARY PRIEBE History Among the twenty-nine graduating Seniors there remain only nine of the scared little young'ins that first appeared here in the fall of 1944. The first moming Sandra Anderson, Lettie Beals, Marquerite Boyd, Pat Dees, Eleen Kimball, Tanya Hutsell. Jimmy Carroll, Lynn Crews, and Gilbert Pierce had the unforgettable experience of meeting Mrs. Ware. Our first year passed quite serenely with only twelve teachers. Our second year started with a bang with the welcome addition of Lynn Brantly, Ruth Cummings, Anna Mary Priebe, and Bob McCown. This year we had only two teachers. Our third year was a succession of bubble gum, marbles, tops, jacks, and-- more teachers. This year Gloria Hough and Bill Aslunore joined our ranks, Fourth and fifth grades went along quite quietly except for the additions of Roger Godwin and Jean Harden. Remember the weekly spelling bees with Anna Mary always Champion, the daily penmanship lessons, the morning specials, and Friday afternoon radio programs? These were what Royce Wells and Hazel Smith found when they joined us in the sixth grade. Oh! at last we made it--Junior High--weren't we the wheels though. James Graves arrived our eighth year to add greatly to the general confusion. With the beginning of our Freshman year, we first began to realize that we might get out someday. This year Nancy Smith, Julia Faye Rogers, Golan Helmuth, and Leonard Pennington enlarged our ranks. We were thrilled to have two of our number in the Cheering team, and several basketball players. As Sophomores we set a record for magazine sales that still stands. Shirley Simmons, Margaret Mitchell, Julia Welsh, and Tanya Hutsell, who returned from several years in Nebraska, contributed much to this success. Our Junior year was taken up with presenting the smash hit-- Cheaper By The Dozen, planning a prom of Moonlight and Roses, getting our beautiful class rings, and doing as little work as possible. At last we are Seniors--It has been a long road producing the Senior Play, Old Doc that was a roaring success, ordering calling cards, announcements, and caps and gowns. These all drive home the fact that it won't be long now. Mary Lou Rorabaugh and Albert Haines arrived this year to swell the class of '56 to twenty-nine. We are proud of our class and as we scatter after graduation, we shall have many memories, good and bad, to take with us and use in the years to come. Class Will LYNN CREWS wills Gordon Lewia his surefire way for cutting off pounds. JULIA WELSH leaves Daye Turville and Gwen Page her one way ticket to Grove- land. Have fun girls! JAMES GRAVES wills Jack Patterson his ability to light a Little Joe in a windy car. RUTH CUMMINGS wills Carolyn Oswalt a big smile, dimples and ability to get along with others. GILBERT PIERCE leaves Charley Seaver and Duane Pontius a book on Charles Atlas method for building muscles. ELEEN KIMBALL leaves her title of the tallest girl in the Senior Class to Marilyn Nagel and Dianne McLean. BILL ASHMORE leaves Jack Judy and George Bishop his skill in fouling out of basketball games. GLORIA HOUGH and ANNA MARY PRIEBE leave Phyllis Weideman and Loretta Fish their ability to pick oranges during classes without being caught. GOLAN HELMUTH wills Dan White his bench behind the locker rooms. JULIA ROGERS leaves Pat Smith her ability to act smart but remain stupid. ROGER GODWIN and SANDRA ANDERSON leave their old parking places to Mike Schoenholz and Maxine Swearingen. LYNN BRANTLY leaves her ability to clean up after the angelic little ones to Sue Allen and Joan English. ROYCE WELLS leaves his ability on the football field to Dan Sheldon. MARY LOU RORABAUGH leaves Ned Henderson and Bill Rorabaugh her front- row seat in English class. BOB McCOWN bequeaths Speedy Wolfe his ability to avoid accidents. MARGUERITE BOYD and NANCY SMITH will their ability to get along with Mrs. Schlott to David Black and Helen Harper. PAT DEES and JEAN HARDEN leave John Toole and Don Vauglm their quiet manner. Use it well, boys! LETTIE BEALS and SHIRLEY SIMMONS leave their wedding plan book to Jean Creech. JIM CARROLL wills his book on How To Relax to Earl Purvis. HAZEL SMITH and MARGRET MITCHELL leave to Douglas Kelly the ability to avoid trouble. LEONARD PENNINGTON and AL HAINES leave to Ruby Harris the map of Minneola. TANYA HUTSELL leaves Carolyn Arey her black book of boys' addresses. Class Prophecy As we glance into the future we see Sandra Anderson washing dirty diapers and her faithful husband, Guess Who is diligently hanging the clean garments on the line. Following his studies of engineering for 8 years, Bill Ashmore is now building marvelous canals for the Army with that great new invention The Spade! Lettie Beals started her football career in the Powder Puff football game. From that time on she has been the star fullback for the Chicago Bears. In her last game she injured the Baltimore Colt star player, Ruth Cummings. Marguerite Boyd, after years of hard work and lots of determination has recently succeeded in being the first woman president of the U. S. Congratulations! Having seen Lynn Brantly's performance in the Senior play, the talent scouts chose her to portray the slinky lover of Rock Hudson in his latest movie Love Will Win. Following many years of hard labor in Reddick's Super Market, we find Lynn Crews and Bob McCown, co-owners in the new ultra- modern drive-in grocery store in Clermont, and as their manager, they have none other than Jimmy Carroll, who has also gained his experience at Reddicks. We find Spot Graves has set up one of the biggest dancing schools in the state. The band leader and piano player for Mr. Graves, is the old maestro himself, Royce Wells. Entering the dance school to take a look me find Jean Harden, Margret Mitchell, Hazel Smith and Pat Dees, who are prize students in ballet. Julia Welsh and Tanya Hutsell are currently co-starring at the Met fopera.j Anna Mary Priebe and Gloria Hough are found at Silver Springs as aquatic mer- maids, springing from their great love for the out-of-doors. Eleen Kimball, after a long difficult struggle, now has her own restaurant. Shirley Simmons, after receiving her experience at the Grant-Harris Drug Store is Eleen's head waitress. We find Julia Rogers, Mary Lou Rorabaugh and Nancy Smith in the operating room helping the doctors as they make a study of their victim. Gilbert Pierce owns and operates his own used car lot, while Golan Helmuth designs hot rods for the younger generations. Al Haines has controlling interest in a radio station and is now managing it quite well. Leonard Pennington is now a four-star General in the National Guard and is Defense Advisor to our President. Our crystal ball is now growing dim and we watch the scene fade away into the distance. Song As Freshmen we came, As Seniors we go, What we' ve done in between Our report cards don't show. We've studied and worked Yet we've all had our fun, The hours have grown shorter Our school days are done. Toward the future yet to be We'l1 all face with our fears And when we've grown old We'll remember these happy years. Tanya Hutsell Poem If golden memories were really worth gold And friends could be counted twice, Each Senior would have wealth untold And happiness all his life. If time's big hand could be tumed back, And our memories could live again, We should not count the things we lack Or the times we did not win. Now our memories have grown fond Of teachers and our friends, Now we all look back and say Oh for those sweet days again. Old Docs' Senior Play Cheaper by the Dozen, Junior Play Prom, and Banquet Moonlight and Roses came to Clermont on the night of the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The evening began with a wonderful chicken dimler served by eight dutiful Sophomores. The moon rose higher in the sky as we journeyed on to a lovely rose garden complete with a wishing well and soft, sweet music for dancing. Soon it was time for the announcement of the King and Queen of the Prom. The lucky couple were led to their thrones and Anna Mary Priebe and James Pitt were officially crowned. In the wee hours of the morning we had one last bit of nourishment and then home to dream of our Lovely Moonlight and Roses Prom.
