These people took part in the Home Elimination Contest,wh1ch was held on January 25 with Chester L Boyes of laukon acting as critic Judge. On February 16, the Preliminary Contest was held at :est Union. Th students listed above presented heir selections at the various centersg and seven of this group received Division I or Superior ratings, some of these people winning in more than one division of speech Those who were certified to advance to the next contest were: Cathryn Crowe Humorousg Helen Henderson 0r1g'nal Oratory, Arlene Knudsen Oratory and Radio Speaking, Barbara Thies Ora ory and Radio Speakingg Jo Ann Moore Interpretive Reading and Radio Speaking, Charles wagner Interpretive Reading and Dramatic, Aaron Knudsen Humorous A one act play, The 3torm', was also prepared for this contest Its cast included La Verne Swenson, Doro hy Helgerson, John Nelson, Patsy Gass and Helen Henderson. The play received a rating of Fxcellent or Division I at the Preliminary Contest The organization of the state series of speech contests was somewhat different this year fror that of forrer years. The Preliminary Contest was conbined with the Pre District Contest, and there were two State Speech Contests, Of the above listed speakers, four received Division I ratings in seven entries at the District Speech Contest held at Dubuque on March l They were: Cathryn Crowe, Arlene Knudsen, Jo Ann Moore and Barbara Thies. These people proceeded to the State Finals he d at Grinnel on March 30 Four Division I ratings were received from the seven entries. They were: Humorous--CathryghCrowe reading 'Arsenic and Old Lace'g Oratory--Arlene Knud- sen presenting e People's Const1tut1on',and Barbara Thies reading 'An Echo Here and There'gand Interpretive Reading--Jo Ann Moore who prepared a cutting from 'John Brown's Body' for the final contest, The activities of the Speech Departnent were not confined to contests, however.Several students presented their readings at various local functions.
