LARGE GROUP AL, lvl' S during 1956 l95'7 'me Year's large group musical activities culminated in a trip to the Large Group Musical Contest, which was held at Postville on Friday, May 3 All four of our entries Band, Mixed Chorus, Boys' Chorus, Girls' Glee Club received Division One ratings. Each of the groups prepared two selections for the co1 test. The Band present ed selections from Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess , and 'Med1tat1on'from '1ha1e e Mixed Chorus' numbers were an old English song Merry Are the Bells , and I Be- eve 'Ihe Boys' Chorus sang a Russian Folk Song entitled 'Dance M Canrades , and 'Like a Mighty Eagle . Selections of the Girls' Glee Club were Forest Hymn and Ra1n . The Choruses and the Band appeared at several different functions during the school year. 'Ihe Band played at the Junior Class Play, and the Mixed Chorus fur- nished music for the Christmas Vespers Service. The Band and Girls' Glee Club par- ticlpated in the 5th Annual Fayette County Music Festival. Both groups performed for the visiting critics: Professor Myron Russell of Iowa State Teachers' College, who heard the Bandg and Professor Harold Stark of State University of Iowa, who heard the visiting vocal groups. Fifteen Band members tried out for the Select Band, and eleven of these were chosen. They were Cathryn Crowe, Jo Ann Moore, Charles Wagner, Barbara Anderson, Arlene Knudsen, Gerene Larson, Judy Nims, Beverly Oleberg, Helen Jo Burgett, Duane Gutcher and Patsy Gass. All Band members played in the Massed Bandg and eight vocalis s -- Jo Ann Moore, Arlene Knudsen Cathryn Crowe, Becky Olson Gary Gilson, Charles Wagner, Laverne Swenson, and Rolly Hackmann -- sang in the County Chorus, directed by Professor Stark. 'Ihe llassed and Select Bands were directed by Professor Russell and Kr. Paul Wright.
