our revels now are ended, these our actors, as i foretold you, were all spirits, and are melted into air, into thin air, and, like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud-capped towers, the gor- geous palaces, the solemn temples, the great globe itself, yea, all ivhich it inherit, shall dis- solve, and like this instdistantial pageant faded, leave not a rack behind, we are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep . . . this is a ghost story . . . here are the shades of people and places you knew . . . the moments recorded in this book, the faces you see pictured, the buildings, the trees, the very skies- all are gone forever, they exist now only in memory, in dreams, and in these pictures. these are the times that were, but are no more. for everything changes, the present moment is gone before you can say, it is ended. time changes the faces — and one by one, they are erased . . . except in memory, the wind, the air, the cycle of the seasons — all these change the places — until at last, grain by grain, cell by cell, they too are erased. look now at the places you knew, walk for a while in this land of shadows and live again in the year that is past. look at familiar things with new eyes — with the eyes of love, treasure them — for even as you look, they are changing and fading away.

listen now to the faint ring of laughter, borne on the winds of memory . . . the campus jokes — remember dubbing rpa fun and games in the woods ? rats with shaved heads — and beanies, slavish errands, cheers forced from rasped throats . . . who will remember last year ' s jokes? and who will remember rat season, when we forget, now that it is made voluntary and is drifting away — dying? echoes in an empty hallway . . .
