THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Arts and Sciences Industrial Physics Pre-Medicine Today, more than ever, the need is for men who are well-versed in science, world history, sociology and other fields. Along with training the students in these fields, the purpose of the School of Arts and Sciences is to give students a broad general education and to prepare them to be intelligent citizens. To acquire this well-rounded education, the students take English, math, physics, sociology, government, history, economics, and a foreign language. After two years of these basic courses, the student is ready to settle down in one of these courses and continue in this one field. With such professors as Doc Green and John Lane in the English Department, Wally Trevillian in the Economics Department, Pych Waite and Frank Burtner in the Sociology Department, Doctor Huff in the Physics Department, and Lander in the History Department, the Arts and Sciences major, no matter what his particular bent, finds that upon graduation, he is well rounded and proficient in his chosen field. Arts and Science professors work long and hard, as do the students. front row: COX, SHELDON, EPTING, BOLEN, KINARD, HUFF, OWINGS, LaGRONE. second row: LINDSEY, J. C GREEN, SHACKELFORD, C. A. THE SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY Agricultural Chemistry Chemistry The ever-growing School of Chemistry, now at home in the new build- ing is becoming a larger and more important school as the years go by. The chemistry freshman encounters few courses that differ from those taken by other majors. His chemistry 103 and 104 may be a little more detailed, but the English and math are the same as for other majors. As the chemistry major exchanges the one for a deuce on his collar, the student also has to face Qual and Quan analysis in addition to English lit and calculus. This, however, is still not too bad. With the junior year comes the fun. Doc Rhyne ' s German in addition to physical chemistry make the junior chemist wonder if he is in the right course after all. But when the senior year finally rolls around, and with his tie out and gold braid, the chemist begins to see the break of day. If he can just get past another year with Doc Schirmer and Peter Carodemos, he can well be proud of the sheepskin that has taken so long to acquire. In the labs, the Chemistry major performs not only routine analyses, but also tests such things as commercial fertilizers and related products. front row: WEBB, BROWNLEY, POLK, SCHIRMER, HOBSON, HUNTER, second row: STEELE, DINWIDDIE, SALLEV, HODGES, JACOBS, top row: CARODEMOS, SMITH, FERNANDEZ, MITCHELL, GILLESPIE. 30
