Senior Class History Now when the skilled workmen had completed their labors with me. I was placed high in the tower of Clemson where all might see, and where I might see all, and where people could reckon by my signals their going out and their coming in. And many happy years did I pass thus, gazing down upon the growing beauties around me and listening ever to the thrilling shouts of youth. But in the summer of the year 1925 all the land was stricken with a terrible fever, for the gods of rain forgot the earth, and that which was fresh and green was now burned to the grey of ashes: and I, who must continually look unto the unmerciful sun as I wave my hands before my four faces, became also stricken with fever and bethought myself that during the eight months I must surely perish. But on the first day of the ninth month, each of my four faces saw the coming of a hundred youths, so fresh, so green, so timid, so determined, that the fever left me, and since then I have had a goodly health. Coming over the mountains of the West from the seashore of the East, the sands of the South, and the green hills of the North, these men gathered in the halls about me and they were called Freshmen. The prophets had not intended that their life should be easy, and it was not, for they were ill-received by those already members of the Clemson Clan. So they chose one from among them called Pearman to guide them through their troubles. For nine months these fresh youths labored to learn the secrets of the Clan and to become a goodly part thereof: and exceedingly happy they were when they at last were called brothers of the Clan, and I was happy with them for their exceeding freshness had brought youth to mine old springs and gears, and mine interest in them was great. Now in the ninth month of the twenty-sixth year of the century these men again assembled in the halls, but now they were called Sophomores, and had from their ranks a small but powerful leader whose name is called Mc- Millan. Even so, there were many secrets of the teachings of the Clan which these men knew not yet, and their estate was not far removed from that of the Freshman. So they murmured among themselves as to what they should do, but they did naught other than was befitting their station — continuing to laugh aloud throughout the year. When he named O ' Quinn was chosen to lead these men, they were called as Juniors, and they were well into the heart of all that keeps the Clan so great. They knew well the secrets of drill and battle, the courtesy of the dance, the sportsmanship of the athlete, and the meanings of the weird words and symbols of the aged teachers of the Clan. During the months of the year they grew great in heart and mind and body. And at the end of the months of teaching they did gather their clothing and journey afar over the hills into the land of Page One Hundred Twenty- two the sinking sun to be held as captives in a great camp, where for six long weeks they did drill and march, and wrap their legs with cloths, and serve in the kitchens, as they trained for the becoming of great warriors. I was sore of loneliness with my friends held as captives so far from me, and often in the still quiet of the summer nights did I hear their cries of despair, even from the distant land of Ala. But as strong men and as Seniors did these men return to Clemson ' s halls. Their knowledge is so great that they talk to the learned teachers in earnest tones of mystic symbols and taunting tongue. A wise man whom they call Clyburn dost lead them now, while he called Pressley is chief among the war- riors under the guardian Tiger. Still in their light movement and their joyous cries arc the power and beauty of youth, but ' tis hard that I should see their faces lengthen as they look back upon the distant lands from which they came to me those four years ago. My ticking is not so loud that I cannot hear their secret heart throbs as they look for the last time at one another, and as they listen to the last playing of that song that ends their day. As their faces have looked up into mine day after day, I have learned to love them even as they do one another, and to realize that in those faces have grown the same ideals to carry them through the distant lands as honest men of the Clemson Clan. Juniors m Bmm Page One Hundred Forty Junior Class History On the memorable date of August 31, 1926, about four hun- dred humble Rats ' arrived at Clemson to be manufactured into ambitious roaring Tigers. A new world loomed before many of us. A green coat surrounded our whole being, and to empha- size our high degree of verdance the Old Boys removed our crown of glory so that all within could radiate and all without could reflect. By the close of our Freshman year we had all outgrown or overcome our handicaps and short-comings to the extent that we were quite recognizable as human beings. The call came and we reassembled as wise Sophomores, roaring to do anything but work. Because of our idleness, the clean surface began to rust, and the rust began to penetrate. Before the conclusion of the second year the sophistic roaring changed to a low growl and a constant moan. We looked before and after and pined for what is not. Again the bugle sounded, and all Juniors set to work anew. As serious-minded Juniors realizing the great need for improvement, we cried, Excelsior, and began the upward climb for the bright goal of the future. The Sophomore rust began to disappear, and by the end of this year we shall begin polishing up the handle of the big front door to the hall of seniority. Our class is well represented in all college activities. Over half the football team which rose from the ranks of the common Tiger Eleven to the renowned Yellow Peril is made up of Juniors. In all other sports the class of ' 30 is equally as well-represented. In the social, religious, and academic phases of college life, men of ' 30 are towering at the top. The unique Tiger spirit has always waxed strong in our hearts, and our success ain ' t been due to any individual, nor to the college as a whole, but to the everlasting team-work of every bloomin ' soul. We will ever maintain the true Clemson spirit which never says quit. G. H. Wise, Historian. Performed by: Father Time. OBJECT: To write a history of the Sophomore Class. APPARATUS: The class of ' 31, comprising some 300 students. THEORY: That no man is perfect. Sophomores included. DATA: Army — The positions of corporals were admirably held down by the Freshmen of last year who cleaned up the Cap- tain ' s room, or shared the box from home with the 1st looey. SCHOLARSHIP: Due to a mistake on the part of the professors many Sophomores received blue slips; but still, what better proof of scholarship is needed than to stand on the big road every week- end and watch the Sophomores, those with less than two blue slips, outward bound. 1 ' Their name is legion. Athletics: As rats, the class of ' 31 boasted of three state titles to its credit: football, basketball, and baseball. This year the Sophomore class was well-represented on the football field and bas- ketball court. Here the splendid performances of these second yearlings gave victory after victory to the fighting Tigers. It is still too early to predict what they will do in baseball, but judging from past experiences we have nothing to worry about. Per Cent Error: 0.0000 (Sophomores ' calculation). 99.9999 (Juniors ' and Seniors ' calculation). Sources of Error: Due to ignorance of manipulating apparatus. CONCLUSION: We have finished the first half of our college career. Some came through; some fell by the wayside. We have seen and realized our imperfections, and we are ever striving to per- fect ourselves, for When imperfection is viewed as but a stage in the process or development, on it must fall the glory of its ultimate goal. This new world was rather vague, in a way, to those who were unaware of their latent possibilities; but there were others who were so bold as to believe that these new realms would welcome them with all the praise due a conquering hero. Summer, with all the various pastimes, ebbed slowly by, and then came that long awaited day of glorious departure. Good-byes were said, and with the assurance that the red flannels and nighties were safely tucked away. Johnnie departed for his coveted goal. Clemson. Perhaps this Tigertown wasn ' t exactly as he hoped it would be. His arrival was unheralded, his matriculation merely a routine, and his acceptance only a matter of form. After all this was over Johnnie got a hair cut. a real close one, had his very name taken away from him and was dubbed rat, ' ' or some other term which was as equally obscure. And then all the Johnnies or rats were as one, with many things in common: their heads, names, and duties. It did not require much time to adjust ourselves to the many complex situations in which we became involved. We learned the route to the P. O.. laundry, hospital, and library: we learned what the housewives usually have to contend with: and we discovered, much to our regret, how to absorb broom straw, in more or less uncomfortable positions. There was also a more cheerful side to our life. Our football team an- nexed the state flag, and our basketeers showed marked ability in ringing the hamper at the strategical moment in many of their games. Our ball tossers have not yet donned their spikes, but there is every indication that a nifty squad will be on hand when the first ball is thrown. Our rat year is about to come to a close, we shall soon pass from serfs to sophs. The mere thought that we have advanced another step furnishes us with a certain degree of consolation: but if we should pause, just for a moment in retrospect, we would have the true conception of the days gone by. enlight- ened behind us. We have had to endure hardships, of course we have. Who doesn ' t. ' ' But these hardships have increased our knowledge of many things and we have profited as a result of them; and we hope that the Class of 1932 will be a guide and inspiration to those loyal sons of dear ole Clemson who follow in our wake. The Tigers were able to gain both through the line and around the ends. Outstanding was the line play of Pressley, Magill and Swofford. Coach Josh Cody showed the vis- itors an array of invincibles. One of the most brilliant features of the day ' s match was a 35-yard sprint by Pluto ' ' Davis. He smashed and twisted his way through the entire Newberry team for a touchdown. Page Two Hundred Sixteen Clemson 6 — Davidson Clemson found Davidson a very stubborn foe. Yet in spite of the aggressiveness shown by the Wild Cats, the fighting Tiger was able to complete a beautiful pass from McMillan to Asbill. giving us a margin of six points, which our opponents were unable to overcome. In this game, as in the one with our friends from our sis- ter state, Clemson ' s victory came from the clear sky. Jus- tus intercepted a pass that might have been a touch- down for the opposing team, but, thanks to Johnnie, it re- sulted in another victory for dear old C. A. C. 3 Page Two Hundred Eighteen ■UHH Clemson 7 — N. C. State The Tigers, eager for re- venge for the defeat imposed upon them last year by the Wolfpack from the Tar Heel state, pounced upon their foe with all the pent up fury of an unleashed tiger. Due to the spectacular playing of Justus and ten other real tigers, another victory was added to the preceding ones, and our goal line remained uncrossed. Page Two Hundred Nineteen Clemson 52 — Erskine The Seceders fell before the powerful onslaught of the Tiger eleven. The brilliant offense of the Yellow Peril had not been shown in any of the previous games, but in this fray the backfield showed what could be done behind the line — the goal line. TO Page Two Hundred Twenty Clemson 32 — Carolina With the goal line still un- crossed and five games behind them, the Tiger team entered the State classic with a grim determination to keep their slate clean. The wary Tiger eleven completely bewildered the Gamecocks with their fast and cunning exhibition of football. The Gamecocks put up a brilliant fight, but, when the whistle blew, the score showed that the Yellow Peril had piled up a 32 to score against them. Justus, Covington McMillan, Hane and Padgett led the brilliant offense that caused the down- fall of the Gamecocks. Page Two Hundred Twenty-one ■$ t t y ! i  w fc£ V - ' Tf ! Clemson 7 — Miss. 26 Our first defeat. The Tiger eleven fought on a muddy field and in a downpour of rain. The powerful Tad- pole Smith seemed to wiggle his way through and around the Tiger line to pile up a large score. The final score does not show the wonderful playing which the Tigers did: eleven men of the Yellow Peril struggled throughout the game. Page Two Hundred Tiventy-two Clemson 12 — V. M. I. When they traveled to Virginia and overcame the V. M. I. cadets, the Tigers reached the peak of their football success. This was distinctly a battle of the back- fields. Both lines were in- vincible, and the Tigers real- ized early in the game that their only hope was an aerial attack. Many passes spun from the hands of McMillan, and many were knocked down, but Cadets of Vir- ginia were not fast enough to keep the Tigers from scoring two touchdowns. Page Two Hundred Twenty-three Clemson 6 — Florida 11 Under the blazing heat of the Florida sun. the Yellow Peril suffered its second de- feat. During the early stages of the game Padgett was able to snag a pass thrown by the unerring arm of McMillan ' and race across the line for our lone marker. The in- tensive heat soon began to weaken the Tigers, but it only seemed to add speed to the flashy Florida backs. Nevertheless, it was a won- derful fight, and the Florida ' Gators deserve their hard- won victory. Eleven true and loyal Tigers trotted off of Manly Field at the end of the fray victorious. This was a great game played by two great teams. The Hurricane could not fathom the subtle, crafty, shifty Tiger team and were forced to bow in defeat. McMillan, Padgett, McCar- ley, Pitts and Justus played wonderful ball behind the mighty Tiger line, which Coach Cody had perfected. Page Two Hundred Twenty-five Clemson 7 — Citadel 12 An unexpected defeat. The Citadel Bull Dogs started playing a fast game, and soon we found that they had charted a two-touchdown lead. Desperately the Tiger sought to overcome that lead, but to no avail. McMillan flipped a pass to Padgett, which gave the Tigers their lone touchdown of the game. The work of Hall. Clemson ' s mighty linesman, was sorely missed in this fray. Page Two Hundred Twenty-six Clemson . . Newberry Clemson 6 Davidson Clemson 6 Auburn Clemson 7 N. C. Although the general public never real- izes their value to a coach in moulding his team, they play one of the most important parts in the production of a finished varsity. Never in the limelight, from the beginning of the season to the end, they give their best unstintedly with- out hope of praise or reward. During the first part of the season the team lost game after game, but each time by a smaller margin. Each contest was a hard fight, and the opponents found it hard to get away from the Tiger guards. The forwards who wore the purple and gold were also thorns in the sides of all our opponents. Page Two Hundred Thirty-two At the middle of the season we had lost seven games and won only four, but then the tables turned. The Tigers began to play an offensive game and overcame nine strong opponents, losing to only three during the last half of the season. These results made the Tigers eligible for the Southern Conference meet in Atlanta. There the Tigers upheld their fighting reputation by defeating Georgia Tech, a favorite pick for Southern champions. However, they lost to North Carolina State by only three points. Swimming Team During the 1928 season a new sport was inaugurated at Clem- son. The Clemson followers of Neptune were called upon to try their skill against the powerful swimmers and graceful divers of Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia. In these contests they were badly beaten, and any other team but a Tiger team would have been sorely tempted to give up this sport. However, with undaunted courage and with success as their goal, the swimming team began training early this season. They began the season under the most adverse circumstances. The members of the team lacked experience; they suffered many reverses from the hands of their opponents last season, and they had no adequate place for practice. Despite these handicaps the swimmers have made a wonderful showing this sea- son. They are no longer considered as a weak opponent by the teams which they meet, but rather as a very strong opponent. We are looking forward to a very successful season for the swimming team next year. Three of the members arc ex-officio members, the others are elected by the active mem- bership. Professor S. M. Martin has rendered excep- tional service and has been reelected Chairman over a period of twelve years. All the members have been reelected for at least two periods of service. These men deserve much credit for their thoughtful counsel and unstinted effort to make the Clemson Young Men ' s Christian Association one of the very best in our Southland. Professors J. L. GRAHAM hJAttOLD tltLLtQ. DCTUttRE TI it Page Two Hundred Ninety-six The Y. M. C. A. Lobby The lobby of the Clcmson Y. M. C. A. is one of the pret- tiest that can be found in any of the Association buildings. It is here that students and visitors congregate, listen to the radio and the victrolas, gather about the piano and sing, have campus and student socials, play pool, checkers, read newspapers and magazines. The furniture is very comfortable, giving an inviting and friendly air. The Y. M. C. A. Reading Room The Reading Room at the Y. M. C. A. is not exactly the same as such a room would be expected to be in a library, however, we hope to add to this and by keeping more books on Religious Education, magazines on Christian World Outlook, as well as some of the best poems and literature of a lighter vein, we hope to make this a section of the Y one that will always be crowded. This year we have added some pictures and wall decorations in the nature of vases, flowers, etc. We hope to continue to add to this and get more rugs, floor and table lamps, draperies and a real first-class piano. Quite a number of magazines are furnished this room by our good friends of the campus and we are gratefully indebted to them for all of these. In the event some good friends would like to contribute some good books or pictures to the depart- ment, we assure you they will be gratefully received. Page Two Hundred Ninety-seven The Y. M. C. A. Swimming Pool The swimming pool, located in the Y. M. C. A. at Clemson College, is the mecca for many students, boys, girls, men and women. This is a beautiful tank of water, some 72,000 gallons, clear and sparkling. In the winter it is heated and in the summer it is cool and invigorating. Approximately ten thousand swims are taken in here each sum- mer and it is difficult to estimate the number of cadets who revel in this spark- ling, turbulent tank. Visitors from all over the state, visiting teams from the state and other states, are guests here from time to time. Children ' s play hours in the summer are followed by swimming hours in the pool. Some of the best swimmers of Winthrop are generous with their time and talent and assist greatly as instructors and life guards, during the summer months. Many boys take the Red Cross Life Savers tests here under the leadership of Messrs. Satterlee and Vaughan. The Clemson swimming team, captained by Walter Vincent and Coached by Mr. Holtzy, also trains here and has meets here. The Y Gym The Y Gym though small is very busy. During the fall and winter months 1 30 cadets take part in company volley- ball. Several teams were tied when flu broke up school. At the time this goes to press H company is leading in bas- ketball. Over 150 take part in company basketball. Over 125 high school children take ad- vantage of the opportunity to play here and use the showers. Page Two Hundred Ninety-eight A Brief History of the Clemson Y. M. C. A. Organized by Fletcher Brock- man in 1896. the Clemson Col- lege (Student) Young Men ' s Christian Association has ex- perienced some very trying times. Some of the members who stood loyally by the Y in those days when it was not popular to be a member, tell of hardships and trying circumstances that make one wonder how it ever weathered these storms. These circumstances seem to have been the making of some fine men. however, and it was not long before Mr. Ray Legate was elected as the first full-time secretary. Mr. Legate was suc- ceeded by Mr. Noel Prevost and Mr. Prevost in turn was succeeded by Mr. Bob Sweeney. It was during the administration of Mr. Sweeney that the present building campaign was launched and completed. Dr. W. M. Riggs and Dr. W. D. Weatherford. as well as a host of others, including Professor Hunter, Dr. Brackett, Dr. Daniel. Mr. Clinkscales, Mr. S. W. Evans. Dr. Calhoun. Pro- fessor Earle. Professor Lee, Professors Martin. Klugh. Harris and others — worked until they succeeded in getting Rockefeller to give $50,000.00 toward the building, provided the Board of Trustees and friends raise the additional $15,000.00. The building was completed in 1915 and dedicated January, 1916. Mr. Roy John was the first secretary of the Y in new quarters. Mr. John Lester of Auburn, was the first assistant secretary. Mr. Holtzy succeeded Mr. Lester as assistant secretary in 1916. Messrs. Fields. Bryant. Stoney, Mc- Clure, Fox. Robinson. Vaughan and Cooper arc other secretaries who have labored faithfully and well at Clemson. In its brief existence Clemson Y has turned out men who have gone into Y. M. C. A. work and are making good. J. E. Johnson is secretary of the Y at the University of Florida. J. M. Leland is secre- tary of the Y at The Citadel, H. E. Robinson is secretary of the Y at Tulane, Dag Folgcr was for a number of years secre- tary of the Y at Auburn and at Emory. Numerous Clemson men have gone into the Chris- tian ministry and as foreign missionaries. Where You Can Get Good Things to Eat Page Two Hundeed Ninety-nine The Secretaries of the Y The Secretaries are full-time employed executives. These men are elected by the Governing Board of the Y. M. C. A. Mr. Holtzendorff has been at Clemson for a number of years. Coming here as Assistant Secretary in 1916, Mr. Holtzy served for over a year. After a period with Uncle Sam ' s Flying Corps, he returned to Clemson in July, 19 19, and has been here since. Mr. Vaughan, or Theo. as he is generally called, came to Clemson when children were wee tots and old men were boys. He was graduated from Clemson in 19 24 and has been at Clemson ever since except for a brief time spent in business. Theo has rendered fine service through the Clemson Y and is loved and respected by all Clemson men. Mr. Cooper, or Roy, as he is generally spoken of, is our genial third man on the staff. Cooper was the first man to be tried out in the capacity of a third secretary and he so ably did his work that the members of the Board were unanimous in wanting to have him continue with us. Much valuable service has been rendered by Mr. Cooper and many fellows have learned to respect his judgment and seek his counsel. Things Attempted — Things Accomplished BIBLE STUDY COMMITTEE M. B. STEVENSON. Chairman BYRD, CLAYTON, MCLAURIN. Assistants Teachers: Reverend Hodges. Rev. Satterlee, Rev. Clarke. Rev. Crouch, Professors Hunter. Martin. W. B. Aull. G. H. Aull. Burton, Klugh. Marshall. Kinard. Williams. Lewis. Dr. Mills: Secretaries Holtzendorff, Vaughan and Cooper. 230 Freshmen enrolled. 150 books furnished. Student Standards of Action studied. 345 and more enrolled in the study of The Meaning of Faith. 1.000 copies of the Gospel of John given to students. 1.000 copies of the Gospel of St. Luke given to students. NEW STUDENT COMMITTEE Earl C. Murdoch. Chairman About twenty assisted on this committee. These men met trains, assisted the Freshmen with matriculation and endeavored in many ways to be real friends to these new men when they needed friendly counsel and advice. Visited many Freshmen, helped put on Freshman Night. and in many ways tried to make these new boys realize that they were Clemson men and Christian gentlemen. RELIGIOUS PROGRAMS L. H. GRAHAM, Chairman Assistants: CADET YOUNG, MRS. DAN LEWIS, and others Average attendance at these Sunday night union services ranges from 350 to 400. On several occasions we have had over 400 and on two occasions about 500 each night. Pictures of almost every country have been shown, and the sermons and talks have been exceptionally inspiring. Some months we have followed a theme such as: The Influence of Christianity on: 1. Civilization: 2. Our Nation: 3. Some Outstanding Individuals. We have had a splendid orchestra and the fellows all seem to take a keen delight in making the song service a real praise service. Mrs. Dan Lewis is due much of the credit for the fine music and for lots of special music. CONFERENCES C. W. STROMAN, Chairman We have had a number of men to attend different conferences. Usually most of them attend the State Student Volunteer Conference and the Blue Ridge Student Conference. This year we had only a small delegation but hope to have the officers for 1929-1930 and a large delegation of students at the Annual Students ' Conference at Blue Ridge. N. C, in June. Page Three Hundred GOSPEL TEAMS D. C. TURRENTINE, Chairman One delegation has been to Anderson College, one is to go to Winthrop on the 13th of March and we hope to have another go to Tamassee and probably two or three other places. The purpose of this team is to train and interest men in the actual doing of Christian work. We have had some very fine delegations go out from Clemson and hope to have even better in the future. PUBLICITY H. L. SHANDS. Chairman Assistants: RENTZ AND VAUGHAN This committee had charge of the writing, selection and compiling of news and data for the columns of The Tiger. Write-ups of the weekly meetings, special meetings, and things of unusual merit as well as news from different parts of the world pertaining to Y. M. C. A. and some select poems and quotations being offered. BOYS ' WORK Harold Heller. Chairman Assistants: FRED KlRCHNER. MR. HOLTZY. THAMES, McDANlEL. BRIDGES. COOPER Several groups were taken out on hikes, groups met Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons for play and for swims. The midget basketball team met on these and other occasions for basketball. Several play parties were conducted by the Y and quite an extensive program was conducted in the summer and through the Daily Vacation Bible School. SOCIAL J. F. CALLAHAM. Chairman A number of men were called upon to assist with this work. A group from the Freshman class and some older classmen helping with Freshman Night. Sophomores and Juniors and Seniors helping with their respective nights. Several members assisted with the entertainment of the Business Woman ' s Club. This committee was in charge of decorations and assisted greatly with the Foreign Work Supper when 1 1 5 students and members of the faculty gathered to discuss the foreign work of the Y. M. C. A., and to listen to a gifted orator in the person of Mr. S-. C. Leaug. National General Secretary of the Y. M. C. A., in Canton. China. In this connection might be mentioned the fact that over thirty feature pictures were shown free during the year and a great many news and travel pictures were shown free, also. This enabled each student to have the privilege of seeing at least one picture each week without cost to him. CHURCH RELATIONS T. W. WEBB. Chairman Assisting in this work were representatives from the different young people ' s societies of the different churches. This committee decided upon union services once each month and had numerous union socials, one of the outstanding services being the one conducted by the young ladies from the D. A. R. school at Tamassee. Mr. Ralph Cain is in charge of this school. Mr. Cain is a Clemson graduate and Mrs. Cain is a Winthrop graduate. These services have been found to be most helpful and stimulating. EVENING WATCH J. M. EADDY. Chairman Several men from each company are selected as the assistants on the committee. Due to the time of long roll and reveille, no groups were organized during the first part of the year. An effort was made to get the men to read a portion of the Bible daily. Copies of the Gospel of John were given out and a talk made in chapel urging the men to set aside a part of the day for Bible reading and prayer. It is hoped that we will have at least one company prayer group organized on each company hall before school closes and get a good start next year. Page Three Hundred One Calhoua AA £M££ UM4. More clothing, more textile fabrics for use in the home are being sold simply because color has a universal sales appeal. Manufacturers in the textile field are not only aware of the rapidly growing demand among con sumers for color but colors which are fast. Du Pont dyes are available which satisfactorily fill this requirement, dyes which impart to textile fabrics the enduring color qualities the public is being taught to expect.
