Director L m RIGGS HALL The Engineers of ' 28 rendered their first service to the college by dis- covering that the old engineering clock in the vine-entangled tower had stopped. For two years this engineering class, the largest in the history of the school, crowded its activities within the walls of this old building whose antiquated classrooms and equipment were in keeping with the unmoved hands of the ' clock. There were dreams of a new Engineering Building and equipment, but little hope for their realization. Then, as though fate had timed the act. Com- mencement of ' 26 found the old structure in smoldering ashes — a martvr to engineering progress. A new building was now inevitable but would it become a reality before the graduation of the class of ' 28. ' ' During the Junior year gang-plank gossip, classroom discussions, and universal speculation among the students seemed to avail little in deciding this momentous question. In the meantime, classes were being held in every available nook and corner of the campus: old dwell- ings, basements, out-grown churches and the like. Fortunately the Legislature realized the pressing need of C lemson. and through the unceasing efforts of Col. Allen Johnstone the heretofore vague hopes for a new building became a reality. The Seniors returned in the fall of ' 27 to find the new building under rapid construction. Although this class has had scant opportunity to make use of Riggs Hall, it has the satisfaction of knowing that Clemson has one of the most modern and best-equipped Engineering Buildings in the South. CLEMSON REMINISCENCES AND PRESAGES eLEMSON COLLEGE is the result of the ambition, scholarship, experience and vision of Thomas G. Clemson. The institution reflects the culmination of years of study and thought in the field of science, particularly in the field of agricultural science. The College is situated on the old Fort Hill estate. Three- fourths of the estate was willed to Mrs. Clemson, a daughter of Mrs. John C Calhoun; but at the death of Mrs. Calhoun the estate was sold at public auction to pay some old mortgages. Mr. Clemson. with the help of his wife, purchased the estate. In 1889 the General Assembly of South Carolina proceeded to convert Thomas G. Clemson ' s dream into a reality. The College was opened in July. 1893. with an enrollment of 446 students. The College made steady advancement from 1893 to 1911 under its three presidents. Clemson was beginning to be of vital importance to the state when Dr. Riggs took the president ' s chair. Dr. Riggs came to the institution in 1896 as coach and engineer- ing instructor and served in this capacity until 1901. when he was elected to direct the engineering department. In 1911 he was made president of the College. Research in the fields of agriculture, tex- tiles, livestock and fertilizers entered the constructive as well as in- structive stage during his time at Clemson. The agricultural ex- tension service became of value to the state and the engineering de- partment advanced beyond its embryonic period. While he was the executive the Clemson Tiger took many high honors. Dr. Riggs died in Washington, at a Land Grant Conference, on January 22, 1 924. The memory of him will ever be revered in the minds of those who knew him and his work. Professor Earle, the present director of the engineering depart- ment, served in the capacity of president from the time of Dr. Riggs ' death until September, 1925. At the beginning of the 1925-26 school term the liberal- minded, constructive Dr. Sikes became president of the College. The president is a clear-thinking man with a striking personality. Under his splendid guidance Clemson has taken enormous strides toward perfection and has been placed on the list of accredited col- leges in the South. Some of the many advancements which have resulted from his untiring efforts are the erection of new engineering and shop buildings, the acquisition of one of the finest coaching staffs in the South, the introduction of mass athletics, the selection of competent professors, and the molding of an adequate curriculum. These changes have helped raise tlie enrollment to 1,210 students. The very highest praise is due Dr. Sikes for the progress the College has made thus far under his administration. What the future holds for Clemson with a man like Dr. Sikes as her president is not hard to imagine. Before many years Clemson will probably have a new gymnasium, a new textile building, a new barracks and another engineering building, all of which will be equipped to meet the highest standards. Future years will see con- structive changes in all courses and see Clemson take the seat of honor in athletics again. From these reminiscences and presages Clemson should rank among the foremost colleges in the country , and her students should be of untold value to the State and Nation. S. W. Sackman. Back in the fall of ' 24 when over four hundred wild-eyed freshmen disembarked in the front of the Main Building, all of their dignity was stripped in a moment. Large, robust Sophs, the kind that we had heard so much about, we were now privileged to see. A care- free year followed, every day brought something new. Then all of a sudden we were sophisticated Sophomores. Sophomore days were not what they seemed, nobody loves a Sopho- more, and we wished that we were Rats again. Juniordom was our next goal and soon it was reached. Then days began to pass — we were on the brink of dignity. Since we have passed through all of the stages necessary for a college education it all seems as a fond memory — a memory that shall linger on. Happiness and fun; gloom and darkness, have been our lot. We have rejoiced and suffered together. Great changes have been wrought since our green days of ' 25. Changes for the better, progress necessitates changes. The changes are quite apparent to the members of our class; the bull ring , post- walking, and a few other unnecessary things have passed on. We are now out of college and in the great University of Life; some of us have a good start and others of us are handicapped. It is now too late, we have to make the best of it. The Moving Finger icrites: and. having writ, Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wil Shall lure it hack to cancel half a line Nor all your tears wash out a word of il. M. M. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY OO ALMOST three hundred Juniors the date of September (O 13, 1927. is very memorable. We had met with great suc- cess both as Freshmen and as Sophomores. Now we were scrambling to matriculate and try our luck as Juniors. It was a merry time as friend hailed friend, and old acquaintances were re- newed. No longer were we sophisticated Sophomores! Already we had assumed something of that dignity and pride which so often characterizes a young Junior. While we were matriculating, even among our laughter and good cheer, a seriousness and an earnest- ness of purpose could be seen in every face, as we slowly pushed our way along the hall, in and out of each office. It was not easy for us to accustom ourselves to the old col- lege atmosphere again; that was one of our most difficult tasks. But soon we were on our way again, determined to succeed. And how well have we succeeded! Yet success did not come at our bidding: we have had to fight and toil, watching and seizing our oppor- tunities as they came. We have occupied an outstanding place in athletics. The notable work of Pressley. Hall. Davis, and Snowden should cer- tainly not pass unmentioned. In other phases of athletics, also, we have shown our untiring work. Our past is bright: our future is even brighter. And now. with the thought of our Senior year looming just before us. we begin to realize our responsibilities: we look forward with yearning eyes and with eager anticipation. What does the future hold. ' ' May we not be forgiven for speculating. Look back upon the past. Hardships and troubles, pit-falls and snares have beset us on every hand. But we have won; thus far we have won. and the battle is ours. Let us take courage and go forward more determined than ever; for there are other battles to fight, and there are other tasks to perform. Ours is a triumphant banner, and we shall proudly bear it on to our goal. G. M. Dickinson. Junior Class Historian. SOWCMC CS ADA. 7Vt)G.. . ADA Ab.O.A. ALl.l50A,J.tt. AMiLR50n.G.ffl. AAl?TlA,A.H J SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY 0N SEPTEMBER 13. 1927. about four hundred ex-rats, now the dignified Sophomores, arrived at Clemson. We thought, after having answered our last new-boy call, that we would rest on flowery beds of ease for the rest of our college career. We were sadly mistaken. Big Ben for the ags. Wee Willie for the engineers, and Bill for the chemists soon taught us that Sophomore only meant suffermore. Low marks and demerits were handed out to us so generously that we were soon knee-deep in them. We. realizing our situ- ation at the end of the first term when blue slips were all the mail that came on the company halls for two days, snapped out of it and came out successfully at the end of the semester. Last year we had a taste of Freshman life and its knocks, there- fore we tried to be light on rats. We could almost call ourselves chicken-hearted, but the rats seemed to have the opinion that we should be called rough on rats. They would lie around on the campus in their spare time gazing around at the trees just thinking, as though they were nature poets. Over half of our successful Tiger Eleven was made up of Sophs: a thing that we are proud of. Not only in this sport was our class well represented but also in basketball, boxing, baseball and track. We were equally prominent in all other college activities. And now. as Father Time mows away the days, bringing be- fore us the close of our Sophomore year and the beginning of our Junior year, we will strive on with unfailing courage to give our best for the glory and honor of Clemson. YOUNGBLOOD FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY iHE day of September 6. 1927, at last arrived and it will long Lfj remain in our minds: for on that day we entered college to spend the best four years of our life. The remainder of the week, known as Freshman Week, was spent in getting the new boys (as we were to be known for the following school year) acquainted with the professors and the college in general. Another day will also be long remembered: this was September 13, 1927. On that day the old boys swept down on us like the wolf on the fold, cutting our hair off in hunks and also cutting otherwise. The call of new boy, the sight of a broom, and the sound of a bell nearly caused grey hairs to replace our youthful locks. We were made to feel so unnecessary and obscure by the uppers that we thought it hardly worthwhile to be at college. As we became accustomed to the ways of Ole Clemson, our ideals came floating back to us and we began to settle down to work. Not many days had passed before the new boys scented the true Tiger spirit and became full- fledged cubs. Our rat football team did not have the misfortune of last year ' s rat team to lose the State Championship by one point. The 1927 Cubs marched straight to the championship crown through all the opposition the State could offer. Our rat basket- ball team was not to be outdone by the football team, so they took up the march where the football team left off and annexed a Fresh- man State Championship in basketball. Judging from the excel- lent material on hand it seems as though our baseball team will likewise bring home the bacon. The time is fast approaching when we shall be changed from the new boy into the old boy. Every true Tiger Cub has within him the spirit of our Freshman class: he may long for the time when he will become a Soph, but always in his mind will linger those cherished memories of his Freshman year at Clemson. Before the largest crowd ever to attend an athletic exhibition in South Carolina, the Jungaleers crushed the Gamecocks. Never before has the esprit de corps been roused more. The Tigers, backed by the entire Cadet Corps, entered this tilt to win and al- though dame fortune denied them for three periods, their drive continued and found a glorious reward in the last few minutes of the game. Captain Bud Eskew led the assault that smashed the Carolinians to overwhelming defeat and was the star of stars, for every Clemson warrior must he classed as such in a game so well-played. Every Clemson warrior performed well, and the unerring toe of P.p Timmerman did not fail when the crucial moment arrived. CLEMSON 7— N. C. STATE 18 An unexpected defeat. Bud Eskews stellar work won him honorable mention for a place on the mythical All- Southern eleven. CLEMSON 0— FURMAN 28 A defeat for which we make no excuses. W ' c believe that the Tigers were as strong as the Hurricane but an erratic und listless game gave them a just score. We regret our loss but look forward to a different score in our next Thanksgiving Dav game when we hope to throw off the jinx that Furman has held over us for the past four vears We remember with pride, the work of O K. and Harlan Pressley in this disaster. The squad, composed of men of little experience, met many adverses during the early part of the season. Game after game avoided their grasp, but each by a smaller margin. Each contest saw a marked improvement in the Tiger play, however, and by mid-season they had passed the novitiate stage and were playing stellar ball. Their efforts were well rewarded, and BAILEY ODELL FORWARD M ' CARLly GVARO SIMS the defeat of several strong Conference teams made the Jungaleers eligible for the Southern Conference meet in Atlanta, where they acquitted themselves well, losing to Auburn, the runners-up for championship honors, by one point. N. Geddings Some Facts: 1. The Clemson Y. M. C. A. was organized in 1895. The first full-time secretary was Mr. Ray Legate, secured in 1906. The building was completed in 1915 and opened the first of January. 1916. The cost was $78,000.00 complete — furnished. The money was raised by contributions from Rockefeller for fifty thousand, the Board of Trustees for fifteen thousand, students, alumni, faculty and friends $10,000.00. Paid off since erection $3,000.00. The College furnishes heat, lights, water and repairs, also $500.00 towards one of the secretary ' s salary. The other expense of secretaries, janitors, men employed in the building, building supplies, cost of program — all is raised by means of memberships, proceeds from picture shows, game rooms and rentals from dormitory. State Tax $1,337.75 through March 21. 1928— Paid. I.MPROVEMENTS: During the past year there have been manv improve- ments in the Y. M. C. A. building, one of the most helpful being the purchase and installation of two large fans to furnish proper ventilation for the audi- torium. Another was the purchase of new curtams. draperies and flowers for the Reading Room, another being the securing of Mrs. Hodges as part-time Hostess, and still another being the purchase of considerable new furniture and the repair of other furniture. New rooms with permanent partitions. Quite a bit of painting in the cafe and other parts of the building. 1 he addition of a third full-time secretary in the person of Mr. J. R. Cooper. Family mem- berships. THE Y. M. C. A. SWIMMING POOL The swimming pool is a thing of interest and value in developing men physically. Men need to know how to swim and. too, there is probably no better exercise. Such an accommodation is found in the swimming pool of the Y. M. C. A. ' T he pool is always filled with good water and is kept in good condition. During the winter the water is heated to a comfortable temperature so that those who enjoy this sport need not wait for a good swim. Special hours have been arranged for children and ladies on the campus, and cadets use the pool at other times. The swimming team uses the pool for practice and life saving tests are given there also. Therefore, the swimming pool is used by the cadets and many of the campus people and many of them hardly see how they could get the pleasure and development derived there from any other source. THE Y. M. C. A. GYMNASIUM A tired mind, a weary step; an hour of play, a world of pep. The Y gvmnasium. although not a large one, affords to the students and people of the community an opportunity to keep fit by exercising daily. Each Mon- day evening, members of the faculty gather for an hour of volleyball or other games. Company basket- ball and volleyball tourna- ments are conducted for the cadets in order to en courage them to exercise more. A number of the more energetic fellows ex- ceed the daily dozen by indulging in a bit of wrestling a n d boxing. The girls of the com- munity also enjoy many happy hours of play on the court. THE Y. M. C. A. AUDITORIUM With a seating capacity o f approximately four hundred, and comfortably ventilated by two large fans, this auditorium serves many needs at Clemson. It is here that the successful Sunday evening meetings are held, having an average attend- ance of over three hun dred. Likewise, the audi torium lends itself to the social needs of man. The campus people and stu- dents gather for an even ing of fellowship and mirth on many occasions such as class nights or com- munity socials. The little folks are given free motion picture programs on Saturday mornings and Monday afternoons. The auditorium also serves as the community theatre: thus, it is here that the Clemson people see the leading motion picture productions of the year. Practically every department of the College has occasion to use the audi- torium for class purposes during the year. THE CLEMSON Y. M. C. A. CAFETERIA Although called a cafeteria, this is in reality a dining room and lunch room. This portion of the building is rented to Mrs. Mary Albergotti and is operated for the convenience of transients, guests of the College and of the Y, M. C. A. and for extra-curricula nourishment for the students. This is equipped with some very good fixtures and has electric refrigeration. The cafeteria is open all times from early morning until late at night. Mrs. Albergotti has consist-- ently tried to keep open for the accommodation of special groups and for special occasions. Al- though it is located on the bottom floor of the build- ing and rather out of the way, yet it is attractively operated and maintained so that those who find the way once know to return. MENUS FRATERNITY AND CLASS INSERTS FOR ANNUALS -t ZEPHYRS OF A QUIET AFTERNOON h was an ideal day for football, snow covered the ground ro a depth of two feet, six inches, icicles dropped from the trees, while the only relief from the swelter ing heat was afforded by numerous fans which overspread the field of battle. The stands were filled at an early hour, the stands were a mass of waving pennants, their wavers numbering some 10,000 souls. It was rumored that several persons were turned away by Bear Gee. The Horde was the first to take the tield. led by their sturdy Captain Pop Glenn. John Lane showed off his team by demonstrating a few of the latest dance steps. They ran a few signals, then retired to the end of the field where they relapsed into their weekly crap game. The chunks were received by an ovation only surpassed by that of their opponents. Red Carpenter tried to frighten his opponents by rendering the obligato from Sears and Roebuck in the key of F. But Bill L.ippincott came back with a horse laugh which evened things up. Promptly at 5:48 ' 4 , Lord Collings kicked I off 10,000 centimeters, the ball ascribing a beautiful parabolic arc and striking Will s Rogers ' Clarke on the head while he was deeply engrossed in an explanation of I the whichness of what for the benefit of Pus Johnson. Slide Hodge slipped I around right end for a gain of eighteen yards and was downed by Big Ben i Goodale who mistook him for a cow. Rabbi Holtzendorff and Shoe Shuholtz 1 were put out of the game for profanity and fighting on the next play. j At this juncture Mrs. Pickens rang the supper bell at the Hotel and the Horde I scurried from the field thinking they were going to get something to eat. Referee 1 Lifsey awarded the game to the chunks, basing his award on paragraph 981 cadet j regulations and everyone left the field happy. J 1 I COMPLIMENTS OF I 1 WILLIAM C. ROWLAND. More clothing, more textile fabrics for use in the home are being sold simply because color has a universal sale s appeal. Manufacturers in the textile field are not only aware of the rapidly growing demand among consumers for color but colors which are fast. Du Pont dyes are available which satisfac- torily fill this requirement, dyes which impart to textile fabrics the enduring color qualities the public is being taught to expect. Dan McGrew of Clemson (With Apologies to R. W, Service) A bunch of Cadets were whooping it up al Martin ' s on the road to Calhoun. The boy that handles the soda fount was humming a popular tunc. At a table up front with a dope in his hand sat the noble Slim McCant. And staring at him with love in her eyes was the beautiful Ella Fant, Then out of the night, which was dark and light, and into the welcome retreat. There strolled a Cadet fresh from his studies, and. Oh. he looked so sweet. His face was worn, his collar was torn, and his underwear was of silk. And he flipped a dime at the soda boy and called for a Chocolate Milk. No one knew who the Cadet was, and we all turned round for a look. He didn ' t mind and drank right on. with his right hand twined round a book. | Then the Cadet turned from his chocolate milk, which by now he had almost i inhaled. I In a khaki suit made by Rowland, he up and said lo the gang. | ' There ' s a few lillle words I ' d like to say. and his visage suddenly paled. | I ' m awfully ruff and very tutf. and I sure don ' t give a Dang I want to say in a military way. and no one must say I shan ' t. J That one Cadet here is a Tea-hound clear and that one is Slim McCant. I Then I shut my eyes and the girlie screamed, two voices were heard on the air. C ' lief Allison came. I opened my eyes and saw with a half wild stare. Sitting there propped in the chair once filled by the noble McCant, Was the stranger grand holding the hand of the lovely Ella Fant. i LIVINGSTONE COMPANY P. N.
