NORMAN STALEY HAROLD STEWART BILLY WILLIAMS Act 1 fyecttuA i I CLASS HISTORY In September, 1943, the curtain was raised on our twelve years here at the C. H. S. Playhouse. Mrs. Nona Watkins and Mrs. Bynum Davis wereourfirst directors and Mr. Theodore Rondthaler, our first producer. Looking over the audi¬ ence we saw smiles of contentment on the faces of Jane Lowder, Martha Llewel lyn, Ada Lou Boyer, Bobby Hellard, and Ted Stewart. Looking very dignified and re¬ served were: Wayne Ellingham, Peggy Bingham, Myrtle Binkley, Maxine Flora, Rosemary Shoaf, and Harvey Davis. Throwing paper airplanes were: Vance Hartley, Ralph Sides, John Parks, and Mickey Cumby. At the intermission we saw Shirley Flynn, Murrianne Linker, Arlene Lutz, Wilma Jones, and Buddy Kimel, laughing and talking gaily. In a secluded spot, imitating our directors with hilar¬ ious antics were: Alton Clinard, Carol Tise, Robert Spaugh, Edna Sloan, and Mike Parks. Sitting sedately in their seats after the intermission were Margaret Church, Geraldine Scott, Annette Crater, Evelyn Ellis, and Barbara Bodsford. Tommy Isley, Donald Bodford, Harry Caudle, Douglas Brewer, and William Snyder were very anxious to get back to “Cowboys and Indians.” Looking bored and quite disgusted were Ann Ashley, Jeanette Quinn, Pat Stewart, Nancy Wrights, and Shirley Craver. Not having much appreciation for drama and confinement at this early age were: Moody Bowers, Jimmy Smith, Columbus Case, Billy Boles, and Dean Howard who were relieved to see the final curtain of their first year at school. Joining our company in its second year were: Rex Cheek, Robert Parrish, Coleen Peoples, Rennie Smith, and Marvin Ridings. That year our troupe had an unusual record of not losing any members and our directors were Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Burgess. Under the direction of Mrs. McBrayer and Mrs. Craver, and our new pro¬ ducer, Mr. Gibbs, quite a few young ladies and gentlemen joined our troupe. These were Libby Bullard, Archie Wiles, Inez Smith, Joe Goodman, Carrie Craver, Ruth Deszern, Lindon Canter, Evelyn Ellis, Elizabeth Hauser, Robert Parrish, Mable Satterfield, and Marvin Spaugh. The very successful year of 1946-47, our fourth year at Clemmons we were directed by Mrs. Gibbs and Miss Truett. Joining us were: Paul Crotts, Billie Brewer, C. L. Cheek, David Bowen, Lee Weisner, Jerry Graham, Patricia Harper, Joe Holder, Jimmy Sheets, and Peggy Tysinger. Those making the announcement that they were leaving at the end of the year were: Libby Bullard, Peggy Ty¬ singer, Barbara Bodsford, Garrie Craver, Gene Ellis, and Jimmy Sheets. By our fifth year we were really beginning to feel like real troupers and were strengthened by Janie Vaught, Bernice Griffith, Bessie Beauchamp, Libby Bul¬ lard, Dewitt Falls, Ernest Herbert Tesh, Theodore Tilley, John Webster, Clyde Beck, and Hal Transou. However, at the end of the year, the following departed from our troupe: Jerry Graham, Columbus Case, Lindon Cantor, Shirley Sloan, Inez Smith, Julia Stilley, John Webster, and Lloyd Wrights. Our directors for this year were Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Potts. In our sixth year at C. H. S. under the direction of Miss Coble and Mrs. Moody, only three joined our noble clan: Louise Harris, George Hair, and Anne Cline. Resigning at the conclusion of this year were: David Bowen, Myrtle Bink¬ ley, Anne Cline, Clyde Beck, Patricia Harper, Hal Transou, and Joe Holder. With the arrival of a new producer, Mr. Potts, came a new look about our playhouse, as it was freshly renovated. Under the direction of Mr. Pope and Mr. Smith we had a very enjoyable seventh year as Charles Payne, Ray Doty, Marvin Harpe, and Doug Payne joined us. This year we received our first taste of com¬ petitive sports, as an elementary basketball team, complete with cheerleaders, was formed by Mr. Smith. At the end of the year we were saddened by the depar¬ ture of Harvey Davis, Joe Goodman, Ernest Griffith, Dean Howard, Martha Llewel¬ lyn, Doug Payne, Pat Stewart and Archie Wiles. Feeling professional in this, our eighth year, we were permitted several CLASS HISTORY privileges which we had not yet enjoyed. Under the leadership ot a new producer, Mr. Lester, and our directors, Miss Noble and Mrs. Crotts, we acquired two new members Kenneth Blakely and Eugene Templeton. After this year of rapid transi¬ tion Herbert Tesh, Theodore Tilley, and Marvin Harpe departed from our company. We were rapidly approaching our ultimate goal of graduating into the stardom of our future life in this, our ninth year. Peggy Douthit, Gene Livengood, Roy Holman, and Charles Shumaker joined us while we were under the directorship of our advisors Miss Hicks and Mr. Ostrander. This year we organized our troupe and the following officers served us diligently: Arlene Lutz, President; Harry Caudle, Vice-President; Billie Brewer, Secretary; and William Snyder, Treasurer. We suffered a great loss in number as Rex Cheek, C. L. Cheek, Ruth Deszern, Dewitt Falls, Ray Doty, Roy Holman, Joe Medford, John Parks, Jean Saunders, Rennie Smith, Charles Shumaker, Ted Stewart, Nancy Wrights, and Wiley Tuttle left our ranks. After the saddening experience of the loss of one of our members, Milton Hudson by accidental death, we returned to our tenth year to discover an illustri¬ ous new leader in Mr. Robert E. Chilton and new advisors, Mrs. Butner and Mr. Shropshire. The lone addition to our noble clan was Richard Jones who joined us from the Hanes Playhouse. At the end of this season Eugene Templeton and Kenneth Blakely resigned from our company. Our hardworking officers for this year were Harry Caudle, President; Libby Bullard, Vice-President; Wilma Jones, Secretary; and Peggy Bingham, Treasurer. At the threshold of our eleventh year with only two years remaining in our stint here at Clemmons our top social production was the Junior-Senior Banquet. Another top hit was “Let’s Face It”, presented by members of our company. Re¬ turning from the previous year was Mr. Chilton and our new advisors were Miss Hampton and Mr. Moody. Our Yankee friend, Naomi Bennett, along with Clyde Beck joined us this year. Chosen by the troupe for the officers for this year were Bill Snyder, Presi¬ dent; George Hair, Vice-President; Peggy Bingham, Secretary; and Harry Caudle, Treasurer. Because of the acquisition of lifetime partners Annette Crater, Colleen Peoples, and Shirley Wooten announced their resignations which would become effective at the end of the year. As we enter into our final performance at our beloved Clemmons Playhouse, we feel that we have attained much vital preparation for our future which lies beyond this, our grand finale. All the members of our troupe, poised for their plunge into stardom, are: Anne Ashley, Bessie Beauchamp, Clyde Beck, Naomi Bennett, Peggy Bingham, Donald Bodsford, Moody Bowers, Ada Lou Boyer, Billie Brewer, Douglas Brewer, Harry Caudle, Margaret Church, Alton Clinard, Paul Crotts, Mickey Cumby, Peggy Douthit, Wayne Ellingham, Maxine Flora, Shirley Flynn, Bernice Griffith, George Hair, Louise Harris, Vance Hartley, Jennie Hel- lard, Tommy Isley, Richard Jones, Wilma Jones, Buddy Kimel, Murrianne Linker, Gene Livengood, Jane Lowder, Arlene Lutz, Mike Parks, Charles Payne, Jeanette Quinn, Marvin Ridings, Geraldine Scott, Rosemary Shoaf, Ralph Sides, Jimmy Smith, William Snyder, Carol Tise, Janie Vaught, and Lee Weisner. Leading us in our last and most difficult year were: Buddy Kimel, Presi¬ dent; Wayne Ellingham, Vice-President; Arlene Lutz, Secretary; Billie Brewer, Assistant Secretary; and Shirley Flynn, Treasurer. As the curtain rings down at last, we express our heart-felt thanks to al! who have made our brief stay here most enjoyable and beneficial. MURRIANNE LINKER BILL SNYDER • Historians CLASS PROPHECY The snow is softly falling as the class of ’55 is arriving in New York City for the grand opening of the Blue Streak Playhouse, owned by Wayne Ellingham. The main attraction is the opening of a broadway musical called, “Work With Me Annie,” written by the famous playwright, Buddy Kimel. The star of the show is our own nationally known hit singer, Wilma Jones and co-stars that great singer of romantic ballads, Bill Snyder. Leading the band which provides background music for this popular show is Bobby Hellard, with Moody Bowers as his soloist. The producer is Murrianne Linker, already a proven success in Hollywood. Hand¬ ling advertising for the show are Bessie Beauchamp and Rosemary Shoaf who are rising fast in the advertising business. The stage-hands for a play of this type are also earning a profitable salary of $777.77 a week, and who should have these jobs but Jimmy Smith and Charles Payne. Now arriving is the famous architect and contractor, Paul Crotts, with his secretary Geraldine Scott. He built this new theatre for the tidy sum of 50 mil¬ lion dol Iars. There are several cabs out front which belong to the greatest taxi company in New York City, owned by Mike Parks and Mickey Cumby. They have given up stock car racing and made their cars into taxis, because they thought it would be more exciting. In the audience are many members of the class of ’55 who have become fam¬ ous. Carol Tise has just won the Olympic high jumping contest. Shirley Flynn has just completed a series of radio programs called “Advice to the Lovelorn,” which were sponsored by the Butner Sporting Goods Company, of which Richard Jones is President. Sitting down front is George Hair, the manager of the largest grocery store in the world, which is located in Clemmons, North Carolina. Along¬ side him is Peggy Bingham, who models the latest fashions from Paris. Naomi Bennett arrived today from Russia where she has been on a nation-wide skating tour. With her is her business manager and chief carrier, Vance Hartley. Ada Lou Boyer, who is now coach of Clemmons University girls basketball team, is here with her family. But life’s hands bid us come To test our wings and fly And with God’s help, good luck and health We’ll work and we’ll gain, we’ll give of our best And we’ll never walk alone We’ll never walk alone. Farewell, Farewell, we’ve been so happy here And we’ll miss you all we know So thank you each one For all you have done And we’ll say good bye for now Walk on, walk on, with love in our hearts And we’ll never walk alone We’ll never walk alone. PEGGY BINGHAM BILLIE BREWER Four years ago, the curtain rose and there began A drama which the world was not to see. We, as freshmen stepped onto a stage unknown Afraid of this new role, as only kids can be. We’ve suffered failure, but we ' ve also heard applause. We ' ve worked and fought and held to what is right. But now our run is over and we’ve yet to reach the top, The goal we strive to gain is still in sight. As the curtain falls we offer thanks to Clemmons High, We’ve learned so many things within these walls. But now, dear friends, the day draws very near To bid you fond farewell; the mystic future calls.
