Jerry Peoples T estators Diane Sheek 41 CLASS HISTORY The first performance of our twelve years in school began in 1942. Bashful and afraid of all the new surroundings, we tiptoed into our rooms with our teacher Mrs. Stillwell, and our principal, Mr. Rondthaler, to find with us Joyce Church with her long black hair, Betty Hayes fighting with the boys, Barbara Hunter singing to herself, Nancy Moody crying for her mother and Ann William¬ son who was just plain dazed with all that was going on. Then came our mis¬ chievous Jackie Matlock, Shirley Poindexter with a little brown notebook, and Sammy Smith who wasn’t too thrilled about it all. Next came Frank Beckner, Richard Boner and Bobby Keaton looking for a fight, and Martha Wishon with a smile for everyone, and Peggy Todd with her long girlish curls. In walked Diane Sheek in her little short dress looking for Betty Scott who soon appeared with skinned knees, Jay Caudle ready for an education and William Creasy and Harry Davis eager to get away from it all to play ball. Who could it be but Sam Easley with a little camera in his hand, Myrtle Binkley tall and lanky, Shirley Smith and Shirley Craver getting acquainted, Billy Bean, Walter Tysinger and Jimmy Beck with water pistols, Alma Spaugh, Doris Anderson and Nancy Canter with little enthusiasm, Pansy Sloan with tears in her eyes and Peggy Tesh always arguing. Next cartie our little but loud Cleo and Leo Teague. Rennie Smith quiet but mischievous, Peggy Tysinger with pigtails, Alvin Ratledge, Edwin Robertson and Wade H awk came in dirty and mad after fighting, and last we saw Columbus Case. In the second grade we were lucky to have with us again Mrs. Stillwell. This year we received our long-awaited rings. We were proud to welcome to Clemmons our Junior year, Mr. Robert Chilton as our principal, with his inspiration, his great love, and understanding. But we are not finished, only beginning a new life that has been molded for us here at Clemmons High School. Without the help of our administration and faculty, our preparation would have been in vain. We can only say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. As we leave, we wish to everyone of you, the best of luck, success and happiness and may God bless you all. Sincerely, Betty Scott Sam Easley 43 CLASS PROPHECY Come to the 1954 circus! The Boner Boden- hammer’s greatest show on earth! There’s nothing like a circus! The tent was filled, and out of all the dust, music, and laughter comes —“Peanuts, pop-corn, and crackerjacks!” The booming voice sounds familiar, as our memory re¬ calls the years in high school, long past, when William Creasy’s voice was a threat to all the teachers. We bought some pop-corn, and to our surprise, we were eating “Setliff’s Home-popped Corn.” We later learned Maxine had a factory called “Maxine’s Cornery” in the heart of Clem¬ mons. The circus caravan started, and all eyes opened when the caravan was headed by a huge gray ele¬ phant. As it slowly trucked around the rings, we noticed its trunk was carrying the star trapez artist of the circus. She looked small beside the elephant; only Jacquline Matlock’s black tennis shoes could be seen. The feathers in her long, dark hair swayed as the elephant slung her ’round and ’round. Looking closer, we saw our old pal Bill Beshears driving a ’64 bitter-sweet black Mercury. He is now an Admiral in our Great Navy. The procession continued into the main attrac¬ tion. Suddenly a figure appeared and climbed swiftly into the mouth of the cannon. It was no¬ body but our own Stanley (Dare-Devil) Dunn! The crowd hushed as a cannon exploded. But no one came out. An ambulance, with the siren blast¬ ing, came at full speed down to the ring. Out jumped Shirley Poindexter and Martha Wishon in white uniforms. Ina Grace Rattz quickly got out from under the wheel. The nurses pulled Stanley out, and the crowd was breathless after the exciting episode. Every circus must have clowns, and the Boner Bodenhammer’s aren’t lacking in this! Bobby Keaton and James Sloan look as though they haven’t changed much through the years. James’ golden wig becomes him and Bobby looks natural in the red nose and black and white suit. We learned that both men are now worth millions of dollars. James owns a small newspaper in New York. I recall the name of the paper as being “Times”! Bobby has his sideline interest in the undertaking business; “Keaton’s Karriers.” As we look around us, we see many familiar faces. Jerry Peoples looks distinguished in his Homburg derby. Since he was elected mayor of Peoplesville, Diane Sheek has quit her job at Clemmons H-Bomb Factory, and is now making other explosives. Nancy Moody is new cheerlead ¬ ing for the Giants, and for her side-line job, she sings with “Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians.” Fashion designer La Mary Charles designed the costumes for the circus. She has her own shop on Stadium Drive. Everybody turns out for a circus! There is Odell (Lightening) Cheek! We heard that he is now head coach at the University of Atwood and doing a fine job. Speaking of sports, Joe Bullins just walked in; the audience recognized Joe at once. He just won the World International Senior Golf Tournament that was held in the thriving Metro¬ polis of Hanes, N. C. Several businesses have been built in Hanes. Roy Wrights, Gilbert Brandon and Bill Ellis own a large dairy. They even say the cows are pas¬ teurized. Doris Pople, Pat Hendrix and Sammy Smith are very elegant ladies these days. They operate a beauty salon in Hanes, the name being “Curley Corner.” The great model, Barbara Hunter, advertises “Kimel’s Kennel Dog Food.” Carolyn has a good grade of dog food, ground es¬ pecially to fit the dog’s cavaties. We notice a local photographer is taking pic¬ tures, and it’s none other than our own Sam Easley, now working at Station JKDM. Jim Knight and Dean Matlock recently opened another TV station. One of the main programs is the soap box opera, “Married Life at 45,” with stars Peggy Todd and Wilson Wise. Speaking of married life, Betty Scott and Betty Reed are (outside of married life) playing ball for Hillcrest Golf Course and recently played on the USS Navy Ship Macon. Joyce Church and Betty Hayes just made two of their daring flights across the continent in only two hours, eight minutes, and four seconds. Their first words afterwards were, “We’ll have another Big Orange.” Ann Williamson just completed her second book, “Lonesome at Forty-Five,” her first book being “How Not To Get a Diamond for Christmas.” Frank Beckner and Dean Flora are busy these days with life in the Alps. Their home is in Innsbruck, Austria, where they own a skiing school, but they too, have come for the circus. Professor Jay Caudle, now nurse-maid to Einstein, has just discovered an atomic weapon that dimin¬ ishes space. Everyone has been talking about the ingenious Professor Caudle. Ruth Stone is now art Director for Atomic Magazine, and enjoys her job very much, I hear. And, of all things I heard she has been working for the last few months with the Navy as a Frogman! Shirley Smith now owns a string of grocery stores throughout the Carolinas; Smith’s Self-Service has really progressed. Well, here we all are; each with his own occu¬ pation behind him, and enjoying himself immen¬ sely, but, on with the circus! ANN WILLIAMSON PATSY HENDRIX Prophets 44 45 CLASS DAY OFFICERS FIRST ROW: Betty Scott, Barbara Hunter. SECOND ROW: Patsy Hendrix, Ruth Stone, Jackie Matlock, Diane Sheek, Nancy Moody, Ann Williamson. THIRD ROW: Joe Bullins, Sam Easley, Jerry Peoples, William Creasy. FAREWELL THANKS Thanks to you, dear School Books, For providing what we know. We know that because of you Our knowledge in the future will grow. Thanks to you, dear Teachers; Your patience had no end. Our sweet memories of you Will come as often as the wind. Thanks to you, dear Principal, For your guidance each day. We know that our path of life Will lead in the right way. Thanks to you, dear Classmates; We sincerely love you all. Please honor and take care of our school— Each room and each hall. JACKIE MATLOCK Once in a while, We’ll be thinking of yesterday’s memories, Longing once more to be Again with you. We give our thanks To our teachers Whose interest and deep concern Have inspired us to learn What’s best for us all. So facing the future with courage, We embark on life’s stormy sea; We’re certain of what fate may bring us, Assured of victory. With grief in our hearts And a tear of regret falling from our eyes, Classmates of Clemmons High, We bid our farewell. FAREWELL!
