SUPERLATIVES SUPERLATIVES JANE COOK BILLY WOOSLEY Most Likely to Succeed OLIVER WOODFORD DORIS McCALL Friendliest SUPERLATIVES SUPERLATIVES SUPERLATIVES SUPERLATIVES SUPERLATIVES SUPERLATIVES CLASS HISTORY Many were the little tots who trembling with shyness and anticipation, entered school in September, 1940. We were soon made fully at ease and happy by the smiling faces of Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Watkins and we sincerely thank them for giving us such a wonderful year. The members of our first grade were: David Allen, Dorothy Boles, Jane Brewer, Joe Butcher, Lendon Canter, Earl Church, Jane Cook, Bobby Cornwell, Emma Davis, Willa Jean Davis, Jake Douthit, Jimmy Draugh, Dewitt Falls, Dean Flora, Nancy Fry, Norma Lee Frye, Lavinia Griffith, Spencer Griffith, Dora Harper, Bette Higgins, Corbit Hodges, Jr., Joe Holder, Bobby Howard, Travis Howard, Buddy Jones, Jerry Koontz, Jimmy Martin, Gray Beckner, Joe Bullins, Columbus Case, Clyde Hendrix, Albert Matthews, Billy Myers, Jo Ann Nelson, Harley Pennington, Mae Phelps, Ina Ratz, Peggy Rights, Wayne Ryan, Mabel Satterfield, Tommy Sheets, Peggy Shore, Gray Smith, Margie Smith, Marvin Spaugh, Dolores Sprinkle, Virgina Stewart, Donald Teague, Herbert Tesh, Edna Whisenhunt, Wilson Wise, Oliver Woodford, Billy Woosley, Loyd Wrights. We had many problems and adjustments to make, as well as much to learn during our elementary school days. Our teachers during this period were: second grade; Mrs. Gray Wall and Miss Julia Idol, third grade; Miss Anna Lena Cooper and Mrs. Kermit Essex, fourth grade; Miss Anna Lena Cooper and Mrs. Linnie Potts, fifth grade; Mrs. Linnie Potts and Mrs. David Bassett, sixth grade; Mrs. George Moody and Miss Lois Coble, seventh grade; Mrs. George Moody and Mr. Henry Hall. We began to realize maturity as we entered the eighth grade in ' 47 with Miss Edoth Noble and Mrs. L. O. Crotts teaching us. It was that year that romances began to bud, we had our first class parties, we played basketball, and we went to chapel with the high school. During our first eight years we lost many classmates and gained many who we are proud to have graduating with us. Though we have lost contact with some, we still remember them as friends of ours. The ninth grade, our first in high school, was one we shall never forget, Mrs. Lester Burner and Miss Ora McHan were our homeroom teachers. Each homeroom had its own class officers and student council representative. Our classmates during this year were: Bobby Barney, Earnest Bullard, Joe Butcher, Lonnie Clinard, Roy Lee Cornatzer, Ted Dyson, Billy Faircloth, Frank Foster, Thomas Gabard, Roger Green, Worth Griffith, Leroy Harpe, Bobby Hauser, Howard Hickman, Buddy Jones, Bobby Lane, Bill Long, Richard Milstrupe, Richard Sheets, Elvin Shoaf, Billy Sides, Johnny Sloan, Franklin Smith, Gray Smith, Jimmy Stewart, Donald Williams, Edgar Wood, Oliver Woodford, Billy Woosley, Jean Bodford, Oneita Carter, Audrey Church, Barbara Cline, Ola Cockerham, Jane Cook, Barbara Crater, Willa Jean Davis, Peggy Foster, Norma Lee Frye, Lavinia Griffith, Fay Hayes, Nancy Howard, Bette Higgins, Mary Nell James, Jean Pike, Marilyn Johnson, Doris McCall, Jo Ann Nelson. Mae Phelps, Nancy Quinn, Peggy Rights, Mittie Sue Sheets, Alma Shumate, Margie Smith, Faye Spaugh, Dolores Sprinkle, Doris Stone, Doris Sweat, Bette Todd and Wilma Todd. Earnest Bullard, Ted Dyson, Franklin Smith, Frank Foster, Bobby Hauser, Faye Hayes, Doris Sweat, Sara Brendle, and Barbara Ann Cline left us that year. As we entered the 10th grade we really felt we were each a part of the high school, no longer groping our way around but this year helping the freshmen. Our class officers were: President, Jean Bodford, Vice President, Donald Williams, Secretary, Margie Smith, Treasurer, Bobby Barney. Miss Francis Cook and Mr. George Moody were our homeroom teachers. Our greatest fun came when we went to Chapel Hill for a day on the activity bus, with Mr. Moody chaperoning. We welcomed Marcella Byrd and Max Kimel into our class. Marilyn Johnson and Willa Jean Davis left to attend Reynolds High School. Leroy Harpe, Bobby Barney, Gray Smith, Audrey Church and Alma Shumate did not return the following year. Ah! At last we were juniors and during this year we would entertain the Seniors at a banquet. We hold many fond memories of this occasion held at the YWCA in Winston-Salem at which our theme was, The Gay Nineties.’’ In November we gave a play, Mumbo Jumbo’’ directed by Mr. Moody. Our marshalls were: Peggy Rights, Wilma Todd, Jean Bodford, Howard Hickman, Jimmy Stewart, and Bill Long. We were happy to have Bill Long elected to serve as President of the Student Council during our senior year, and Jimmy Stewart as Vice President. Ourclass officers were: President, Bill Long, Vice President, Peggy Rights, Secre¬ tary, Worth Griffith, and Treasurer, Oliver Woodford. Our homeroom teachers were Mr. George Moody, and Miss Frances Cook who we wish to thank for making the year a most pleasant one. Ola Cockerman and Roy Lee Cornatzer left school during this year. And now we approach the end for which we have striven for many years. We have had many intriguing experiences come out of our various efforts. Our senior oficers were: President, Bill Long, Vice President, Marcella Byrd, Secretary, Jane Cook, Assistant Secretary, Norma Lee Frye, and Treasurer, Oliver Woodford. Evelyn Moretz and Annabelle Dentiste entered school, to graduate with us in the spring. With the closing months of school came the Junior-Senior Banquet, our Senior play and last, graduation. As we reach our anxiously awaited goal, we realize that we have not done this alone, but by the help of our principal, teachers and classmates. There are no words with which to express our gratitude to you, so we only say, thank you. We have sought the best, and we feel we have obtained it, for our school days have been one of the richest experiencs of our lives; and so we leave, cherishing the fondest memories of Clemmons School. JANE COOK HOWARD HICKMAN MARSHALS Peggy Dunn, Leslie Frye, Jo Ann Essex, Lowell Carter, Jewel Foster, Jack Cumby. MASCOTS CYNTHIA LEAGINS MICHAEL JONES CLASS SONG Time is passing on, our school day joys will soon be gone; We’ve had the pleasures of all the treasures, our hearts could ere entwine. Then with the strength of you, we’ll meet the world with hope and truth and to all our teachers, we leave our features that always appear in truth. Clemmons School day time, Farewell our Clemmons School day time. Each happy minute had blessing in it, Dear Clemmons School day time. As on life’s glad road we shall the hills of victory climb, God’s grace we ll sing and the fruits we’ll bring of our dear ole school in rhyme. DORIS McCALL WILMA TODD FAREWELL TO SCHOOL DAYS The time for parting too soon is here; For friends and classmates we shed a tear. Tho ' Clemmons High you cannot transcend, All good things some time must end. What the future holds we can better endure For training, we had teachers, steadfast and sure. With heavy hearts we go back in time, To joyful days and memories sublime. In the winds of life, we now test our wings, With courage, We’ll meet, the storms life brings. What ere we gain, success of fame, We owe to you who steadied our aim. To you, Clemmons High, we now bid farewell, Within our hearts, sweet memories of you will dwell. Seated : Nancy Quinn, Jane Cook, Norma Lee Frye, Peggy Rights, Wilma Todd Doris Sprinkle, Marcella Byrd, Doris McCall. Standing-. Howard Hickman, Oliver Woodford Donald Williams, Buddy Jones. KIDS DAY CLASS PROPHECY As we shut the door of our rocket and started over the earth with soaring vigor toward the moon, we passed over the various places where we spent our young days doing Readin’, Ritin’, and Rithmetic, we see our dear little teacher, Miss Cook, with graying hair, still teaching away. We wonder if we were partly to blame? While passing over New York, we see Bette Higgins modeling expensive dresses. We see Lieutenant Tommy Gabard in a very modern office. Sitting beside him with a shorthand pad on her knee is Jean Bodford. Clemmons is well represented at Carolina now. Peggy Foster is chief cheerleader for our great football heroes Joe Butcher and Howard Hickman, who are still the top stars. Nancy Quinn and Evelyn Moretz are settled down to raising cattle. They each have a farm of their own. We see Margie Smith is still with Hanes Hosiery. She’s the star center; in the cheering section we see two little Margies all eyes watching. Elvin Shoaf is a star center also. With his height they say he can just place ’em in.” Dolores Sprinkle has become a great author. Her top seller, How To Be Beautiful”, gives some very helpful hints. Her other is, Scales Don’t Talk.” Our celebrity, Annabeile Dentiste, is now on television. She’s another Tallulah Bankhead so we hear. Mae Phelps and Worth Griffith are working with comedian Red Skelton. Don’t you think they make a nice team? Joan Nelson is majoring in Home Economics, to be the new teacher at Clemmons. Along with her is Billy Woosley. He just can’t get away from those English memories. Buzzy Woodford is running for Mayor of Winston-Salem—Fay Spaugh, his cam¬ paign manager, is confident of his victory. The Y. M. D. (Young Mother’s Organization) is now headed by Doris Sprinkle. They have accomplished a great deal with Barbara Overby and Oneita Cranford, as the other officers. Mary Nell James is making a great hit in her Clemmons Beauty Parlor. With her famous permanent waves, the ladies all look very nice. The Jones Auto Lot, with Buddy Lewis Jones proprietor, is getting off to a grand start. His most recent deal was an A-Model Ford for $75. Bobby Lane has a fine position. He’s Eddy Arnold’s ballad singer. SENSATIONAL!!! That’s Jimmy Stewart and Bette Todd we’re speaking of. They’re the new romantic team in Hollywood. With the Eat Rite,” Bill Long and the former Peggy Rights are making their million. It’s the kids’ hangout and by the way they serve the best food around. We are very proud of our nurses, too. Jean Pike and Wilma Todd will be glad to nurse you back to health just anytime. Richard Sheets is the manager of our largest clothing store. Norma Lee Frye has the Burden of keeping his books straight. If you’re ever having car trouble just drop by Kimel’s Service Station. He is the best mechanic around besides being an expert wind-shield cleaner. He’s even invented a new gas that’s Powerful, Plentiful, and always good to the last drop.” Donald Williams is the leader of a new jazz band. Marcella Byrd is the vocalist and Jane Cook the pianist. They’re open every night from eight ’til twelve, so drop around for the best entertainment in town. Doris McCall is the manager of a large advertising firm. With her excellent art ability you can well understand how she attained her high position. Last, but not least, we see Roger Green living in luxury. His homemade furniture proved to be very profitable so he set up a factory and does his own designing. Now our rocket is flying back home so we shall see you soon on Earth.
