T . TbOJI Another year has become history. It's unbelievable! Remember that first pep rally? What a joke! We all acted so foolish, but for one moment we had a feeling, a feeling that made it worth it all. The first football game, we wanted to win so badly hut we lost, and again that certain feeling united us for one short second. And what about Homecom- ing? The mums, the excitement of the game, the queen, the pretty girls, and the pretty guys, what a time we had! Remem- ber all of the free times and the not-so-fun times, the get- ting away with it or the getting tagged? Was it worth it all? And studying for those exams, cramming on that last night. How we all felt. Remember? Oh! And lunch, that does get to everyone. Especially during the period before. We all get a pit-kind of feel- ing just from simply hunger. What about your first date with that wild and crazy fox or the first time you fell in love? Will you ever find anyone to replace that special someone? And knowing that you won't again creates that feeling. Graduation, what can we say? It's all so mushy! But still through it — through the proudness, the jokes, and the laugh- ter, and even the tears, a feeling prevails. What feeling? What is this totally indescribable feeling? Can it be called: The Sting? 2 3 The °f Remembering Reliving, But — Only in Your Mind, and on the Pages of This Book. . . Jr. Lori Salmons and Soph. Butch Rogers find time for conversation during the break. The Dating Game Dating was the most popular extra-curricular activity at CHS. There were many things to do on a date in Cleburne. Many couples chose to observe the submarine races at the local lake held from dusk to dawn. If submarines did not suit their fancy, they went to one of the nearby drive-ins such as the Chief or at Alvarado. Many CHS students hung out at chic Fort Worth discos such as the Speak Easy, Spencer’s Palace, or at the “Corner.” If they could not beat their feet to the disco boogie, they would try shuffling to the Bull-Shift” boogie at the Chip-in or at the local dances held at C.H.S. One thing every teenager did, no matter where they were going or where they had been was to cruise the Park. Senior Day Prom Night It seems so glamorous and glit- tering when you are a junior thinking of your senior year. Then those years are here and it’s the prom, then the Senior Break- fast and Graduation. The feeling of being glamorous is gone and has been replaced with a feeling of uncertainty. For the girls, those unwanted tears seem to come so easy. Then everyone stands to sing the school song and it’s “The Sting” all over. Right: Prom night Donna Smith and Greg Eam- hart dance to the music of “Chateau”. Below: David Miller fumbles for his name cards to make some last minute trades at the Senior Break- fast. Charles Cliff ton just cannot understand how women keep their panty hose up. The ones he wore to the Junior Senior prom a few years back nearly fell off. Jeff Cody our basketball coach at C.H.S. was tagged red handed with a certain magazine in his briefcase, by a number of his fellow teach- ers and students. Mr. Gutierrez got quite a response from his Biology class when he told them to make a study of the honey- bees legs. Mr. McRuiz tells us that he was most embarrassed the time he bent over to pick up a piece of chalk and split his pants from front to back in front of an entire class. Academics 27 M. Academics 29 30 Shakespeare More A necessity in an English class is a dic- tionary as Marvin Hamilton keeps in his desk. Seeming to study hard in Mrs. Knight’s Jr. English class, Mike Townsend slowly gets away with looking at magazines. English Some students may think of C.H.S. English class as a world of preposi- tions, and diagramming but others could think of it as a perfectly good sleep if you’re in Mrs. Knight’s class, or if you’re not the sleepy type you may like to endure a little of Mrs. Clark’s hollering. Also acquainted with a little bit of C.H.S. English class would be the question of what is Mrs. Miles really talking about. But I guess the thing that really brings the thought of Eng- lish to Cleburne High would be the highly intel- lectual Bear’s class (Gregg Earnhart). Twas The Night Before Renaissance? wonders Kim Hundley, Wyvette Poe, Tena Gibbs, Billie Sims, Mark Watson, Mike Mackey, Tim Timmons, Petey Marshall and Calvin Montgomery. Although Sr. English under Mrs. Den- ning can be rather hectic, students suf- fer through McBeth knowing that what they are learning will be of use to them later. Academics Frogs in Action Poly Brown gets some private studying done in the hall. Jackie Gattis really shows her interest in chemicals in Mr. Cotton’s class. Science Science is a very inter- esting subject. Mainly we study frogs and animals in biology and various chemi- cals and formulas in chem- istry. But at our high school it is a sort of wonaer why the head chemistry teacher can also hold the record of most dententions ever given by one person. Or how Coach Kelm can expect one person to know all those abbreviations for different minerals, (by Greg Earnhart.) Mr. Cotton takes a minute of his class period to pose for the camera. Elizabeth Lee has really strapped on her apron for chemistry class. Washington to Sewell The man with his hands in the air, Todd McFarland, gives a big hoorah! for World History. Rene White appears to enjoy the class, too, just look at that smile. Jeanne Tribble learns about democracy in her government class. Therefore, she patriotically shows her “peace” sign. 32 Academics Pie R n As you can see, Rachelle Hewlette (cen- ter) enjoys her world history class — others just are not with it. Roots and Squares History is a terrific subject because it goes back such a long way. And math to many students is the devasting world of lines, shapes, and numbers that count into infinity. (Gregg Earnhart) Tommy Garber, Holly Grahm, and John Coulter find out how difficult calculus can be as they try to do a quadratic equation. Math monster William Ward frantically rips apart his geometry notebook in Nancy D’Angelo’s class. Academics 33 Taking Care of Business Typing — your fingers ache and you have messed up no telling how many times. And Mrs. Wheatley is starting to give you dirty looks so you wonder if it’s really worth it, but then Mrs. McAfee will tell you how well your doing and it starts to go all right until the next time you come to typing class. Then the typing adventures start all over again, (by Gregg Earnhart) Top Right: These kids get into the Gen- eral business scene and enjoy it. Top Left: Tracey Berg and Gail McClain practice for the future in their account- ing class. These two greasy dudes. James Reynold and Harold Laird learn about the finer parts of their cars in Automechanics. 34 Academics V Drafting means more than just going into the army! In Mr. Garrett’s class one can find David Byle, Bruce Moen, Tim Dill, Sylvester Ray and Richard Carter are more than eagerly waiting to learn. Eyes on your copy . . . Begin! That means you Angie Burgess, Melisa Anderson, Sharon Looper, Jason Barber, Joleta Robinson, and Alan Adrews! Academics 35 Body and Home Building These energetic freshmen look rather ragged out in their Health Class. Among these Freshmen are Mike Waits, Steve Cambell, Kerry Benson, Monty Mont- gomery, Gary Anderson, and Pam Sex- ton. No she is not dead just a dummy Jeff Baker, (left) and Tammy Dooley revive for Health Class. Gary Hicks adds a touch of gourmet to his cooking. 36 Academics After studying Com- mercial Clothing Industries, DeAnn Comer begins sewing a new wardrobe. Steve Lee makes his original apron, as Bake Leonard checks out the cabinets in Mrs. Hazle- wood’s Homemaking Class. Academics 37 The Finer Things io Life Are Free Here are eight of C.H.S. finest actresses and actors who enjoy performing for their school. They are Lewis Worthington, Bill Ladwig, Pam Tyner, Rick Brady, Cheryl Hammond, Sandra Roye, Maureen Smith, and Susan Rathgeber. Journalism: Photography Annual Yapper Keith Fox — photo” poses for his buddy, the camera, as he snaps a shot of himself. Drama Our zany drama department has really come alive under the eoaching of Dan Duke. The tal- ent has really shown through with the smash hit productions, “The Midnight Ghost,” “Arsenic and Old Lace” and “The Wizard of Oz.” Here our future actors pose for one of many photo- graphs they have blessed their devoted audiences with. Ronnie Grimm speaks no evil” as Edi- tor of “The Yapper.” 38 Academics Not only does the Spanish class learn about the culture and language of Mex- ico — they get to sample some of the Mexican pastries and pies. Left to Right: Melinda Hughes, Mr. McRuiz, Casey Jones, Sylvia Moralaez, and Leslie McLain. Foreign Languages The Clava Caput •(club heads) of Latin Class enjoy the bizzare teachings of Benny-0; but have completely lost all sense of reason after learning over 300 verb forms! The Jackets led in the first and second quarters behind the passing of Spike Owen to Chris Fleck. The Rams came back in the second half to win the game 28-14. The Jackets traveled to Gainesville to go against the state ranked Panthers. The Jackets again showed the good first half to pull ahead of the Panthers 3-0. But much to the Jack- ets surprise the Panthers battled back to defeat the Jackets 28-3 with a great second half. The Jackets still looking for a victory went to play against Corsicana. The offense of Cleburne ran at will against the Tigers. They piled up well over 300 yds, and produced two touchdowns. The Jackets upped their record to 1-2. The Jackets Homecoming game was against the Elks of Burleson. It was a sweet Homecoming for the Cleburne High football Exes as they sat and watched the Jackets of today roll over the Elks in the 78 Homecoming game. The Jackets built up a early lead and never let go. Led by senior runningback Tony Holbert, the Jackets running game never looked better. The Jackets scored first and last in the game as the score would indicate, 33-6. This game ended up to be one of the best Cleburne would play all year. The Jackets faced the Marlin Bulldogs hoping for another win to up their record to 3-2. The 16th ranked team from Marlin and South Zone champs put up a good fight for the Jackets. The Jackets proved to be the better team in a 14 to 7 victory. The Lions of Brownwood ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Brownwood ran up the score to 14-0 to end the half. Cleburne piled up much yardage against the soon to be state champs. Cleburne could not catch up to the Lions and lost 31-14. Top: Mineral Wells finds the Jackets defense tough. Quarterback Spike Owen was the key to the early lead. Owen hit Fleck with a TD pass for a 12-0 lead and then scored himself on a 23 yd run. The game ended with a 33-8 score. Cleburne was held to a 14-6 lead at Crow- ley at the end of the first quarter and a 14- 14 tie at the half. At the beginning of the fourth qtr. the Jackets made it 21-14. But then Crowley managed to score two more touchdowns to come back and win. Stephenville sent the Jackets their sec- ond straight loss. Although tennis, track, and bas- ketball are enjoyed by both sexes, volleyball is a sport exclu- sively for girls. Friendships among the team- mates have developed over the past year. The wins and losses have brought the girls closer together as FRIENDS, not only as fellow athletes. Improvement is the best word to describe this years volleyball teams. The varsity Stingers dis- played both skill and technique in every game they played. Although their record was not perfect, it has shown that the girls are getting better each year. Unfortunately, the bleach- ers remained virtually empty throughout most of the season. 76 Girls Sports Becky Bowen and Laura Estes block a shot. In only their second year of UIL competi- tion they found themselves competing with four of the top ten teams in Texas. It is unu- sual for one team in a district to be ranked in the top ten in the state let alone four. Illness, injuries, inexperience, and stiff competition proved to overpower the Sting- ers in 1979. The girls showed improvement with every game tney played and they gained valuable experience that will be a great stepping stone in 1980. With only one senior graduat- ing the Stingers are eagerly anticipating a highly competitive year in 1980. Tanya Rolla a member of the second team All District North Zone reaches for the ball. Fish Look Ahead Laura Estes hurried the Girl’s Basket- ball team out the door to a Spirit party given by volleyball. Enthusiasm Never Stops The 1978-79 season was very rewarding for both the Junior Varsity and the Freshman Stingers bas- ketball teams. The real accomplishments of these teams are not so evident from their win-loss record but rather from the aspects of team goals; teamwork and the devel- opment of basic skills. Tnese skills, coupled with the experience or working with a team towards a common goal, should prove to be very valuable to the Varsity Stingers of 1980. The coach of the 1978-79 J.V. and Freshman Sting- ers was C. L. Evers. This is Coach Evers’ first year as coach of the girls teams. He did a fine job of coach- ing this year although the teams were plagued by injuries and illnesses at some very crucial moments. Coach Evers remarked that he was very proud to be associated with this group of fine ladies and he wishes each one of them the best of luck in the next coming season. With “Close Encounters of the Cleburne Kind” being the theme, much thought and brainwork went behind the football spirit with fireworks exploding at the bonfire and the victory of Cleburne 34-6 against Burleson. Before the game, football players were surprised with “goodies” of all sorts hidden in their lockers. Another surprise came for them when they went home only to find their houses and cars decorated with signs and paper. The excitement and anticipation still remained after the game as many couples went to the dance or to some romantic and expensive restaurant out of town. Homecoming ’78 will be long remembered in years to come. Just thinking of all the fun times makes one wonder how anyone could ever forget it. Band 191 ' lWWWW jjiwdi . i i PRESIDENT Greg Logan VICE PRESIDENT SEC.-TREAS Ronnie Grimm The dust is whispering from my shelves, And time’s dwarfed arm does rest on twelve, But never I hear, never I see; I’m lost in this treasured book’s memories. The house system, too, was nevermore. Open campus went, and there were scores Of people left who never knew, For us, the game was done, adieu. When last the rain came down this way 'Twas almost graduation day. And now those days come back through time, Past cobwebs in the back of my mind. We were the class of ’79, Playing games with youth and time, But never more, the game is done, And no one knows who lost or won. Do memories mingle with the rain I must remember that never again Could 1 laugh the way I did When lost in Ft. Worth with my friends. Oh, we beat the system well! At least w'e tried, but the time does tell. A blue, blue day earned one hundred ways To lie your way to the lake for a day. To us alone, traditions dear Were put to rest in many a tear. We were the last to honor these things, But they vanished like moonlight along with our dreams. A noble building, old and proud Tremble as we screamed our vow To always be the number one — But who really knows who lost or won? Through Senior English, Rings, and jobs, Country dances, roses and proms, Apple wine, and that very fast game, If we didn’t win, then who was to blame? Days that were so few have fled. Our soap-bubbles, dreams, and grades are dead. And while we partied, nobody knew That the game would soon be over, ADIEU. Picture (a) — Tommy Wylie is so glad his section is almost finished. Tommy always smiled when the end was near. Picture (b) — Greg Earnhart is a very creative per- son. He always acted out his copy captions for pictures. Here he is seen imitating an after-lunch caption. Picture (c) — The expression on Kim Woodard’s face shows her fatigue as the last deadline draws near. Picture (d) — Dave Burrow ponders what kind of art work to draw. 276 Staff How in the world can a group of high school students, a train, and a yellow jacket be combined in a yearbook? That was the question this staff had at hand. Our theme, “The Sting” combined all those things. The train, which represents the Santa Fe Trail, was a part of the movie “The Sting”, which is a part of a yellow jacket, and “The Sting” is also a feeling that a CHS student may experience. The artwork shows the use of our theme. Our book would not be a success if it weren’t for the artistic abilities of Dave Burrow. Dave designed the cover, endsheets, and division pages. But we all know a yearbook is not a yearbook without pictures. Mike Waits, head photographer and Keith Fox were responsible for the pictures. Special thanks to Jim West, a local photographer, for his contribution of color photography in the honors section. David Dixon, repre- sentative of Taylor Publishing Co., was a great help. He saw that our yearbook was hand-carried through the plant. There are a few members of the staff who worked extra hard to meet deadlines. Greg Barnhart worked and worked fitting copy, but more important — writing it. His humorous statements “liven up” pictures. Tommy Wylie and Mark White did a fantastic job on sports. Full coverage on every game is a hard job. They took this job as a challenge and accomplished this task with success. Kim Woodard had one of the most nerve-wracking sections — Classes. With patience she overcame the tradgedy of lost pictures. David Farmer helped me more than anyone. He never complained about the long hours and was always willing to help. For that, David deserves an extra-special thanks. Without Clara Frost, journalism sponsor, the annual would have never been completed. Her patience and helpfulness made the annual what it is. I want to thank all the staff members for making this annual a success. The yearbook is now finished. I hope it will bring back cherished memories and remind you of the 1978-1979 school year.
