It is the intention of the staff to reiterate on the activities of this little fellow by presenting you, the student body, with the 1960 SANTA FE TRAIL. Not only is he a favorite to the students and faculty of Cleburne High School, but he also is very well-known to the community of Cleburne. Most people do not realize the many things our YELLOW JACKET stands for. Just as each student represents Cleburne High, the YELLOW JACKET, with his colorful black and gold body, is a symbol of our school and the many things associated with it. During the fall term, we saw the YELLOW JACKET fighting for the black and gold on the football field. Fearlessly and fairly he gained honor and recognition for our school and community. He brought a title to Cleburne High that showed just how hard he did fight--- State AAA Co-Champs, 1959. The many supporters of our little friend surely had some of his spirit as they traveled to the ends of Texas to see him perform. The YELLOW JACKET represents these people and the interest they have in Cleburne High. Basketball, baseball, and track also have the YELLOW JACKET as their symbol. He has a big load to carry but does it brilliantly in all fields. As we recall the things the YELLOW JACKET symbolizes, we cannot forget our friends who have loyally supported him, as exemplified by Miss Allene Gray, Mr. Brooks Conover, and others who will remain a part of the spirit of the YELLOW JACKET. So now we have a clear picture of our smiling friend. Because we feelhe is truly deserving, as an honorable representative and symbol of Cleburne High School, we dedicate the 1960 Santa Fe Trail to THE SPIRIT OF THE YELLOW JACKET U ik 4:'f .Nl 'lQf'., F ',.' sir ,eg wr jf .,s .,f' 4 'f ' 2 ' Q I I ' ' f ' : Y lb i W sg U V if r 1 1: Q is V 'E . I sincerely wish for a happy and successful life for each teacher and student in our school. The surest formula for such a life seems to be found in service to others--the service given should always exceed the pay received. 6 wise Everyone in Cleburne High knows the Assistant Superinten- dent, Mr. Glendon Broumley. His warm smile and friendly ways make him a favorite to all. Purchasing for the school and arranging transportation for the entire school system are two of his chief duties. Mr. Broumley attended North Texas State College in Denton, Texas, where he received his B. S. degree in physical educa- tion and his M. S. degree in administrative education. Q6 urn, .. Among her many jobs are those of giving and interpreting aptitude and I. Q. tests to students. She plans special guidance programs. Many students counsel with her on their social or emotional problems and their future plans. Miss Hall received her B. S. Degree in Journalism from Texas Women's University, and a Masters of Education in Guidance from Texas Christian Univer- sity. Miss Hall leaves the Cleburne School System this year to become Consultant in Guidance Services for the Texas Education Agency. The many students of Cleburne High School, the faculty and administration will truly miss her and her wonderful work with us. Another new face among the Cleburne Public School System staff is Miss Ruth Merrill, elementary choral music teacher. Miss Merrill spends an allotted time at each of the elementary schools teaching chorus to the students in the various grades. Miss Merrill received her degree in music from the San Marcos State College. She taught chorus at Cle- burne High School in 1951. Before beginning her work in the elementary schools. Miss Merrill worked lil the County Superintendent's office, and was active with the Baptist youth of Cleburne. These are confidence and optimism. Be- cause we cannot foresee the future, we must be optimists and expect the best. Only then canwe justify our existence for the present. As an optimist, we not only can see an opportunity, but we can make the most of it. Democracy is only equality of opportunity, not equality itself. Per- haps the best democracy can ever do is to give every Caruso a chance to sing. Success should await ifwe do not allow some disappoint- ment to make us lose hope and never try again. While we do not know what the future holds, we can at least retain our spirit of confidence and optimism. The future is in the hands of God and only He can give us the answer. dew Serving as Assistant Principal, housemaster of Edison, and instruc- tor in bookkeeping, Mr. Cecil Harper fills these positions in Cleburne High School with accuracy and efficiency. Miss Gene Anne Wheeler, secre tary to the principal, takes care of the routine duties of the office. She has served in this position capably and efficiently for four years. MR. David McWilliams had no idea that he would make All-State as a center when he gave an inspiring pep talk at one of the pep rallies. Linda Bailey Kenneth Howard Annrlghnson. . .Taifries Graham Probably every high school student has dreamed of being principal for a day. And the dream comes true for Pamela Jones when circumstances propel three students into the temporary roles of principal, vice-principal, and school sec- retary at Ames High School. It all begins because Principal Lundquist just has to be away to speak at the State Principals' convention. Miss Dill, schoolsecretary, hasaterrible cold and insists on going home for the day. The vice-principal, Mr. Obermayer is con- fined to bed with a high fever. Then it is that pompous Mr. Ames, school board president, steps in and decrees that the student council officers shall take over the running of the school for the day. A Pamela--as acting-principal--gets off toabad start when, in trying to buzz for the janitor, she rings the fire alarm bell instead. Then she has to decide whether to stand behind an unpopular teacher and whether to keep the school's star athlete out of the State Basketball Tournament. Not the least of Pam's worries is good-natured Buzz Bailey, acting vice-principal, who grandly advises a gossipy student that there is to be no more homework! Then rhere's a would-be student, Faversham Lightly, Jr. , who would rather sleep than eat--and spends most of his time doing one or the other. To add to Pam's many problems, the home ec teacher is lateg and Shalimar Ames, Pamela's detested rival, turns on her honeyed charm to lure the reluctant Buzz into taking over the class--with some truly astonishingresults. And finally, with the schoolplay, Rusty Wings, scheduled to open this very night, the acting- principal loses the key to the trunkful of costumes. However, the many complications are convincingly resolved before the final curtain, Shalimar's efforts to implicate Pam in the robbery of the play-ticket money are exposed, much to the dismay of Shalimar's pompous father. Rusty Wings --takes a surprising flight of success. And even the audience finds itself playing a part i roceedings. After four plays they punted dead on the Cleburne 44. Cleburne was unable to move the ball and they too were forced to punt. After a 29 yard gain and a 41 yard gain, the Bucks were on the one yard line. Breckenridge realized the strength of their foe because the Jackets held for downs on two plays and then took over the ball. Jimmy Parker booted the ball out of his end zone but Brecken- ridge returned to the 9. Gibson went over for another touchdown but Parks strapped him on the line of scrimmage in his try for the 2 point conversion. The Bucks were leading the Jackets 14-O. McCall returned the kick-off to his 30. Doerr hit Stephen Lee on the first play with a perfect pass on the 50. Lee ran to the Breckenridge 42. Doerr fired to Evans and the halfback snagged the ball, twisted out of the arms of a Breckenridge defender and angled for the flag. Big Stephen Lee blocked another Breckenridge defender and Cohen cut another almost in half at about the 20 as Evans sailed in with Cleburne's first score of the game. The conversion was no good and the score was in Breckenridge's favor, 14-6. After the kick-off Breckenridge was forced to punt. Doerr fired 21 yards to Lee for afirst down on the Breckenridge 4. There was only enough time tor one play before the halt. Doerr faded back to pass, found no receivers and scooted across the goal to score. The conversion was missed and the score at the half was Breckenridge 14, Cleburne 12. The Jackets did something that has not been done to a Breckenridge team in history. . .controlled the ball for 9 minutes and 45 seconds while running 19 plays. Breckenridge finally got possession of the ball late in the third quarter ended with the score Breckenridge 14, Cleburne 12. Beginning the fourth quarter, the two teams were really giving it allthey had. After exchanging the ball a few times, Breckenridge made its drive toward the goal. After advancing to the 2 yard line, the Bucks scored. They missed the conversion and the score stood 20-12 with 6 minutes and 50 seconds left to play. After the kick-off, the Jackets began their magnificent drive for atouchdown. Late in the third quarter, Dderr faded to pass and the Breckenridge defenders dropped back. Doerr whizzed toward daylight between tackle and end on the left side and went over the goal standing up. The clock showed 52 seconds left. Doerr saw the same patch of daylight on his conversion and burst in to rack up 2 points and tie the game at 20-all. After the kick-off, Breckenridge took over on the Cleburne 40. Doerr intercepted the ball on his own 39 and fought his way to the 50 yard line. Trying for an all out win, Doerr threw a long pass intended for Lee. The pass was inter- cepted and the game was over as Breckenridge raced with the ball back down field. 168 -1 -T , ,jr , V. . Buck McCall makes yardage against Breckenridge. Buck contributed greatly to the Co-Champion title. Timmy Doerr prepares to complete one of his outstanding passes. Stephen Lee, David McWilliams, and Richard Ottinger are aiding in the play.
