SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE In these times there have been many questions asked about our schools. Also, there have been numerous criticisms leveled at our unique American concept of educating all those students who have the ability to learn and who are willing to absorb an ed- ucation. These questions and criticisms have influenced both teachers and students to evaluate their efforts in the light of this great experiment in mass education. Have we taken for granted the right to an education? Have we thought of education as something due all Americans as an act of achievement attained through hard work, co-operation, good citizenship, and spirit- uality? On the answer to this question depends the final outcome of each individual and of our country. May our sense of values be true. inf La ll Jack, faithfuibuddyofmr. S Since its beginning in 1922, the YAPPER has gained great recognition from the students and faculty, as well as from the merchants who advertise in it. Much time and effort has been spent to make this possible. After only a few years, the YAPPER was no longer published until Mrs. Ruth Archer was chosen to sponsor it in 1959. The YAPPER then was a page in the CLEBURNE TIMES REVIEW which the students couldget for anickel a copy. After 17 years as sponsor of the paper, Mrs. Archer turned the job over to Miss Doreen Yoder. Miss Yoder sponsored the paper during the first half of the year of 1950, and then Mr. Duff took over the job. Mrs. Mattie Lou Pyeatt worked with the paper the first half of the year, 1957, From then to the present it has been under the supervision of Mrs. Betty Donovan Knox. This game turned out with similar results as previous Jacket-Owl games. During this battle, however, Cleburne dominated the statistics with nearly twice as many first downs as the Owls and almost five times as many yards gained rushing, but these efforts failed to yield a tally, and the score became O-O. Culpepper, as in the Graham game, again was the leading yardage gainer. In the final quarter, the Jackets marched 91 yards but gave up possession of the ball on the Garland 2-foot line. For a while it looked as though the Yellow Jackets might have beaten the bite out of the Panthers, but Paschal scored a tally with only 63 seconds left in the game. This score came as a result of a Killeen fumble that was recovered by Culpepper on the Killeen 6-yard line. Cohen, Culpepper, and Elrod combined their abilities to sneak the 6 points from Killeen. Killeen was stopped again as a result of a fumble. Before the fumble, Killeen seemed sure to score. Turning in fine offensive performances for Cleburne were Cohen, Elrod, Shouse, McCall, Brand, Morrison, and Archer, Defensive standouts were Knott, Copeland, Parks, McWilliams, and Doerr. Billy Cohen seems to be trapped as he makes a sweep around the left side and picks up yard- age which helped Cle- burne stop Killeen. Ap- proaching Cohen is Rex Higgins. A team managers, Kenny Kret- zschmat, Curtis Vick, and Barry jackson, all did a finejob clean- ing up after the storm for the Yellow Jackets. The Cleburne Yellow Jackets passed and ran their way to their district championship by defeating the Waco University Trojans by a score of 2.0-O. The locals scored two of their three touchdowns on aerials from Don Elrod to Lynn Morrison. One was a beautifully executed 61-yard pass play in the first quarter. Also scoring was fullback Pat Culpepper. Helping put together the necessary yardage for the tallies were Elrod, Morrison, Archer, Cohen, Culpepper, Chaney, and Shouse. These worked behind the Jacket line headed by McKinley, Knott, the Earleys, McWilliams, and Copeland. The Jacket defense did a fine job by holding the Trojans scoreless. Warren Thetford broke his left leg during this game which kept him out of the games for the rest of the season. iff l 9 On a muddy field, Billy Cohen rounds the right side for a gain against Waco U. as Paul Knott helps clear the path. This set Cleburne's district record at four wins, no losses. These four wins sent Cleburne into the bi-district game with Aldine. Cleburne's entire team held the Pirates to a standstill except for punting, which came often for the La Vegans. The score was packed up by Cohen, Elrod, Culpepper, Morrison, Evans, Shouse, and McCall. Turning in fine de- fensive performances were Knott, Lee, Wallace, and the entire Jacket defensive squad. Every player in uniform turned in a fine game performance. Rampaging fullback Pai Culpeppermaneuvers past a La Vega defender and slides into the open for a nice gain against La Vega.
