Sure the other classes hove stuff to pay for. but theirs is o free ride compared fo whof Seniors pay. It is unreal! It is really a pain in the I? to hove to save up o lot of cash from part- time jobs to pay for cops and gowns, the prom, and the Senior trip. Gas is also a big expense. Lots of gasoline tanks on Seniors' cars will hold only a couple of dollars worth of gas at a time; or however much money is in their pockets. Whof mokes if even harder is when a Senior works part-time, his parents expect him fo pay the biggest port of his own expenses. That takes away all the money he tries to spend on himself fo hove fun. Oh well, that's whof it takes to enjoy a Senior year. V-o' 2 Seniors Making time to study helps keep Steve paid a lot of money fot Heather. Steve. He touched all our hearts in so many ways, And added the spice to so many days. Those who knew him but not down deep, Thought he was quiet and seemed somewhat meek. But those who knew him inside and out, Knew he would be there for them with no doubt. This year would have been Kevin’s last year, It seems almost empty without seeing him here. He’s still in our hearts and fresh on our minds. And that will not change with the passing of time. '■g' y ys p 2, of Student Life Having fun, mixing business and pleasure, kids prepare themselves for the future while enjoying today. Where and how they have fun depends on the person. Some of us have fun playing ball, some of us get our jollies messing around in the halls. Social life is the main event for some at Clearwater. Because of the distance between friends and lack of transpor- tation, some students don't have a chance to get together with friends; therefore, they pass their leisure time here flir- ting, talking, and just visiting. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in a lack of studying and paying attention during classes. Kara Prewitt knows when to separate business and pleasure — when there’s a big language arts test coming up. Mr Pokorny can make it interesting, difficult, and entertaining all at the same time Andy Robertson and Bill Vaughn share an idea, sparked, no doubt, by the day's lecture. S 22 Student Life As usual, Julie, Deanna, Lisa, Terri, Karen, Pam, Tina, and Karen are doing what they know how to do best. Smiling at the camera! Looks like Julie is getting the ‘‘underclassmen’’ punish- ment from the one and only “Steve Ophrah Harper.” Stan is doing what we call, “getting into the swing of things.” W A Student Life 23 With only a shade of discretion, Stan Faulkner peeks at a note from one of his innocent-looking fnends: Byron Phillips. Shelley Skaggs. Gary Umfleet. Kara Prewitt, or Michelle Laxton. Playing in the shade, these mature high schoolers don't mind looking childish; Don Heffner. Lisa Page. Tina Collins, Sherrie Fulton, and Laura Stevenson. Drive and determination made the difference in David Lawson s winning in the Black River Electric Essay contest. Mr Pokorny helped David prepare for the question answer part of the contest. 24 Student Life Shades of Personality Make the Difference The events and classes may not change much from year to year, but the personalities involved make the differences that make things continually interesting. Like the changes in fashion, especially blue jeans, the changes in the student population are subtle but noticeable. Who would have thought a few years ago that the popular blue denim would be even more popular if if looked as though if had been beaten on a rock and left in the sun for weeks developing large holes? Who would think, looking at the kids wearing those threadbare jeans, that these people would have the drive and energy characteristic of Clearwater students? Surprise, they do! The annual event, sponsored by Student Council, brought a day away from class but by no means a so-called tanning session We succeeded in filling the day with many exciting and competitive events. Those games were the car push, the jello-eating contest, the balloon toss, the egg toss, class volleyball, and class tug-of-war, to name a few. When the heat got to be too much, some teachers and students escaped to the dunking booth to cool off. While students and teachers alike were being drowned, others chose to try their hand at frisbcc or volleyball. However, the faculty and student body chose to “activate,” they all enjoyed themselves while doing so. The 1987-88 officers and sponsors of STUCO thanked everyone who helped make the 1988 Activity Day a big success. 1. The Juniors beat the Seniors, but look how hard they had to strain. 2. By the time I realize what time it is. I’ve forgotten that it’s too early to be up so I jump out of bed and sort of try to get my clothes on. I don’t have time to take a shower, so I quickly run a comb through my hair, which usually results in making it worse by filling it with static electricity Well, I figure I will at least have time to eat breakfast if I hurry, but as I approach the kit- chen, I hear the familiar sound of the bus over my Mom’s complaints on something about responsibility and the like. As I storm out the door and run toward the bus. I remember all the stuff I forgot like homework, lunch money, and deodorant. Their 30-0-1 record proved just that. The Varsity team took first place in the Black River League. Clearwater Invitational, Districts and State Tour- naments. The team was conference champ in the BRL Tournament and many individual awards were presented. Coach Shaffer was named Coach of the Year. Julie Gayle, Carol Chilton and Lisa Garrison were 1st team all- conference players, Julie Daugherty and Wendy Barnes were 2nd team all-conference. Carol Chilton was also nam- ed “Player of the Year” for the second consecutive year. The Junior Varsity also had a great season. With their 17-1 record, they finished the year by taking 1st place in the BRL Tournament. IMS S' Below: Julie Gayle and Lisa Garrison made a tough wall for their opponents to overcome. A Season of Success What is the meaning of the word success? All that you would have to do is ask any member of the 1987 Varsity Volleyball team. They know what it takes to have it and you could tell it by just looking at what kind of season they had. All of this just didn’t happen from the start of practice in August to the end of the State Tournament in November. The girls have been working for four years now and not just in regular season, either. All year round they played volleyball, whether it was AAU, Jr. Olympics, going to camps, or just getting together in the summer. That's what it took,” said Coach Shaffer. The girls have built a good solid program on pride over the years. They didn’t play for their own personal glory; they all played together and work- ed as a team.” The 2-A competition was probably stronger this year than in the past, but the Lady Tigers stepped forward to show their stuff by finishing the season 30-0-1 and winning the State Tournament. As a team, they broke one record and Carol Chilton, a Senior, broke three records at State. Carol and the other starting Senior, Julie Gayle, were very valuable leaders to this team’s success. They and the other Seniors, Amy Pennington and Dana Seals, will be greatly missed. Left: Carol Chilton puts another one away while Lisa Garrison looks on. 55 The Lady Tigers basketball squad had a lot of accomplishments this year with few disappointments. They won the Black River Con- ference with a 5-0 record and also defeated Lesterville to win the Black River League Tournament. In the Ozark Foothills Conference they ended up 3-2 and finished third in the tournament. The best game that they played all year was against Fredericktown, who were ranked eighth in 3A State Poll. The Lady Tigers weren’t expected to get within twenty points of the undefeated Fredericktown team, but instead the Lady Tigers handed them their first loss. They lost three seniors, Kim Shaw, Julie Gayle, and Carol Chilton, all of which were valuable to the team. Carol Chilton and Julie Gayle played all four years and started all four of them. Kim Shaw has played for three years and was a big asset to the team. Carol Chilton and Lisa Garrison made first team BRL All Con- ference and Ozark Foothills All Conference teams this year. Carol also had the honor of being named to the All District team and 2nd Team All State this year, which is a very prestigious honor. They ended 19-6 when the season came to a disappointing halt in the District Championship after losing to the Neelyville Tigers, but the Lady Tigers should return just as strong next year having three starters back. Below .500, but a very im- pressive season overall, considering some of the mishaps and injuries such as Tim Bridges facial injury. They did place second in the Black River League Tournament, though. The JV Tigers did very well with a record of 15-5. This year the Tigers had a new coach, Bill Burfield, coming from Campbell, MO, to coach and reside in the area. He was accepted very well by the team and the community, display- ing patience, and a very professional attitude. Many athletes were honored at the annual sports banquet; five of them were seniors: Jon Whitney — highest field goal % and most rebounds; Tim Bridges — Free Throw % and Defense; Steve Harper — Most Assists; Brad Frye and Robert Henson are also seniors. Each night, after a day of learn- ing new cheers and practicing, the squads are evaluated and award- ed a ribbon depending on their performance. The ribbons rank from highest to lowest: 1. Superior, 2. Excellent, and 3. Outstanding. Our high school cheerleading squad received three superior and two excellent rib- bons, they also received a spirit stick which is awarded for show- ing the most spirit for that day. They eventually lost in the finals of the District Tournament The Tigers beat some very good times this season, and had a couple of heartbreaker losses. All the players made a contribution to the team, especially the performances from Byron Phillips, and Tim Sutton who were named to the All-Conference team. Clubs are a ashade different from year to year. It may seem that the activities are repeats of the previous year, but the people involved are dif- ferent and the details always change. The Pep Club prepared the dance after the homecoming. They got the music, decorations, and the refreshments all together for the dance. The Student Council got the votes, the backdrop, and the theme ready for the homecoming so we could know who the queen of Clearwater is. At the beginning of the year, FHA always has a picnic, with lots of food, so they can get to know the new members. This year they had a Halloween party. All of the members brought a date. They watched a scary movie, ate pizza, went on a long hayride, and built a big bonfire. They also went Christmas shopping at Cape. They had dinner meetings about once every other month after school. At the end of the school year they got enough people to go to Six Flags. The FHA members help the March of Dimes Walk for Life and collected money for them. FHA had one con- test, the most handsome guy contest. Science Club is involved in many outdoor ac- tivities. They went on a spring float trip, par- ticipated in the Blackwell Ridge clean-up, and had a steak fry. These are just a few activities that the members enjoyed. Beta Club put more emphasis on service to the community than on fund raising. They did service activities such as delivering Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, visiting tne nursing home for Valentine’s Day, and having a jog-a-thon for St. Jude’s Hospital. Beta Club also had fund raisers such as the Market Place Sale, the children’s games at the Fall Festival and a community cookbook. In order to go to the Beta Convention, members had to earn points. Mrs. Elrod kept track of the points on all of the things they did for the club. The more members did for the club, the better chance they had to go to convention. Holly, Kelly and Angie have been working on some cheerleading set-ups. The letters in VICA stand for the Vocational In- dustrial Clubs of America. The meaning of these words, however, covers a lot more than meets the eye. The VICA organization represents the in- dividual. It helps a student have courage in himself and have pride in his work. There are 14 Clearwater students enrolled in VICA and in Vo-tech. There are schools enrolled in VICA across the country which shows that VICA isn’t known only in our little comer of the state but across the country. The students enrolled in VICA go to district competitions each year to compete by showing the skills they have acquired at Vo-tech and to com- pete in contests using club business procedures and opening and closing ceremonies. VICA also has contests in speech-making and job interviews. The day enjoyed at Vo-tech most is Fun Day. This is where we set aside one morning while the weather is still nice to play games, listen to music, and eat food. We all thought it was the “funnest” day of the year. Carolyn Brown, President; Charles Wilkins, Reporter, Prescilla Weaver, Secretary; Holly McAllister, Treasurer, are the officers for VICA from our school. These Juniors are the winners of those prizes. fhe 1987-88 Prom was one of the best proms ever given by the Juniors. The colors of the prom were lavender and deep purple. With balloon trees and a canopy made of lavender and dark purple streamers, the creation was one of a secluded dance floor that lost the feeling of being a school cafeteria. The prom theme was — SAVE YOUR LOVE, by Great White, which played as Joel Bearden and Prescilla Weaver were crowned king and queen. For the amount of money spent, the Juniors created a gorgeous prom setting. 64 V9 teds Joel and Prescilla had the dance floor all to themselves on th special night. As you can see, everyone had a great time. Marty, Cindy, Faith, and Pam were a few of the brave ones to attempt Robbie and Tina showed everyone that I to gel things started. they were having a terrific time at the | prom.
