A long and successful coaching career ended this year when Ed Stafford retired after 23 years of working with junior high athletes. His coaching record speaks for itself. Stafford’s boys basketball teams suffered only one losing season since 1956. After leading his first boys team to a 10-5 mark in 1956-57, he went on to post an overall record of 308 wins and 141 defeats. Winning, however, is not the most important function of a junior high coach. Stafford has always subscribed to old quotation as his motto for coaching. That quotation reads: ‘'When the one Great Scorer comes to write against your name, he writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the game.” Coach Stafford tried to instill this attitude in his players. “In learning how to live, you have to learn how to accept defeat,” he said. “You don’t win all the games in life.” His players showed their appreciation for him at a sur- prise party at school when they presented him with this basketball cake and two plaques, one from the boys and one from the girls. The school district, players, and parents also showed appreciation to Coach at the halftime of his final game, presenting him with team pictures and an autographed basketball and volleyball. Tributes were also made by Superintendent Phillips and junior high principal Otis McGonigal. Coach left the court with these words, “I will take many fond memories with me when I leave this gym and bench tonight.” 79 Cheerleading trophies from Lesterville Invitational Tournament and the Black River League Tournament. 7th and 8th Grade CHEERLEADERS Cindy King Holly Coleman Jeff Wells Lori Skaggs Tena Welker Chris Dodson Amy Schlater Teresa Fann Laura Dover HOMECOMING CORONATION Homecoming Queen — Pam Hand Junior Class Candidate Escort — Mark Snyder First Runner-Up Eliza Howard Pep Club Candidate Escort — Pat Shaughnessy Second Runner-Up Deanna McAllister Beta Club Candidate Escort — Tim Holmes Retiring Queen Flower Girl Charlotte Schlater Myers Julie Foster Escort — Glen Gamblin Page — Adam Rayfield 82 Janet Sutton Senior Candidate Escort — Glen Ellis Lisa Cassidy Sophomore Candidate Escort — Kevin Adams Terri Phillips Freshman Candidate Escort — Brad Miller Sabra Worley F.H.A. Each student, his parents, and his teachers can chart the student’s pro- gress in the basic subject areas by means of checklists. Checklists of objectives are available for every basic subject in every elementary grade level. Eventually, the system should eliminate the problem of deciding whether a child has mastered all the essential material for his grade level. Sandy Hackworth. a third grade teacher, works with a student on one of the checklist objec tives: telling time. The next step is to incorporate instructional management into the secondary grades. Math and language arts checklists will be used in grades 7-9 beginning next year. -c, « c‘.r t 0 ,.«9 •S3 1 - 4 ,eu ' ,t Ck ®‘ G vV .e .01 ’ ,0 ’T.
