Probably because of the Latin-American influence in this area, Spanish is the most popu- lar alien language offered. By the time a student has completed his four years of Spanish he is usually able to converse fluently and understand this language well. At Clearwater High three popular foreign languages are offered. Those students with a flare for Greek and Roman mythology are extended four years of Latin, the basis for all other Romance lan- guages. MARJORIE KANN, McKendree College, So. III. A recent addition to the Language Department is French which has been warmly and enthusiastically received here at C.H.S. A second year of this language is now being offered with plans for a possible third year next year.

Physical Education is sometimes slighted as a snap course, but it is actually one of the most important courses which can be offered. Students learn the right way to exercise in maintaining a healthy body. They also have an opportunity to learn several sports and to discover any athletic ability which they might possess. The coaches cer- tainly deserve much credit for the great job they do not only in the instruction of physical educa- tion, but also in the encouragement of good sportsmanship. 21

music department In charge of the Music Depart- ment ' s vocal section is Mr. Paul Butler. He is the very talented di- rector of the Mixed Chorus, the Madrigal Singers, an d Girls ' Glee Club, all of which perform fre- quently and admirably at school programs and c musical functions. Directing the instrumental sec- tion of the Music Department is Mr. Yanetovich and what a re- markable job he has done with the Crimson Tornado Band! His great efforts to place a first class band on the field culminated in last year ' s sensational victory in which the band won a first place rating on a national scale in Washington. Also under the direction of Mr. Yaneto- vich are the Clearwater High Con- cert Orchestra and the Tornado Ca- det Band. 23
