McCarthy-Moreland Photographers a 1962 staff OF CLEARWATER HIGH SCHOOL welcomes you to . . . OUR TOWN CLEARWATER • FLORIDA our days were busy from morning ’till night school life Because high school years are difficult ones, we ap- preciate someone who is easy to tu rn to when one needs understanding and help or simply someone who, during our everyday routine, passes you with a warm smile. These are the people who keep us encouraged and help in making the memory of our Alma Mater a treasure. Such a person is Mrs. Clegg Mac Aleenan. One can always count on her even temper and good humor. These have certainly been an asset to her during her years serving as advisor to the annual staff. Afternoons and weekends for Mrs. Mac Aleenan are often spent helping the staff put together our Aqua Clara. And can you imagine anyone having to go through the rough times, pressured dead lines and all that photography every year! Thank you, Mrs. Mac Aleenan. May this annual be a symbol of appreciation to you from the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-two. CLEGG MAC ALEENAN Students: Now, as in the future, when you turn the pages of this AQUA CLARA , may they cause you to dream with your eyes wide open. These words and pictures have been put into a book with the intent to make you quite oblivious of your im- mediate surroundings, as memories of high school days brush all else aside. May all who look upon these pages see evidence of acts of chivalry, intellectual and physical accomplishments, gentle and virtuous deeds by which some of you rose to honor. Herein you will also be reminded of many joyous incidents which will lead you to recall others too numerous to be contained in this volume. Lastly, may this yearbook serve as a mirror for you to see yourself as not only what you were but also what you might have been and what you can still become. William Makepeace Thackeray penned the words: The world is a looking glass and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Much can be learned about a person by the way he expresses himself in both writing and speech. We are particularly proud of the English Department here at C.H.S. During his three years of this subject, the student is given extensive instruction in grammar, writing, and literary appreciation which will prove invaluable in any field of endeavor. Besides the usual studies found in the high school English Department, this school has placed great emphasis on creative writing. For the second year, a literary magazine is being presented which contains original works of the students. Also, for the first time, an Advanced Writing class is being offered in which students are coached in the fine art of creative writing for one semester. The second semester is a continuation of the Advanced Writing plus a look at some of the world ' s finest literature. JOHANNE R. Physical Education is sometimes slighted as a snap course, but it is actually one of the most important courses which can be offered. Students learn the right way to exercise in maintaining a healthy body. They also have an opportunity to learn several sports and to discover any athletic ability which they might possess. The coaches cer- tainly deserve much credit for the great job they do not only in the instruction of physical educa- tion, but also in the encouragement of good sportsmanship. 21 language department MILDRED TURNER, Rollins College, U. of Columbia, U. of Florida, A.B., Span- ish I, II, III, IV, Los Gauchos. Probably because of the Latin-American influence in this area, Spanish is the most popu- lar alien language offered. By the time a student has completed his four years of Spanish he is usually able to converse fluently and understand this language well. At Clearwater High three popular foreign languages are offered. Those students with a flare for Greek and Roman mythology are extended four years of Latin, the basis for all other Romance lan- guages. MARJORIE KANN, McKendree College, So. III. By use of academic activity in conjunction with laboratory work, projects are designed, their construction studied and the project produced. These tasks are accomplished by hand and machine processes. The Arts and Crafts course aims primarily to develop basic under- takings and skills through working with ceramics, leather, copper enameling, copper tooling, and other materials. It includes the de- velopment of an ability to use leisure time by filling it with self- satisfying work. Mechanical Drawing has been called the language of industry and engineers, architects, and designers use it to record their ideas. Whether the stu- dent is frantically searching reference materials for an eleventh hour report or merely an enjoyable book with which to relax, he is certain to locate what he wants with the help of our very efficient library staff. The library is also the center of. audio-visual materials used by teachers to enrich classroom lessons. We are indeed fortunate to also have a very complete college section in the library. The Reading classes, instructed by Mrs. Krug, are of two types —College Reading for the students who wish to broaden their in- terest in the world of books, and Remedial Reading for the pur- pose of helping students better understand what they read. Our football team, although greatly hampered by a lack of depth, put forth one of its best seasons. The running and passing attacks were combined with excellent line work to highlight a most successful season. The Tornadoes Basketball squad, restricted by the fact that not a single letterman was in uniform, surged through its season leaving in its wash many thrilling upsets of pow- erful teams. A great personal effort was demonstrated by each player and Coach Karr certainly did a fine job in his first year as mentor of the team. As the annual went to press, the baseball team was prepar- ing for its first contest of the season and was featuring a sparkling defense, consistent hitting, and a fine team spirit. It looks like a good year for the baseball team. The track team was getting ready for its first meet and a great season on a fine new asphalt track. The team looked very good, with skilled runners, jumpers, and weight men and 1962 promises to be a record-breaking year for The Tor- nadoes track team. Exceptional putting and driving highlighted an impressive Golf team at C.H.S. The team looks set to offer stiff com- petition in a tough Western Conference! For several years now, C.H.S. has placed one of the finest Boys ' Swimming Teams in the state and this year promises to be no exception. All but two of last year ' s starters have re- turned and it looks very good for the Swimming Team. The Girls ' Swimming team, under Mrs. McCracken, looks very smooth, and they ' re expected to pose a threat to opposing Conference teams. The team has some fine young Sophomores in the field who will support the returning varsity swimmers in good measure. Honoring the Boys ' Tennis team this year is foreign ex- change student, Luis Pina, who is expected to be the shot in the arm needed to boost an already excellent squad. It looks very good for the Tennis team. The Girls ' Tennis team is showing great power thus far in the season and are expected to place high in the Confer- ence standings. Thus, the 1961-62 school year at C.H.S. is proving to be a realization of the hopes of her students. The student body has been most receptive and enthusiastic about the sports program and a warm feeling tingled in all students as they cheered both in victory and in defeat for their gallant Torna- does of C.H.S. Many excellent floats and cars were entered by the various clubs and or- ganizations of the school and all the students participated enthusiastically. Then came Tornado Tales at which the Homecoming Queen, Miss Betty Lou Anderson, was revealed to the students for the first time. Following this ceremony came a fine array of Homecoming skits devoted to the theme, Wreck the Rebs. As a novelty attraction to this year ' s Homecoming, the C Club sponsored a carbeat in which students mutilated an old auto with a sledge hammer. Then followed the most impressive affair of Homecoming, the big game with Dixie Hollins. The Tornadoes were pre-game underdogs, but proceeded to Rout the Rebels and emerged from the gruelling contest victorious. The final festivity was the wonder- ful dance in which the queen, lovely Betty Lou, and her court were presented to the exhilarated students. When they return to their native lands, they will be deeply missed by everyone. dorthea vahl of west germany 75 , 76 , 77 I had my chance last year. My eight months in New Zealand were the most rewarding and exciting of my life. I adored the people because they were so friendly and hospitable. I now have two families, two sets of friends, two countries, and a new outlook on myself. It gives me a tingly feeling to think that I can travel half way around the world and find a country as beautiful and as free as my own. Walk together, talk together, oh ye peoples of the earth; then, and only then, will we have peace. Kathy Ladd Most of all I remember the people . . . the Turks were kind and generous in all they did. Each one of them took the time to talk to me, and each was eager to share his thoughts as well as his possessions. My Turk- ish family made sacrifices for my sake; more than that, they made me a real part of their activities and their life. The kids went out of their way to see that I was having a nice time. They bothered to explain things to me when I didn ' t understand. Someone was al- ways ready to tell me about the confusing customs or to translate the language. It was hard for me to leave the people who had come to be my family and friends for a summer. Someday, Insallah (God will- ing), 111 see agaii the people who have given me so much.
