LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT MILDRED TURNER Rollins College. U. of Col- umbia, U. of Florida, A.B., Spanish I, II, III, IV, Los Gauchos. MARJORIE KANN McKendree College, So. III. U., A.B., Latin II, III, IV, Inter Nos. This year we had a long sought addition to the language department. French, another of the romance languages, is being offered for the first time and has met with great success — in fact, a second year course is inevitable. The French Club, although in its embryonic stage, is formulating big plans for the coming year, with a trip to New Orleans as one of its possible ventures. So “nous verrons,” as they say in France. Spanish has always been a very popular language in our school, because of our proximity to our Latin-American neighbors. A large number of students are presently enrolled in this department, which offers a continuous program of four years. Many of the students increase their knowledge of this exciting language through the activities of Los Gauchos, the Spanish Club. Here members have the oppor- tunity to use the language through conducting meetings in Spanish, taking part in skits, and listening to native speakers. Their annual banquet is usually given at a Spanish restaurant and this year many members attended, as a group, the per- formance of Jose Greco in Tampa. Many students with an interest in the classics take Latin from which the Ro- mance Languages are derived. Four years of Latin are offered at C.H.S. The Latin Club, Inter Nos, is open to Latin students who have a high grade average and who want to learn more about the history and customs of the ancient Romans. JANET WELLER Hood College, A.B., French and English II, French Club. 26

. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Our Industrial Arts program includes General Woodworking. Arts and Crafts, and Mechanical Drawing. Woodworking students learn to design and construct products in wood. By use of academic activity in conjunction with laboratory work, projects are designed, their construction studied and the project produced. These tasks are accom- plished by hand and machine processes. The Arts and Crafts course aims primarily to develop basic undertakings and skills through working with ceramics, leather, cooper enameling, copper tooling, and other materials. It includes the development of an ability to use leisure time by filling it with self-satisfying work. Mechanical Drawing has been called the “Language of Industry” and engineers, architects, and designers use it to record their ideas. Mechanical Drawing teaches visual and constructive imagination and the habit of exact thinking. RUSSELL D. STICHLER Western Mich. U., U. of Fla., B.S., M.A.E., Indus- trial Arts. NED FRISBIE Miami U., Bowling Green U., Toledo U., Ohio State U., B.S., Mechanical Draw- ing. H. FORREST SMITH U. of Fla., B.A.E., B.F.A., M.Ed., Meeli. Drawing, Art. 25
