DEPARTMENT This is definitely a scientific age, for science has more and more influence on everyone’s life. Because of increased demand for young people in the many fields of science, Clearwater High School offers a complete and comprehen- sive science program. The Science Department offers the following courses: Physics, both traditional and P.S.S.C., and the newly added Beginning Physics, a one semester course planned to follow one-semester Chemistry II or Bi- ology II; Chemistry I, a general survey of several fields of chemistry, such as inorganic, colloidal, and industrial; Chemistry II, an elective for those who have had Chemistry I and Algebra II. Like Chemis- try I, it is a general survey of all fields of chemis- try, but it places more emphasis on accepted theories and principles. One-semester Chemistry II is offered only during the first semester and is followed by either Beginning Physics or Biology II. Biology I is an attempt to satisfy the common curiosities and won- derings of young people about life in a changing world. TV Biology, as a part of project 7, uses tele- vision as a major resource in teaching large classes of students. The course is little different from the general Biology I course, and the objectives of the two courses are the same. Biology II is a one-semester course offered to juniors and seniors who have com- pleted Biology I and Chemistry I. Physiology is an elective for Seniors with grades of “B” or better in their past science courses. The course is a general survey of the structure and func- tions of the various systems of the human body. 21

DEPARTMENT History — the teaching of America’s heritage, past and present — is taught at Clearwater High School in order to help in the future students studying sit- uations of the past; we hope to improve things in the future and learn how to live with one another. Among the courses offered are World History, Amer- ican History, American Government, Psychology, and Economics. One sign of the modern age is the fact that there is both an American History and World History class using TV, to supplement the les- sons taught by the teacher. 23
