DEPARTMENT The scope of the English department includes writ- ing, speaking, listening, and literary appreciation. This year an increased emphasis is being placed on the stu- dent’s writing ability. Here at C.H.S. students are given opportunity to express themselves in writing through paragraph development, themes, critiques, precis, and the research paper. A highlight of this year’s writing is the literary publication, a collection of the best crea- tive writing at C.H.S. The mechanics of writing are not overlooked, for many hours are spent on punctuation, sentence struc- ture, and correct usage. Also vocabulary study and spelling play an important role. As important as the writing, speaking, and listening is the development of appreciation for good literature. A survey of both American and English literature offered, including the study of novels, short stories, essays, poetry, and drama. An outstanding feature of the year was the presentation by the Jesters of two Shakespearian plays, King Lear and The Taming of the Shrew. 15

DEPARTMENT Clearwater High School is fortunate to have an up-to-date mathematics de- partment. Courses for the college-bound the business student, the stay-at-home student — in fact, for everyone — are available. Mastering the basic concepts is the first goal of every student in C.H.S. After having done this the door is open to such ideas as sets, polar graphing, calculus and modern algebra. 17
