In this, the 1961 Aqua Clara, we will always be reminded of the hand of friendship that we have extended — not only to those near to us but also to those from far acress the sea. In our own individual way, each one of us has contributed towards making our school what it is today. In the future, if the obstacles that usually hamper the road to success can be dimmed for the briefest moments by the memories in this book, then it will have served its purpose. For most of us, this is just one of three great years. But, for those of us who are fortunate enough to have earned the title SENIOR, this year has a deeper meaning; for this is our special year — the end and the beginning. And so, we leave in your hands— to care for and to love — our Alma Mater, Clearwater High School. iHMimminiiiii |g Nancy Collman. Editor-in-chief ; ' isi ■up m m lie ill s3S ■ Dear Students : As you came this way, did you learn the Golden Keys of Opportunity? What is the secret of worthwhile achievement? There is no secret about it. It is the result of sincere and determined work, initiative, en- thusiasm, courage, and similar attributes. If you want knowledge, you must toil for it; if food, you must toil for it; if property, you must toil for it. TOIL IS THE LAW OF LIFE. Work as faithfully as those who have been accorded successful in their various walks of life. History makes it evident that these notables among mankind owed far more to INDUSTRY for their success than to their respective genius. If not before, now so dedicate your life to work for a great future in the ever-present frontiers which are before us. Capacity never lacks opportunity. It can not remain undiscovered because it is sought by so many eager to use it. In your quest of worthwhile achievement, may you have the spirit manifested by President George Washington in this statement: “I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most valuable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” Robert Glenn, Principal , WILLIAM JUSTICE Dean oj Boys; Assistant Principal — B.S., Rollins Col- lege. This year an increased emphasis is being placed on the stu- dent’s writing ability. Here at C.H.S. students are given opportunity to express themselves in writing through paragraph development, themes, critiques, precis, and the research paper. A highlight of this year’s writing is the literary publication, a collection of the best crea- tive writing at C.H.S. The mechanics of writing are not overlooked, for many hours are spent on punctuation, sentence struc- ture, and correct usage. Also vocabulary study and spelling play an important role. As important as the writing, speaking, and listening is the development of appreciation for good literature. A survey of both American and English literature offered, including the study of novels, short stories, essays, poetry, and drama. An outstanding feature of the year was the presentation by the Jesters of two Shakespearian plays, King Lear and The Taming of the Shrew. 15 MATHEMATICS RUTH ADKINS Marshall College, U. of Ky., A.B., Algebra II, Plane Geometry. Because of increased demand for young people in the many fields of science, Clearwater High School offers a complete and comprehen- sive science program. The Science Department offers the following courses: Physics, both traditional and P.S.S.C., and the newly added Beginning Physics, a one semester course planned to follow one-semester Chemistry II or Bi- ology II; Chemistry I, a general survey of several fields of chemistry, such as inorganic, colloidal, and industrial; Chemistry II, an elective for those who have had Chemistry I and Algebra II. Like Chemis- try I, it is a general survey of all fields of chemis- try, but it places more emphasis on accepted theories and principles. One-semester Chemistry II is offered only during the first semester and is followed by either Beginning Physics or Biology II. Biology I is an attempt to satisfy the common curiosities and won- derings of young people about life in a changing world. TV Biology, as a part of project 7, uses tele- vision as a major resource in teaching large classes of students. The course is little different from the general Biology I course, and the objectives of the two courses are the same. Biology II is a one-semester course offered to juniors and seniors who have com- pleted Biology I and Chemistry I. Physiology is an elective for Seniors with grades of “B” or better in their past science courses. The course is a general survey of the structure and func- tions of the various systems of the human body. 21 SOCIAL STUDIES RICHARD BRADLEY Central Mo. State, U. of Ky., A.B., M.A., Am. Among the courses offered are World History, Amer- ican History, American Government, Psychology, and Economics. One sign of the modern age is the fact that there is both an American History and World History class using TV, to supplement the les- sons taught by the teacher. 23 HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT The Homemaking program is constantly grow- ing and includes four major parts: classroom in- struction, Future Homemakers of America chap- ter, home projects and home visitation, and the rapidly expanding adult program. The Future Homemakers chapter is growing in numbers, activities and Degrees of Achieve- ment. One of the main purposes of this organiza- tion is to develop leadership abilities. Contrary to the old belief, classroom instruc- tion consists of much more than just cooking and sewing. The range of areas includes every- thing from these standbys to child care and Home Nursing. Equal stress is now being put on principles as well as skills in all areas. ZYLPHIA LEWIS Eastern State College, Uni- versity of Kentucky, B.S., and M.A., Homemaking, Future Homemakers of America. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Our Industrial Arts program includes General Woodworking. Arts and Crafts, and Mechanical Drawing. Woodworking students learn to design and construct products in wood. By use of academic activity in conjunction with laboratory work, projects are designed, their construction studied and the project produced. These tasks are accom- plished by hand and machine processes. The Arts and Crafts course aims primarily to develop basic undertakings and skills through working with ceramics, leather, cooper enameling, copper tooling, and other materials. It includes the development of an ability to use leisure time by filling it with self-satisfying work. Mechanical Drawing has been called the “Language of Industry” and engineers, architects, and designers use it to record their ideas. Mechanical Drawing teaches visual and constructive imagination and the habit of exact thinking. RUSSELL D. STICHLER Western Mich. U., U. of Fla., B.S., M.A.E., Indus- trial Arts. U., A.B., Latin II, III, IV, Inter Nos. This year we had a long sought addition to the language department. French, another of the romance languages, is being offered for the first time and has met with great success — in fact, a second year course is inevitable. The French Club, although in its embryonic stage, is formulating big plans for the coming year, with a trip to New Orleans as one of its possible ventures. So “nous verrons,” as they say in France. Spanish has always been a very popular language in our school, because of our proximity to our Latin-American neighbors. A large number of students are presently enrolled in this department, which offers a continuous program of four years. Many of the students increase their knowledge of this exciting language through the activities of Los Gauchos, the Spanish Club. Here members have the oppor- tunity to use the language through conducting meetings in Spanish, taking part in skits, and listening to native speakers. Their annual banquet is usually given at a Spanish restaurant and this year many members attended, as a group, the per- formance of Jose Greco in Tampa. Many students with an interest in the classics take Latin from which the Ro- mance Languages are derived. Four years of Latin are offered at C.H.S. The Latin Club, Inter Nos, is open to Latin students who have a high grade average and who want to learn more about the history and customs of the ancient Romans. JANET WELLER Hood College, A.B., French and English II, French Club. 26 PAUL J. BUTLER U. of Conn., Columbia, M.A., B.S., F.S.U., Profes- sional Diploma, Chorus, Girls’ Glee Club, General Music, Madrigal Singers. Mr. Butler is in charge of the vocal section of the music department. He is the director of the Mixed Chorus, the Madrigal Singers, and the Girls’ Glee Club, all of which perform at school programs and at other functions. His work in preparing these groups has j made their appearances memorable. I MUSIC DEPARTMENT Ml Everyone knows what a wonderful job Mr. Yanetovich does with the band and orchestra. He is tireless in his ef- forts to keep the instrumental branch of the music department at the high level it has held for many years. He is in charge of the Crimson Tornado Band and the Clearwater High Concert Or- chestra, Tornado Cadet Band, Harmony and composition. In addition to learning how to organize his thoughts, he also learns to speak more effectively. Speech I and II are for all, Debate is open to selected students. Among the students’ activities are N.F.L. Congresses and Debates held throughout the area on weekends. Speakers compete in other subjects such as extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, and dramatic interpretation. 28 D.E. is a vocational training program for students interested in the field of distribution. D.E. students are trained for careers in retail, wholesale, and service selling businesses in the community. After graduation many of these students continue on full time employment at the position in which they trained. Clearwater High School career seekers have an opportunity to pursue their chosen course in trades and occupa- tion by their membership in the D.C.T. program. These working D.C.T. students are supervised by their advisor, Mr. Roberts. LIBRARY AND READING Anytime during the school day diligent students may be found using the library facilities. Whether it is reference materials or just an enjoyable book with which to relax, the student is sure to find what he wants. The Library is also the center of audio- visual materials used by teachers to enrich classroom experiences. We are fortunate to have a very complete college section, also. The Reading classes, instructed by Mrs. Krug, are of two types — College Reading for the students who wish to broaden their interest in the world of books, and Reme- dial Reading for the purpose of helping stu- dents better understand what they read. Both are one semester courses. ELLEN JAY KRUG U. of Ky„ A.B., M.A., Reading, Public Rela- tions. 30 Everyone is extremely grateful for the efforts of the excellent cafeteria staffs. Danielle, who is from Zurich, Switzerland, has been attending C.H.S for the past year. She is staying at the home of Charleen Belcher. Since she has been here, she has learned many things about American customs which she records in her diary. She has also attended many of our big formal dances which she has enjoyed very much. Besides learning all about us, she has also taught us many new and exciting things (such as Swiss recipes). We have all enjoyed knowing Danielle and are deeply grateful to the Student Council for making her stay pos- sible. In closing, we would like to extend a hand of friendship from the entire school to Danielle Geering, our foreign ex- change student. Among these are Homecoming, all school elections, the Goodwill Clothing Drive, and the school Christmas Party. These would be impossible without the able leadership of Mrs. Harman. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council’s membership is comprised of the five elected officers plus an elec- tions chairman, publicity chairman, the presidents of the Senior, Junior, and Sophomore classes, the president of the Inter Club Council, the president of the Senate, the editors of the Aqua Clara and the Clearlight, and a Junior and a Sophomore representative chosen from the Senate. SENATE Through his elected homeroom senator, each student at CHS has a method of expressing his opinion or viewpoint on just about any matter dealing with the student government of the school. The Senate meets twice a month to serve as a link be- tween the Student Council and the student body. This is one of the busiest organizations in school as it sponsors the annual homecoming dance and the sale of individual school pictures. This year the Senate also took charge of the Christmas Cheer program, which was a tremendous success. W BOOKS The third branch of the student government is the Inter-Club Council, comprised of the Vice Presidents of all the clubs of CHS. The main purpose of this group is the coordination of all club activities, but the organiza- tion is also responsible for the Homecoming Parade and the bonfire held after Tornado Tale. Much time and hard work went into making this year’s activities a huge success. ILmmm Row 1: Sarah Jo Harman, Mary Lynn McAvoy, Bob Curry, Barry McCullough. Much time and hard work go into each and every one of the eight editions published each year. Those students on the staff gain valuable’ experience in the mechanics of writing. They learn how to recreate all of the items of interest which occur throughout the school year, how to edit material, to sell ads, and to prepare layouts and articles for printing. From the beginning of his sophomore year, membership in this club is the dream and goal of every boy in C.H.S. The Club’s initiation week was enjoyed by everyone as the candidates for membership were made to do many crazy stunts. jy ▼ ' ft ' V- ' f U m i J CA ; V ' 1 1 u Row 1: Coach Earle Brown, Harry Ryder, Preston Sanderson, Jim Brandt, Don D’Anna, Mike Walsh, Mike Dulligan, Rocky Couch, Herbert Sullivan, Neil Storrs, Mr. Dudley. DIVERSIFIED COOPERATIVE TRAINING The major project for the year was the preparing of Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to be distributed among needy families. Members attended the District Meet- ing at Riverview High School in Sarasota and delegates attended the State DCT Con- vention held in Ft. Lauderdale. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Winners at the First Annual DECA Leadership Confer- ence in Florida, held in Orlando, March 3 and 4, 1961, were as follows: First place in Area of Distribution Manual “Floral Designing,” was won by Carolyn Carter; second place in the extemporaneous speech contest was won by Georgia Beadle. Tom Sleepe was elected Vice President of Florida DE Clubs. The other CHS delegates attending the DE conference were Harry Haigley and Eddie Caton. Carter, Beadle, and Sleepe will attend the National DECA Leadership Conference in Chicago April 20, 1961. The DE students are members of both state and national organizations of the Dis- tributive Education Clubs of America. They will enter local, state, and national contests in DECA for essays on selling, merchandise manuals, and area of distribution manuals. Five DE students from CHS will attend the first Florida DECA Leadership Conference which will be held in Orlando in March. Coordinator for this class of thirty DE students is Mrs. Ruth Pope. Row 1. The club meets twice a month, and it sponsors many community, as well as school, activities throughout the year. But the most popular event on the F.H.A. calendar is the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet held each spring. Under the leadership of its able officers and its sponsor, Mrs. Zelphia Lewis, the club is one of the most active in CHS. FUTURE NURSES For any girl interested in pursuing nursing as a career, this is an ideal club. Under the guidance of Miss Hall, the advisor, the members of the club are given a peek into the future to see all that the fields of nursing entail. They are put to work in Morton Plant Hospital and in this way gain valuable experience in nursing and are also able to get a n accurate glimpse of hospital life. 112 FUTURE TEACHERS Row 1: Vivian Thornton, Lucy Hotsenpiller, Sandy Vogel. Row 2: Leslie Burkhart, Harriet Hutchison, Jean Southern, Sandra Roth, Thelma Smith. The Future Teachers Club is a very important club around C.H.S. because it helps those who are interested in the teaching profession to further develop their in- terest. Under the guidance of Mr. Bradley, the members of F.T.A. learn many important facts about teaching. Someday these same students may return to their old classrooms to be teaching instead of learning. f ' • m Row 1 : Gene Coley, Bob Anderson, Bruce Carruthers, Richard Boyd, Mike Martin, Tim Anna, Claude McMullen, Mr. Amey, Advisor. HI-Y This year Hi-Y, one of the newest organizations at CHS, grew tremendously. It is basically a service club, but the bi-monthly meetings also had programs of discussions, forums, speakers, and recreation. Under the supervision of the Clearwater YMCA, the club sends representatives to the West Coast Regional Conference and to Tallahassee once a year, where they participate in youth and government activities. INTER-CHURCH YOUTH COUNCIL The Inter-Church Youth Council, comprised of elected representatives from each church, strives to create a better feeling of fellowship within the school by holding brief devotional services. These services are held twice a month before school and add much to the spiritual life at Clearwater High School. INTER NOS It is a popular saying among the Spanish students that Latin is a dead language. To disprove this is the existence of the very active Latni Club, Inter Nos. They are associated with the National Latin Club and only those students with high averages are asked to join. Under their advisor, Mrs. Kann, they participate in several school activities such as Tornado Tale, and they hold their annual Roman Banquet. . « WQ® Row 1: Jeanne Rasmussen, Linda Hoffman, Stephanie Weller. KEY CLUB Key Club, one of the best known and most respected organizations around our school, has time and time again been recognized for the many services it per- forms. A Key Clubber, in addition to maintaining a high scholastic average, must show leadership qual- ities and a desire to do service for the school. They sacrifice one period a day in order to serve us by checking books in and out, assisting the librarians with the processing of new books, and doing anything else which makes our library even better. Visual aids are becoming increasingly important in the schools of this modern age, and so is the role played by our A.V. assistants. Under the watchful eye of their advisor, Mrs. Knight, they roam from room to room in order to operate the film projectors for us. We are indeed grateful for the service they perform. It is open to any student with a “B” average in Spanish provided that they also show an expressed desire to learn more about the language and the customs of Spanish speaking peoples. The club this year participated in Tornado Tales and the Homecoming parade. Under the capable assistance of Mrs. Turner, the meetings are conducted entirely in Spanish.
