Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1948 volume:

THE SHIP Some ships sail east and others west By the self-same winds that blow; It ' s the set of the sail and not the gale That determines the way they go. Now, the ways of ships are like the ways of men, As they travel on thru life; It ' s the set of the soul, and not the goal That determines the calm or the strife. —ELLA WHEELER WILCOX In the year nineteen hundred forty the senior class dedicated to Clearwater High the name of Aqua Clara for its yearbook. Since that time, each class has tried to record, not only for the present students, but for future generations, the activities and organizations of our school. We, the class of 1948, in endeavoring to carry out the meaning of Aqua Clara, by snapshots, writeups, and classroom pictures, chose as the theme for this year — THE GOOD SHIP C H. S. AND HER CREW ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS FLORIDA GROWER PRESS J. ARLOS OGG, Photographer BRYN-ALAN STUDIOS We dedicate this book to a person who has given much of her time, thought, and inspiration to us. But, she has been more than an adviser or teacher. Besides guiding us, she has been a friend — a friend whose thoughts we have shared, and whose ideals we have set on the highest mast. It is an honor for the Senior Class of 1 948 to show its gratitude by dedicating this annual to MISS SARAH DE KIRKPATRICK. A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows on rows of natural objects, classified with name and form ' — Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. COACHES Head Coach Bill Justice came to Clear- water from North Carolina last fall after being a star athlete at Rollins College and serving in the Marines during the war. Assistant Coach Max Spellman, altho he hails from Georgia, came to us from the University of North Carolina where he re- turned to finish his education after serving in the Navy. Serving without any pay, Roberts Brown has coached our B-Squad teams and A-Squad Track. Coach Brown grew up in Florida and returned to study at the University of Tampa after serving in the Army. A-SQUAD The Tornadoes improved a great deal this season. Altho suffering defeat four times, twice they lost by only one point, and came out with six wins. Returning after two victories, the Torna- does thrilled an estimated 7,000 people in a Homecoming win over Tarpon Springs. The students elected Queen Jerry Burke and her court, Eleanora Fuleky, Hadley Shaw, Hazel Blackburn and Nancy McMullen to reign over the Homecoming game and dance. Altho losing to our traditional Thanksgiv- ing opponents, St. Petersburg, the Tornadoes finished the season with a decisive win over Punta Gorda. Co-captains were John ; Li l 7 Abner and Bobby Ogles.
