A) Hugh Flanders B.S., Presbyterian tOe Pass On Tlumbered Steps We pass on numbered steps which taken must be measured as they fall, For from the ebbing echoes of these silenced halls We hear the footsteps which passed this door before. We almost hear their youthful, beating hearts Holding happy, hidden dreams — Hearts that hope and wonder, Souls that seek and wander, As we laugh and dream and saunter on. But well we know That though our feet may never climb these stairs again, Though we escape these halls The doors, slammed shut by the winds of fancy, Have trapped a portion of our hearts inside Left to mingle with the echoes. ;g agi£ AT last it’s dons; the way is finished! And twelve years now consummate in this— our graduation. Oh, how we pursued that distant, glorious day; Every game, every word was ha: nested to the thought That someday we would step forth as men and women! But now we look behind; We faintly recall the first years. The sand table, and the colored chalk, The rhymns we learned, and the stories we read, And how when the lesson bored us Our minds fled beyond the windows And we heard the poetry of singing birds And saw the splendor of the sunbeam shining down the aisle. We pass over the years to the moment that brought us here To this school, then strange and new. But is she strange or new today? We’ve grown within these walls ana become a part of her! Within those corridors, within these rooms, We passed the weeks and months that constantly, silently enhanced our stature. As memories reflected shroud the past in her peculiar cloak of fancy. We hear the faintly fading footsteps, The happy days, the things that made us laugh — And at once we listen to the silence and the murmur of the things behind. At last we pass beyond these doors nd with certain sense of sadness we hear them And after the latch snaps tight, barring us from the Fountain of Fellowship, Only the sweet spring of recollection can give us drink. Oh, you smile and jest and take this lightly lightly, But, you too, will listen for this echo. For, Juniors, this school embraced our hopes — Endeared them in the bosom of her presence. She opened her heart to love in common fellowship And turned our dreams to the life and breath of action. She shut her doors upon darkness And dispelled those mists and clouds with wisdom, While on her hearth she breathed warmthh into every dream that we shared with her. We were Juniors then, We who are Seniors now. We’ve come to know this school, But you can’t know it — now. You can’t feel the current Surging upward from within our hearts. Thus, Sophomores, the way of school will pass for you. In your class you’ve entered at the entrance of the hall — At the bottom of the stairway that looms o’erhead You say you don’t — “too much work,” Or, “I wish I were a Senior.” As though at times by its very mass It would fall and crush you in its volume. For do you like this school? But when you have walked this hall You too will stop and look behind. We sat in our classes and fretted when teachers (Cruel and inconsiderate — we thought) Assigned more work or gave harder tests than we liked. Some said Silas Marner was a bore And what Soph cared if all the polished words of the ancient Greek Were buried with his bones? Yet, now we pause; we sneak a look behind, But, alas, the doors are closed! Team work, physical growth, and mental quickness are improved by participation in athletics. Members of the student body find pleasure in being a responsive audience to those games in which their teams take part. This year, as never before, Clearwater High h as entered whole heartedly into sports for girls and boys. The girls have organized active volley ball and basket ball teams under the direction of Miss Carolyn Avery, physical education teacher. Coach Jake Weger and Coach Hugh Flanders, along with the boys, have devoted much time and effort toward pro¬ ducing football, basketball, softball, tennis, track, and swim¬ ming teams of which C. H. S. can readily be proud. C Club First Row: Wallace Blackburn, John Abner, Billy Tsacrios, Jack Allen, Second Row: Norman Kenyon, Roger Kenyon, Albert Ceraolo, Steve Hughes, Frank Williamson. S. “Tornadoes , greatly improved over last year, won three games out of ten this season. After losing the first three games of the season they rallied to overcome the Plant City “Planters 30-12. In an exciting “Homecoming” game, the team suffered defeat by Dradenton’s “Golden Waves” 20-7. Tarpon Springs won the next tilt, by one point, triumphing over Clearwater for the first time in 15 years. After rising to win over Jesuit and F. M. A., the Tornadoes were trampled by Orlando 13-0. The season’s best played game was Thanksgiving day with St. Petersburg, Clearwater led at the half but the “Green Devils”, with luck on their side, scored an extra point at the last minute, making the final score 7-6.
