VARSITY BASEBALL BASEBALL FEVER - CATCH 1711 I'm going, going, gone, along with another year as I soar through the air viewing the Marauders bat- ting toward success. L the sphere of threads, witness the endurance and excitement that they possessed all season. Although they began the preseason with a loss to Dunedin, their increased unity grew steadily to boost team work. All players dis- played a renewed sense of cont?- dence compared to past seasons. Achievement and pride were the guiding forces that led them in their quest for success. At their first home game, the Marauders won their seventh vic- tory in the nine games. Defeating such district rivals as San te Fe and Palmetto, the Marauders won three games in a row. As a result of continuous unre- Ienting rain, the team was forced to play the last nine games in ten school days, Two ten-run games lowered their record to 7-Z yet the Marauders lcept up their spirit. Hoping to receive a fresh chance in districts, the Marauders traveled to Sarasota and played the ever- tough Cardinal Mooney squad. A tight ball game opened up as Moo- ney hit Central with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. H- nalljq when the last Marauder bat- ted, the scoreboard read 12-5, leav- ing the Marauders to close the season with 7-9 record. Although the season ended with a halt, there were many accom- piishments worth noting. Three of the four seniors played new posi- tions. Jeff Hnlay played superb de- fense at Hrst base, Chris Mucci played with only one error in left Held and Tom Nash closed the sea- son by throwing out runners con- sistently. The batting averages overall displayed the hard work and practice that each team mem- ber endured. junior Corey Boyd, batted over 400 with four home runs, ten stolen bases, and twenty RBIs. Freshmen Mike Hildebrandt and Mike Minacci paid big contri- butions as well. g A future plus, says Chris Mucci, is that the team consisted of ten underclassmen. fEven withzf twelve defeats, they did not make the Marauder season a loss. The last time I made flight, I felt a par: of sadness. Each Marauderr put forth the best of his ability and obtained the unity he strived for, along with an outstanding seasongg
