The name was changed for the purpose of standardizing the book. It presented an unlimited supply of ideas all of which per- tained to the Bison. The theme of the first Eison was The Indians. This was followed by the first settlers, early American colon- ists, and other historical themes up to the present day. , K.-vs'1'f few V J --v'f?1'3'T T-flwllirei -nur FTM 95536 'Zan' l QA.-fl ,.-. .i.,-,-' , ... --, A.,-,Al-. a il -' - .,..-fg-fe :: - -. - - . Jim 7960 Senior Officers: Secretary, Pat Rummings, President, Sam Clark, Vice-President, John Axelson, Treasurer, Mona Solomon, Historian, Carolyn Rowe. l' 5 Tell me, are these members of the Senior Chorus really paying attention, or does it lust look that way? As we seniors look back on our last year in C.H.S., we remember a year full of many activi- ties and good times. Leadership for the seniors of 1960 was in the hands ot: Sam Clark, Presi, dent, John Axelson, Vice-President, Pat Rum- mings, Secretary, Mona Solomon, Treasurer, and Carolyn Rowe, Historian. The annual Washington Trip at Thanksgiving time was enjoyed by sixty-seven of the seniors. Those who went will never forget the wonderful and exciting time they had. This year the stu- dents of C.H.S. presented two all school plays, The Trip to Bountiful on November 9 and Charley's Aunt on February 29. Seniors par- ticipating in these plays were: Pat Ziel, Bill Price, Charles Stone, John Shively, Sam Yost, and Torn Lansberry. Many members of the senior class partici- pated in the year's lDownbeat. Mona Solomon and Bill Price attended district chorus at Morri- son Cove, and George Gaylor, Jane Rohrbaugh, and Sharon Podmenik traveled to Philipsburg to represent C.H.S. at district band. George Gaylor was our senior representative at Regional Band. This year's Aqua Prom will be remembered by the 1960 seniors as one of the year's most memorable occasions. In football, Tom Trout received honorable mention on the all district football team, and both Tom and Joe Bentz held honorable mention titles on the central counties team. In basketball, Tom Trout earned a place on the second all district team while Paul Frantz received honorable men- tion on the all district team. Other seniors onthe basketball team were Joe Bentz, Don McGarvey, Conrad Rougeux, John Axelson, Charles Carter, Ira Showden, and Terry Michaels. With four senior varsity wrestlers, our wrest- ling team was known as one of the best in the State. Seniors Sam Clark, Dennis Hile, and Orvis Fletcher won district titles while Orvis Fletcher earned a regional championship. This year our track team was undefeated in duel meets and also won the Big Three meet with DuBois and Punxsutawney. Bill Lewis set a new all school pole vault record of 'll' 4V2 . Joe Bentz won district honors in high iumping while Tom Trout earned three district wins in the T80-low hurdles, 120-high hurdles, and one-half mile re- lay. Tom set a new school record in the high hurdles and was a member ofthe one-half mile relay team which also set a new all school record. Three seniors, John Tornatore, Bill Shively, and Paul Frantz, were members of the golf team. John was a trophy winner and one of six quali- tiers at the District 9 golf tournament. Loris Ire- land, John Axelson, Ira Showden, Don McGarvey, and Lonnie Howell were seniors on the baseball team. Many seniors participated in both the Gym Demonstration and the Gym Clinic. Seniors, Woody Wisor and Judy Walker, won first place honors at the Gym Clinic. Our senior year came rapidly to a close with Shelf Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement activities. We want to extend our sincerest ap- preciation to Mr. Pritts for the guidance he has given us this past year and to our teachers tor the wonderful help they have given us. This picture has its up's and down's. With Moose and Fish, it's freckles at first sight. BERTRUM G. After flying through the school year, the jun- ior class looks back upon its achievements with satisfaction, and faces forward toward a prom- ising senior year. Our class ofticers this year were: Charles Mil- ler, President, Jerry Fletcher, Vice President, Betsy Anderson, Secretary, Bill Franson, Treasurer, and Dennis Nagy, Historian. 7 There was an abundance of juniors in the school sports. In varsity football were: Harold Kitchen, Melvin Woodring, Joe Maloni, Ed Carr, Glenn Stone and Mac McCoy, iust to name a few. Only two iuniors lent their able services to our basketball eftorts-Harold Kitchen and Mel- vin Woodring. Wrestling was, however, the opposite from basketball. We were forcefully doing. 5 6 l s I 0 ', 62 Jerry and Charlie are hard at work on that centerpiece but don't ask me what the rest of the committee are 1936 - 1890's was the theme of the Bison Gretchen Hiller Junior Class Counselor represented by Bob Thomson, Jerry Fletcher, Glenn Stone, and Tom Knepp. Juniors also did more than their share in the spring sports: track, with Jack Lyda, Charles Miller, Ron Carns and others, baseball, with Tom Ogden, Melvin Wood- ring, Bill Morrison, and Graydon Leech. Our school spirits were skillfully lifted by our junior cheerleaders: Nancy Carns, Sue Kline, Rob- erta Erhart, Montrue Viard, Judy Bumgardner, and Becky Clark. Acting ability was blooming this year as we had two all-school plays: In the Trip to Bountiful, our class was represented by Edie Lou Robinson. Five juniors showed oft their talents in Chclrley's Aunt. They were: Bill Franson, Kay Sadoti, Larry Butler, Kathy McGarvey, and Sandy Brion. We had two juniors sent to Regional Band, they were: Janice Buck, and Charlene Vogelsong. Also in the musical strain, our Downbeot was given a brisk shot of humor and song by many talented juniors. Our junior year reached its climax with the presentation of the all-school prom, Aqua Fan- tasy, a roaring success because many juniors and their advisors pitched in to make it so. As our junior year closes, we feel a touch of pride, we hope that we have not failed in the eyes of our predecessors. Our class otticers for the past year were: Ed Jacobs, president, Carol Tobias, vice-president, Pat Henchbarger, secretary, Karen Smith, treas- urerg and Ken Carlson, class historian. Looking to the sports scene, we see that many of our sophomores participated on our numerous athletic teams. We were represented on the varsity football team by Dick Miller, Bob Zimmerman, Greg Gep- pert, and Ken Carlson. There were many fine sophomore mainstays on this year's junior var- sity. Although we had no varsity letter winners in basketball, the majority of the junior varsity players were sophomores. On our varsity wrestling team we had two sophomores. Bob Zimmerman, our unlimited, won the Hollidaysburg Christmas Tournament while Ken Carlson was district champ at 165 lbs. With spring came baseball and track. Bill Johnson, Les Hicks, Bob Zimmerman, and Gary Sayers helped booster our fine track team. Gary Sayers set a new Big Three half mile record this year. Jerry Haney, the baseball team's second baseman, was the only sophomore letter winner in baseball. X Y it 725, - wg- n . 1939 - The Bison was dedicated to the spirit of democracy. Marilyn Williams represented our class at dis- trict chorus. Other talented sophomores, too numerous to mention, helped create the music we heard in this year's three evenings of music. Our Musical Downbeat was made a success with the help of ci large number of sophomores in the spotlight and behind the scenes. Cheering for our sports events were Lois Oden, Carol Tobias, Elaine Carfley, Karen Smith, and Bonnie has C' 'l9l 'O look dis' Carol Lippert. BASEBALL Coach Harold Wilsons forces came up with a winning season this spring even it they had to tight the elements as weil as the opposition in their quest for victories. The diamond opened the season with a deci- sive win over Brockway on the strong pitching arm of senior John Axelson. The Herd then bowed to St. Marys 5-TO but took revenge on Bellefonte with a 7-4 victory. Then followed a lcss and win to Philipsburg and Red Bank Valley in that order. St. Marys was the next victim, as we ran them T7-3. This victory was short lived since Curwensville soon beat us by a score ot 4-1. The Wilsonmen bounced back to again beat Red Bank Valley with a 7-1 victory. In the final game ot the season Curwensville again beat us by a score ot il-7. With quite a few lettermen returning we hope tor a bigger and better season next year. 6 The boys are going to meet ano.her victory lg- ly' Coach Dan shows the boys the secrets of successf TRACK The 1960 track season is one that will be long remembered not only by the school, the squad members, and the fans but particularly by Coach Dan Snyder who guided the thinclads to the first undefeated track season in the school history. In the initial meet Clearfield overcame State College 75-52. In the second of four dual meets, the Snydermen downed Punxsy 91-36. The third and fourth dual meets were with Marian Center, a new comer to our agenda, and DuBois. The Herd won by scores of 82-45 and 8O'f'2-46'2. The Big Three contest was something to behold. Rec- ords were set in the high and low hurdles, pole vault and half mile by Snydermen sensations Torn Trout, Bill Lewis, and Gary Sayers. Another person who broke and set many records this year was senior Joe Bentz. He cleared the dizzy height of 635 for a school high jump record that should stand for a long time. Coach Snyder has hopes for another success- ful season next year with a few returning letter- men and much experience to work with. GCLF The T960 Clearfield High School Golf Team, hampered by inclement weather and inexperi- enced players, suffered a rather lean season. John Tornatore, the lone returning letterman, led the linksmen to a T3-2 victory over Red Bank Valley in the opener. This was followed by a loss to powerful Philipsburg I0-5. Coach John Filsinger's proteges then humbled Brookville twice in succession before being stopped by DuBois 5115-9V2 and Philipsburg l4Vz-Vi. The golf squad next bowed to State College, DuBois, and State College again before being mollified by a nip-and-tuck battle with St. Marys which we won 8-7. Senior John Tornatore was our lone entrant in the State Tournament, but playing in adverse conditions and with stiff competition from many districts, John failed to place. Coach Filsinger has high hopes for the fol- lowing year for this year's team gained invalu- able experience which is most helpful on the greens.
