Senior officers President Joyce Schultz Secretary Kay Peavy Historian Jutta Hager Vice president Tom O Day Treasurer Anna Unch 99 Challenges await usp we proudly go forth We Seniors look back wlstfully and happily on our last year at CHS, under the guidance of Mr. Pritts our class counselor. Class officers were: presidenthjoyce Schultz, vice-president Tom O'Dayg secretary-Kay Peavy, treasurer Anna Unch, and historian-Jutta Hager First among the high spots of the year was the Washington Trip during Thanksgiving Vaca tion. What memories that brings back! Then in December came the all-school play, The Late Christopher Bean, which proved a great success Senicrs Jerry Koval, Sandra Howland, Sandra Brown, Jim Walther, Jim Shugarts, and Amos Hixon took part. With two new senior cheerleaders Barbara Ondo and Jerriann Jury, added to the squad the teams received very enthusiastic support. Football brought Guy Graham a place on the all- district team and the honcr of being All-Central County's quarterback. Both Tom O'Day and Ed Carns were on the district team and were award- ed honorable mention on the Central County Team. Tom also received honorable mention on the state team. In basketball Tom led District IX in scoring and was named to the all district team. Guy Graham, Anson Graham, Dave Schucker, Glenn Myers, and Dennis Boal were also on the team. Wrestling brought the regional and dis- trict championships to Ash Woolridge and district championship to John Kruse. Other senior wres- tlers were Art Weiss Jr Roland Woodring Mel vin Lingle and Martin Elbell Our track and golf teams both had good seasons In track Kenny Rishel was in state com petition and Bob Henry Amos Hixon and Ken Rishel earned letters and sweaters The girls golf team defeated and shut out all challengers Bill Tornatore and Giles Lanager went to State College as representatives of the boys golf team The Downbeat had many seniors among its cast as well as in the chorus District chorus and band also counted many C H S seniors as members Sue Sherkel went to state chorus On May 8 came the all-night prom Come to Hawaii with the seniors as guests. No need to ask whether that was fun! Two seniors Susan Weisshaus and Jutta Hager were chosen as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition after several ex- aminations. Many of our classmates are going on to higher education and have already been accept- ed at various colleges or schools of nursing. Our thanks to the qualified staff of C. H. S. who made this possible. Here's a parting-and-sad-thought: of the 377 sophomores who entered these portals three years ago, only 230 are left at graduation. We who remain will attempt always to hold our ideals high, in accordance with our school stand- ards. These senior art critics venture outside into the cold Bectnlks invade C H S or IS thi a man from Mars'7 to admire the work of the art classes. We proceed with assurance We, the first class to have spent three years in the new school, are now leaving to seek our places in the world among those who have pre- ceded us. We hope that we have been worthy of our school and its institutions, and that we will make C. H. S. proud of us in the years to come. Although we are turning our backs forever on our high schocl days, we hear the strains of our Alma Mater and realize that Clearfield High we still will hail while memory holds her sway. Our trademarks As the school year draws to an end, the class of 1960 salute their ofificers: Sam Clark, President, John Axelson, Vice President, Louise Learish, Secretary, Carolyn Rowe, Treasurer, Donna Bookwalter, Historian. With the help of our cheerleaders, Pat Rum- mings, Joyce Ardery, Jane Winslow, Verlee Rol- ley, and Donna Bookwalter, we fought our way to numerous victories in our school sports. In varsity football we had Tom Trout, Bill Jones, Joe Bentz, Howard Ogden, Bill Shively, Jerry Ded- man, Henry Burnett, and Tony Baucia. Out for basketball were Joe Bentz, Paul Frantz, Tom Trout, and Don McGarvey. In wrestling we were proud of Sam Clark, Jerry Graham, and Howard Ogden. Judy Walker and John Tornatore repre- sented us in golf, while Loris Ireland and lra Showden were onthe varsity baseball team. Un- fortunately there isn't enough space to mention all of the juniors on the track team. We were represented in the all-school play, 'The Late Christopher Bean, by the unmistak- able talents of Dave McCracken. Then we had our third annual gym demon- stration in which we saw interesting exhibitions of acrobatic skill. The Downbeat, as usual, was a great suc- cess. Frank Buzzanco, Tom Lansberry and Joyce Ardery supplied us with jokes, and many other juniors also participated. Last but by no means least was the Ha- waiian Cruise, our all-school prom. With the untiring eFforts of the junior class and their ad- visors, the prom was a complete success. Thanks to the excellent guidance of Miss Hiller, our class counselor, we have had a very successful year. GRETCHEN HILLER Junior Class Counselor Mono Solomon discusses her future plans with Miss Hiller. Whut's this, u sole on Perry Como's sweaters? We gather together in order that we may learn. Jim I9 9 Snphvnwlum, Every day brings new knowledge. When we entered senior high school on September 2, 1958, mcst of us were ready to accept the responsibility of being sophomores. Soon we settled down and began to do our best to uphold the school motto lCourtesy, Honor, and Servicej. The class officers are: Joe Maloni, presidentg Bill Franson, vice-president, Kay Sadoti, secre- tary, Becky Clark, treasurer, and Leif Rowles, historian. Sophomores strengthened many of our teams throughout the year in many sports. Two athletes, Harold Kitchen and Melvin Woodring, were members of the football team and received varsity letters. Bob Thompson and Jerry Fletcher used their ability to strengthen our varsity wrestl- ing team. Leif Rowles was the lone sophomore member of the varsity rifle team. Many other athletes strengthened the baseball and track teams. There were, also, many sophomores who contributed their ability to the junior varsity teams. Marta Pavlinsky, Sue Kline, Becky Clark, Nancy Carns, and Celia Wrigley were the sopho- more girls who led the class in cheering for our teams. Sophomcres have participated in many other activities besides sports. Kay Sadoti and Kathy McGarvey starred in the all school play, The Late Christopher Bean. Joe Dague won a merit award at the science fair in Indiana and an honorable mention at State College for his entry, The Edge of the Sea. Joanne Van De- Mark was the outstanding girl in homemaking. Many sophomores were members of the band, orchestra, and chorus. With their help we have been entertained by these groups many times. The Musical Downbeat, one cf the high spots of the year, was made successful by the help of many talented sophomores on stage and behind the scenes. Looking back over the year, we find that it has been very eventful and successful. J' lf' GRACE FRANCEMORE Sophomore Class Counselor ' p . You taste it first, Coleen tells Caro n. 'Iii' ,i lcv t-' COACH ES This year we saw the resignation of Miles Smith from the position of head basketball coach, that he has ably filled since 1948. During these past 11 years, Mr. Smith has posted only two losing seasons, and had two teams win district honors, one in 1951, win- ning the Southern District 9 championship, and one in 1956-57, winning the District 9 Champ- ionship. Mr. Smith has coached such great players as George Wise, All-State Forward in 1956-57. Mr. Smith will be missed, and we wish to express our thanks for the fine job he has done to promote basketball in Clearfield. We hope that the successor to the iob of head coach can live up to the fine record that Mr. Smith has established. In the first contest with Lock Haven the herd was victorious, winning by a score of 6-2. In the second battle, with Jersey Shore, the Koonsmen went down to defeat in a tough game, 7-12. Again feeling their form, the Eisons defeated a tough DuBois team by a score of 13-12, down in their luck once more, the herd dropped a game to State College, 12-19, and a qame to Philipsburg-Osceola, 18-39. Finding themselves once more, the herd went on the warpath and won the next four games, showing an amazing amount of skill on the gridiron. They defeated Punxsy 13-7, Tyrone 45-O, Bellefonte 32-12, and Northern Cambria 7-O. ln the arch-rival game with Curwensville, the Koonsmen met defeat, this time by the score of 18-13. Seniors Tom O'Day and Ed Carns both won a berth on the all-district team, and senior Guy Graham won a berth on the all-central counties team. Coach Koons is looking forward to a good season next year that may equal or top the one posted this year. BASKETBALL The court-men of Clearfield High School finished the season with an 8-12 record, post- ing the first losing season that Coach Miles Smith has had for years. In the first contest of the year, the Bisons defeated Reynoldsville 43- 39. The second game was a repeat of the first, with Clearfield beating Philipsburg 55-51. A surprising Curwensville team then handed the Bisons their first defeat, 37-33. Still not playing up to par, the Herd fell victim to St. Marys 42-48. Bradford was then handed a loss to the tune cf 51-46. Meeting Philipsburg in their second contest of the year, the Smith- men again were victorious, downing them 54- 50. Falling down again, the Bisons were de- feated in the next two battles, 39-52, and 45- 48, by Brookville and DuBois, respectively. The Bisons gained some momentum and de- feated Kane 51-45 and Brockway 66-44. Hit- ting another snag, the Herd went down to the teams of Punxsy, 46-64, Bradford, 48-68, and again to DuBois, 36-48. Clearfield gained re- venge in the next game, beating Curwensville by a score of 45-31. Then the dark days came. The Herd lost the next five games, being de- feated by Ridgway 47-50, Brockway 29-30, Reynoldsville 55-60, Brookville 63-65, and the powerful Punxsy, 52-59. In the final game of 4 the year, the Herd downed Kane by the score of 54-41. Senior forward Tom O'Day distinguished himself by winning the district scoring crown, with a total of 305 points. O'Day also won a first place berth on the All-District team. What are you guys laughing about? Practice just started. U 6 . U 5 f 7 J ,J 0 1' 1 Q x AIA I gifs. 4 . . BASEBALL .gm I ISU: The Clearfield Area Senior High School Baseball team posted an un-impressive 2-9 losing season this year. The team did not play up to its potential in the course of the season. In the first contest with Bellefonte, the Bisons lost by a score of 9-2. In the same week, the Herd again met Bellefonte, this time gaining revenge by a score of 3-O. In a tight game with Altoona, which was won on a home run, the Bisons lost by ci score of 'I-0. In a nine inning contest with St. Marys the Wil- sonmen lost by a score of 4-2. A perennially strong Philipsburg team handed the next two defeats to the Herd, by the scores of 'I4-I and 6-I. The Bisons lost the next two contests to Altoona and Red Bank Valley, 8-O, and I2-I. Clearfield won its second and last game of the year in defeating Brockway 4-I. In a close tussle with Curwensville, the Bisons were downed by a score of 4-3. In the last game, with Brockway, the Bisons battled I5 great innings to go down in defeat by the score of 3-2. It is hoped that the next season will pro- duce a better record than this. With the help of new men onthe squad, there is a good pos- sibility that this hope will become a reality. ln l958, the Bison Thinclads carried on the school's winning ways as they finished the sea- son with a fine record of victories. In the opening meet with Red Bank Valley the Bisons won quite easily by a score of 1195-712. This is the highest number of points ever to be com- piled by a Clearfield Track Team. The second and last dual meet was with Bellwood-Antis. Clearfield won 90-37. The Bisons placed sec- ond with 5Ol2 points to State College 81, while Huntingdon came in third with 27V2 in a triangular meet. The Snydermen again won the Big Three meet by a close score, Clearfield 69, Punxsy 60 and DuBois with 30. Juniors Tom Trout and Joe Bentz each took a second place at the District Meet, but the team failed to place high. Many records were set this year, among them is Bill Lewis' pole vault record of il' 2 which he set at State College. Under the coaching of John Filsinger, Clearfield Area High School's golf team posted a 9 and 3 record for this season. ln their opener, the Herd golfers defeated Punxsy T4- l. The Linksmen chalked up five more victor- ies by marring the records of DuBois, Reclbank, Brookville, and St. Marys. The scores of these games were 8V2-6V2, T3-2, 'l2V2-2V2, and llVz-3V2. The Bisons dropped their first game to the Mounties of Philipsburg by the score 856-6V2. Defeat came again as State College and the Mounties once more topped the Herd by the scores ll-4, and 9V2-5Vz. Bouncing back after defeat, the Linksmen blanked Red- bank 15-0, and gained revenge on State Col- lege by chalking up the final game of the season, 8Vz-6V2. Two of the most impressive records were turned in by Bill Tornatore and Giles Lanager. Bill placed first in the District 9 Championship, with Giles a close second. Both boys went to the State Meet. Judy Holdsworth, the sophomore titlist, and Sarah Lyons turned in the best of the girls team records. Members of the team are Bill Tornatore, Giles Lanager, John Tornatore, Marvin John- son, and Ashley Woolridge. BOTTOM ROW, left to right: J. Tornatore, M. Johnson, A. Woolridge, P. Frantz, G. Lanager, W. Tornatore. SECOND ROW: J. Shugerts, B. Wilson, J. Anderson. J. Walker, S. Lyons, J, Holdsworth, Hold it! l think you'll like this one! Coach Dan Snyder's Clearfield Area High School volleyball team failed to retain its posi- tion at the top of District 9 by bowing to Punxsy. In pre-district warm-up games, the Herd was able to defeat the Chucks 3 games to 2. ln the Southern District 9 Tournament, Clearfield went to the losers bracket, by losing to Reynoldsville. The Bisons started their comeback by defeating Brockway, and also by gaining a revengeful win against Reynolds- ville, they were able to try for the champion- ship against their pre-district warm-up foes, Punxsy. However, they were unable to pick up the championship. VOLLEYBALL We don't know what Trout finds so hilarious, but the other members of the track team seem to consider this camera angle quite seriously.
