SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As we, the class of 1958, wistfully look back over our senior year, acknowledging our suc- cesses and failures, we have the satisfaction of knowing we really did our best. When the doors opened September 4, 1957, we entered with our hearts light and our hopes high, determined to accomplish big things right from the start, which we did. We elected the following as our class leaders -Jim Freeland, president, Bob Jay, vice-presi- dent, Jane Evans, secretary, Nellie Lombardo, treasurer, and Paul Stegner, historian. Although our football team did not have a winning year, it was in there trying. Nor did the basketball or wrestling teams have winning seasons but as our football team, they did their best. Our class was well represented in these three sports. Our track team had a very suc- cessful year-winning all their dual meets. Dale Kuhns won the District Championship in the shot put and discus while Charles Fama did so in the iavelin. Our volleyball team also boasted an undefeated season in dual competition and, in addition, won the district championship. A fairly successful season was had by our golf team. Sen- ior members were Jim Lanager and Clayton Teats. Our baseball team did not come through victorious in all its games but we feel this was partly due to the arrival of a late and wet spring and a rather green team. Our seventeenth annual variety show, Musi- cal Downbeat, was an exceptional combination of talent and comedy. In January Meretta Gise- white, Jane Evans, Sarah Wiggins, Claude Kowal- ski, Jim Barton, Bill Betts, and Mike Podmenik represented CHS at District Orchestra. At District Chorus in March were Brenda Foor, Jane Evans, Jean Lewis, Nancy Johnson, Claude Kowalski, Jim Barton, Les Mitchell and Janet Baird. Our District Band representatives were Janet Baird, Brenda Foor, Claude Kowalski, Jim Barton, Mike Podmenik, and Rita Spingola. Perhaps the two most memorable occasions of the year were the Washington Trip last fall, which proved to be interesting and educational, and the All-School Prom on May 9, at which a good time was had by all. The All-School Play, That's My Cousin, also proved a high spot of the year. Our school year sadly came to a close with Shelf Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement ceremonies. We pause to extend our lasting ap- preciation and gratitude to the faculty and ad- ministration. Our only hope is that we will be able to uphold the high standards of our school as we iourney forward toward building a better world. With Peggy Borst, Joyce Billctte, Sarah Lyons, and Joyce Amon, our junior cheer- leaders, urging on our teams, we did quite well. ln varsity football we had Kenny Rishel, Ash Woolridge, Tom O'Day, and Guv Graham, in basketball, Tom O'Day and Glenn Myers, and in wrestling, John Kruse, Bill Tornatore, Art Weiss, and Ash Wool- ridge. The Downbeat was also a success, with Sue Sherkel, Jim Stewart, and Jim Shugarts providing jokes and laughs as well as juniors taking part in other forms cf entertainment. Then came the gym demonstration, in which we saw many of our classmates do- ing acrobatics, that we were jokingly warned not to practice at home. That's My Cousin, the all-school play, was another high spot in this school year. Pauline Maloni, Sarah Lyons, Sandy Brown, and Dick Spingola took part in this delight- ful comedy. The last, and to some the most impor- tant, event of the school year to which many looked forward eagerly was High So- ciety, the all-school prom, which the juniors gave in honor of the seniors. With teachers advising the various committees headed by junior class officers, the planning took on an almost feverish pace as prom time neared. Thanks to the apt direction of Miss Hil- ler, our junior class counselcr, this year has passed very rapidly and successfully. As we, the class of 1960, filed into senior high school on September 3, 1957, all of us were impressed by the beautiful building in which we would study for the next three years. Most of the sophomores realized that we were entering one ct the final phases in our education. Soon, as we became accustomed to senior high, we plunged into the swing of things. The class officers fwho have led us very ably through this yearj are: Sam Clark, president, Louise Lear- ish, vice-president, Pat Rummings, secretary, Tom Trout, treasurer, and Kelley Nevling, class his- torian. Many sophomores strengthened our teams in various sports throughout the year. Jerry Dedman and Darrell Rowles earned varsity letters as members of the football squad. Sam Clark, a regular on the C.H.S. wrestling team, won the district nine championship in his weight class. Joe Bentz was a varsity basketball player during the winter. Sophomores-Anthony Guy, Bill Shively, Don McGarvey, and Joe Bentz-played on our volleyball team, which became the district nine champion. Unfortunately, there isn't enough space to mention the sophomores who aided our track team, but they all did an excellent iob. Lon- nie Howell and Loris Ireland were mainstays of our baseball squad this year. John Tornatore was a regular on the boys' golf team, the girls' squad was improved by sophomore Judy Walker. A great many other athletes in our class have given their talents freely to the iunior varsity teams. Adding to our enioyment of sports events were the pretty sophomores who led us in cheer- ing. Joyce Ardery, Verlee Rolley, Pat Rummings, Phyllis Shomo, and Jane Winslow handled this task very well. Other talented sophomores too numerous to mention have helped create the music we have heard on many occasions. They were members of the band, orchestra, and chorus. Represent- atives of our class in district band were George Gaylor and Mona Solomon. George also attended district orchestra along with sophomores Elaine Mitchell, Ruth Ann Gisewhite, and Mimi Crowe. The lone member of our class at district chorus was Douglas Rowles. Who can forget the Musical Downbeat with its iokes, songs, and dances? Helping to make this production a success were a large number of sophomores both in the spotlight and behind the SCeI'I6S. Soon become a vital part of school life. C. making the usual tours of the zoo, the beau- tiful Washington Cathedral, and the impressive Jefferson Memorial, Mount Vernon, National Air- port, Lincoln Memorial, Tomb of the Unknown Sol- dier, Smithsonian Institute, Department of Print- ing and Engraving, F.B.l. Building and Capitol Building. After dinner and dancing at the Lotus Club, everyone went to the Capital Theatre to see the movie Pal Joey the first evening and the next evening we attended the cinerama film The Seven Wonders of the World. Some of the most vivid memories of the trip were the over-heaped plates of food at the cafe- teria, the sleepless nights, the guide who was always saying, now on your right ...... , and the sore, aching feet from all the walking. Con- sidering all, these were perhaps three of the most enjoyable and educational days of our sen- ior year. T02 on the outside of the cage Oh, come now, Ann, it couldn't be that bad! On the up- swing, they defeated Brady Township 50- 46. They then surrendered to DuBois in a nip-and-tuck game, 39-37, and also to Phil- ipsburg 50-36. Brookville then went down 64-40. Kane moved in and succeeded in stopping the Herd 58-53. Brockway was next and lost to the dribblers 40-32. Punxsy dealt an ill-fated hand and downed Clear- field 36-32. Sandy Township and Bradford then were pounced upon by Clearfield and lost 60-46 and 46-42. This was the first time in years that Bradford had been de- feated on their home court. A strong DuBois team again downed us 47-40. Curwens- ville, Brockway, Brookville, and Punxsy then fell in line and were trampled by the Herd. In the final game of the year Kane beat Clearfield 58-49. Senior star Bob Rishel paced Clearfield with 344 points and was unanimously voted to a first place berth on the All-District Team. He also received Honorable Mention on the A.P. All-State Team. Under the capable direction of Coach Art Weiss, the matmen swept 9 of its 13 matches. In the opener, Clearfield found Bald Eagle Nittany just a little too tough and dropped a 31-11 decision. However, they bounced back in typical Clearfield style by trouncing Brockway 52-2, then Warren 30-11, Curwensville 28-17, Red Bank Valley 49-3, and Philipsburg 26-17 before being stopped by a powerful Johnstown team 23-18. The Bisons then fell victim to Lock Haven by a 29-12 score. ln the following match with State College, the Bisons were soundly beaten 34-2, the only highlight being Armando Marano's draw with eventual State Champion Tressler. However, the Bisons were not to be denied as they rambled through their remaining matches to the tune of victories over Tyrone 26- 23, DuBois 27-13, Bellefonte 20-19, and Bald Eagle Area 34-9. The Bisons once again won the District IX Tournament, placing five individual champions and racking up an amazing total of 121 points onthe way to victory. The champions were: Sam Clark, Armando Marano, Stan Fletcher, Paul Stegner, and Ken Barr. For the second straight year, and only the second time in history, Clearfield did not send anyone to the State Championship Meet at State College, as all our grapplers were eliminated in the Regionals. Clearfield dropped its opener to Bel- lefonte T3-7, then went on to defeat St. Marys 4-3. Curwensville started a three game losing streak, bouncing the Herd 8-2. Philipsburg then won 6-4, and State College was victorious in a hard fought game, winning l-O. The Herd picked up and swamped Red Bank Valley 'I6-6. Al- toona then dealt a fatal blow, defeating Clearfield 11-6. A double-header with Brockway was rained out as was the second game with Altoona. The Herd shut-out Curwensville 4-0, but was then defeated by Philipsburg 4-2. ln the final contest, Red Bank Valley again fell hard by a score of l3-3. Dale shows Coach Snyder how. .. k . cg , 7' I 0,1-' an TRACK Coach Dan Snyder's track squad posted an impressive record forthe year by going undefeated in dual competition and captur- ing forthe third year in a row the big three trophy. Showing great strength, the Bisons romped over DuBois, Red Bank Valley, Punxsy, and Bellwood-Antis in their dual meets. In all the above meets the Herd scored in the high figures, not giving their competitors a chance to score any major points. In the annual big three meet with DuBois and Punxsy, the Bisons gained per- manent possession ot the trophy for the third consecutive win. Clearfield placed second in a triangu- lar meet with State College and Hunting- don, State College taking the top honors. The Bisons failed to place high in both the central counties and Juniata Relay Meets, which is surprising after their dual meet record. Dale Kuhns and Charles Fama both took top honors at the District Meet, but the team again did not place high. Dale and Charles went on to make a fine showing in the State Meet, Dale taking a fourth place in the shot-put, and Charles a ninth place in the iavelin. f 'J K 5 y ., fir- T Mr. Filsfnger demonstrates the correct way to hold a golf clu GCDLF The Clearfield Area High School Golf Team, under coach John Filsinger, posted a fine record of 6-3 for the season. The Herd moved on to defeat State College 8Vz-6'h. Gaining revenge, Red Bank Valley and State College then defeated the Herd to make a losing streak of 3 to mar the record. in the final contest Punxsy again fell to Clearfield, 'I4-4.
