When leaving the old building, many traditions were left behind as only memories to those who experienced them. This year's new events and situations will probably be considered traditions in future years. Foremost among these have been activity time, now from 2:00 to 2:30 o'clock P. M. instead of the old time. The revised lunch program in our modern cafeteria has been limited to three twenty-five minute lunch periods, thus eliminating the familiar group scenes in the auditorium, around the corners, and throughout the halls. ln our enlarged gym program we now have the facili- ties to accommodate a large variety of activities. The chance of sitting comfort- ably through an entire activity is one of the many new pleasures that accompany a new building. Since time leaves its impression on everybody, even Benny Bison must comply with the year's progress. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Classes Organizations Activities Athletics Bisonettes 81 Faculty 7 19 69 93 107 123 jim 6,id.01'l. FACULTY Although we have moved into a new building this year and have adopted new customs and procedures, we are happy to say we have retained our faculty as well as supplementing four new members. Our new members include: Miss Margaret Fry, girls' health, physical education, Mr. Marvin Williams, vocational Eng- Iishy Mr. John Potters, who transferred from iunior high school as boys' physical education and health instructor. Our present dieti- tian is Miss Susan Kephart, who replaced Mrs. Carolyn Wise the second semester. We also received the assistance of student teachers from the Lock Haven State Teachers College and the Pennsylvania State University. Along with their students, our fac- ulty has made the necessary acliustments for the new high school. jim, Bum 7 ADMINISTRATION S. F. W. MORRISON A.B., M.A. Superintendent of Schools ELWOOD L. Baccalaureate, Shelf Day, and Commencement are now the past. We, the first gradu- ating class ofthe new school, are proud of our records and ac- complishments, and we hope we have lived up to the standards of the past. We are all anxious to move into the challenging world facing usp we desire to do as well as those who have pre- ceded us. jim 6,l:6.0lL THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1957 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS FOR 1957-President Joe Evanko and historian Cathy Scott check cn the recordings of secretary Betty Smith while vice presi- dent Paul Welch adiusts the graduation gown on treasurer George Wise. Senior Class History On September 6, 1956 we entered, for the first time, the new Clearfield Area Senior High School. Even though some of us didn't like the change at first, we all adiusted rapidly. Our football team, accelerated by many seniors, was possessor of a five-five record. As district 9 basketball champs, we experienced a long battle for the title. Our boys have the jackets to prove it. The All-State basketball team was boosted by George Wise, the school's high scorer. We had a winning season in wrestling with Tom Vokes in our class, obtain- ing a district championship. Gary Teats, from our powerful golf team, was sent into all-state competition. Paul Welch and many other seniors made for CHS a leading name in track. With the aid of many of our classmates, our baseball team rung up more wins than losses to round out the season with a successful record. District Band, Orchestra, and Chorus were well attended by our school com- panions. Carmen Santinoceto aided the trombone section in State Band, and George Belford rounded out the Bass section of State Orchestra. Everyone in Clearfield is still talking about the wonderful performance the District Orchestra gave in our auditorium. 20 Washington here we come-Seniors paying Mrs. L. R. Batcheler for the Washington trip. Seniors lining up in the gym for the academic proces GRADUATION. The Musical Downbeat was a smash hit with a good many of our talented seniors taking part in the production. Solos, dances, and instrumentals were par- ticipated in by all. The All-School Play, Onions in the Stew was well attended. De Verne Book- walter, another senior, held one ofthe lead parts. May 'IO marked the day of our All-School Prom sponsored by the able junior class. The Washington trip, also a success, was renewed in our minds many times during the remainder ofthe year. Jane Evans, treasurer, Bill Betts, vice president and Dean Learish, historian look on. Junior Class History As we, the first junior class ofthe new high school, complete the 1956-57 school yeas we review the happenings that make this year an everlasting memory in our min s. From the first whistle of football season to the singing of the Alma Mater on the second award day, the juniors' actions were commendable. President, Jim Freeland, Vice President, Bill Betts, Treasurer, Jane Evans, Secretary, Judy Schick' lijng, and Historian, Dean Learish were given the honors of representing this junior c ass. With the beginning of school came the start of the T956 football season. The junior participants wearing a football C are Charley Fama, Dale Kuhns, Dean Learish, Dick Lorah, Bill Guelich, and Albert Ogden. Learish received honorable mention All-State along with placing on the All-District and Central Counties teams. Storing the football togs away, the junior boys dribbled basketballs and re- moved extra weight in preparation tor the winter sports schedule. Dale Kuhns, Bob Jay, and Bob Rishel played important roles on the championship basketball team. All three received letters and Kuhns was awarded honorable mention on the district team. The wrestling team was bolstered by the strength of Armando Marano, Stan Fletcher, Paul Stegner, Larry Davis, Dick Lorah, and Francis Coud- riet. Stegner and Marano were district champs. With spring came baseball and track. Both groups were assisted by many juniors. On the baseball team were: Bob Jay, Ken Mitchell, Jim Freeland, Francis Coudriet, Pat Geisler, Larry Davis, Sherman Bowman, and John Eckley while Char- ley Fama, Dale Kuhns, Ashley Hilton, Jim Capatch, and Marvin and Melvin Hug- ney held important positions on the track squad. Fama and Kuhns were District IX winners in the javelin and shot. ln the Downbeat, the juniors displayed their musical talents through solos, trios, instrumental arrangements, comedy acts, and participating in the mixed chorus. The Clearfield High School auditorium was the scene of the district orchestra. As a result, many students from our school participated and made an honorable showing. Janet Baird, Cloud Kowalski, Bill Betts, and Brenda Foor represented 52 Bill Betts pulls a switch and leads the lndian club demonstration for the gym show with In- clian clubs instead of drum sticks. 1957 the District basketball playoffs at Farrell. .lunior Class History the junior class at district band while Jean Lewis, Jane Evans, Brenda Foor, Lester Mitchell, and Ron Taylor attended district chorus. The various Evening of Music programs involved many of these iuniors. In the all-school play Jane Evans, Bill Betts, Julia Loubris, Brenda Foor, Paul Stegner, and Penny Uplinger teamed-up to make successful the presentation of Onions in the Stew. The last maior event of our iunior year, the Some Enchanted Evening prom, occurred May 10. Aided by the beauty of the new school, the prom proved enioy- able. The rains that fell that evening simply added another sparkle to the En- chanted Evening. We attribute our success of the 1956-57 school year to the wonderful environ- ment which includes: Mr. Mead, the faculty, the community of Clearfield, and the people attending school this year. We hope these persons are as pleased with us as we are proud of them. We will strive to better ourselves in our coming senior year. Sophomore Class History The 1957 class of sophomores consider them- selves fortunate to be the first to spend their en- tire three years of high schocl in the new build- ing, although, they are now the lower classmen. Looking back on the past school year, cer- tain outstanding happenings re-photographed themselves in our minds. The most thrilling hap- pening we can recall was the Musical Downbeat, in which many talented sophomores partici- pated. Among them were: Peggy Jo Knepp, do- ing a toe tap dance, Sarah Lyons, Bob Lingle, Helen Adams, and Sue Sherkel singing solos, and Sandy Brown and Tom O'Day doing a novelty number which proved to be very hilarious. In our school play, Onions in the Stew, Jimmy Stewart and Edith Ryan played important roles. Turning now to the scene of sports, we find football was our opening sport. On our varsity team were Ash Woolridge, Tom O'Day and Guy Graham. Lonnie Miller, Jack Peoples, and Neil Buckley were the sophomores on the junior var- sity team. Next is basketball and wrestling season. We had only three sophomores on our varsity wrestling squad: Ash Woolridge, Art Weiss and John Kruse. We have congratulated Bill Torna- tore, who is on the junior varsity squad, many times for winning the Shcimokin Novice Tourna- ment. The sophomore boys on our junior varsity basketball team consisted of Dave Boyce, Tom O'Day, Guy Graham, and Dave Schucker. Golf is our last sport of the year. We had Sarah Lyons sings, We Kiss in a Shadow. 'fOh! Those great big beautiful dolls, says Alice McGonigal and ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Sophomore Class History four students on the team, Giles Lanager and Bill Tcrnatore, Sarah Lyons and Peggy Borst. We should give praise to the cheerleaders who did their best to encourage the teams, when the chips were up or down, they were Joyce Bil- lotte, Sarah Lyons, Joyce Amon, Judy Rolley, and Peggy Borst. Those receiving citizenship awards were: Denny Boal, Tom O'Day, Joyce Shultz, Sue Sher- kel and Sarah Lyons. Our class officers for the year were: Tom O'Day as president, Joyce Shultz as vice presi- dent, Sue Sherkel as secretary, Guy Graham as treasurer, and Peggy Borst as class historian. Since this was the first year in our new school, we hope we have set a good example for the other students who will take our place. Our activities included: the All-School Prom, the Wash- ington Trip, the All-School Play, Shelf Day, the Gym Demonstra- tion, the Musical Downbeat, and of course, Baccalaureate and Commencement forthe seniors. These events have made our '56-57 school year a memor- able one. jim, flrdllll, The C.H.S. seniors visit the lwo Jima memorial at the Arlington cemetery. The Jokesters-there were no end-men or end-ladies-with their humorous iokes, the dancers with their decorative costumes and the vocalists issuing forth with iazzy, lively, and romantic tunes, provided the well received entertainment. BASKETBALL The 1956-57 basketball squad of Coach Miles Smith inaugurated the new C.H.S. gymna- sium in fine fashion as they posted an excellent 16-3 season. They won the District IX Crown-a feat only accomplished once before in the history of Clearfield High School. In their opening encounter, the courtmen showed the incentive and drive that was to carry them the rest of the season as they subdued Cur- wensville 70-29. A most-powerful Johnstown team was humbled by 52-49. The Bisons then took a win from Philipsburg and two from St. Marys. Two strong teams in Northern competi- tion, Bradford and DuBois nipped the Herd in the next two contests. The Bisons bounced back in great fashion as they defeated their next 10 opponents in succession. Among these were league victories over Brookville and Punxsy, twice Kane, and revenge over DuBois and Brod- ford. Perhaps the two games that gave the courtmen their trophy were their triumphs on the road as they smashed Brookville 64-51 and Punxsy 65-48. With two games left to play a strong Kane team hoped to overcome their defeat as they nipped the Bisons 55-52. In the season's final the cagers overwhelmed the Tide by a score of 101 to 31. Senior star George Wise, broke the single game scoring honors with a total of 54 big markers. In their section playoff game with Erie Strong Vincent the Bisons dropped a heartbreak- er 63-62, when Erie scored a goal in the final 8 seconds. Senior star, George Wise received the first all-state basketball recognition ever awarded to a Clearfield player for his fine play this season. Wise was also named to a first team District team while senior playmaker Bill Kruckenberg was named to the 2nd team. Merrill Dunlap and Dale Kuhns received Honorable Mention. The patrons and sponsors are listed in this section, and Benny Bison extends his thanks for the contributions and support of the community in making the Bison a success. A survey has been made in the Senior Class to determine their favorites. The tabulated results of that survey is listed in this section. We also took a look into the future to foretell the future of various seniors: then we developed a new system of ABC's. We hope that in years to come when you look over your Bison it brings happy memories. jluz, Bidblt THE BISON BOARD Edward Pavlinsky Editor-in-Chief Photographer Sally Gearhari Marcella Eibell Susan Boag Business Manager Senior Editor Organization Editor Joe Evanko Ned Kuhns Susan Benner!
