Burton Roe, as Henry Aldrich, an adolescent high school hoy, tries hard to raise the money needed to take Barbara Pearson, Marjorie Davis, to the Spring Dance, succeeding only in hecoming involved in various difficulties. The faculty, consisting of Eileen Livington as Miss Pike, Elaine Highfield as Miss Wheeler, Judy Mann an Miss Eggleston, Ed Brown as Mr. Patterson, and Nora Hand as Miss johnson, do little to help Henry and Bob Brady as Principal Bradley and Elnora Rishel as his secretary, Miss Shea, are too harrassed to he of much aid, indeed, Vice Principal Nelson, Bill Miller, is the only one who really understands Henry. The play wouldn't be complete without Marian Bigler as Mrs. Aldrich, Ira jay as Detective Ferguson, Roy Wise as George Bige- low, Paul jones as Mr. Vechitto, Bill Nemeth as Bill, and the students, Carrolyn Long, Willna Coulter, Clarence Baumgardner, Lois Sweeley, Dorothy Bowes, June MCFarland and Katherine Peters. Hartley Manners' Peg Q'My Heart on Friday evening, December 6. The story was cleverly woven around Mary K. Kolb as the Irish Peg Q'Connel, who had been unsuspectingly thrust upon the desperate and hankrupt Chichester household. joy Cvraham as Mrs. Chichester wanted her niece to become a lady like her own daughter, Ethel, Rosemary Lefllerg and Alaric, Clark Kittlebarger, kindly consented to marry Peg in order to fatten the family fin- ances. Peg didn't become a lady, but she had much influence on the Chichesters. jerry, Paul Silberhlatt, proved to he the only true friend Peg had. ln the end, however, everything turned out all right through Peg's quick wit, and ofthe three proposals, jerry's was the one which was accepted. The rest of the cast included the servants, jean Pearson and joe Erancemoreg james Caldwell, the villain who tried to lure Ethel away, and Allen Shaffer, the lawyer. cw ww, N1-XNON 11 11 11111s 111111 IL 11 Lk I1 F111 IX 1111 xx 111 1 1111111 1 11111111 1 11 1 11 1-1 xx x II 1 111,11 WT ILT 111 IL 1111111 1 1x11111111 1111 1x11 Ill 11111 111111111 111. For those students wishing additional music training, Miss Reno conducts two vocal classes each afternoon for which memhers receive academic credit. Besides the combined choruses a girls' trio, formed from mem- hers of the chorus, made several appearances during the year in school and in the community, proving further the success of Miss Reno's efforts. With this spirit, they faithfully began prac tice and gave their undivided attention to the coming season The fans waited anxiously for the games to get underway for it was their opinion that this squad of experienced men would surely go places. The student body also seemed to sense a change and went, one and all, football minded, consequently, Clearfield High School this year witnessed the finest cheer assemblies and pep meetings in its history The team did more than anyone could have expected With the excep tion of the first game, which was not recognized by the conference, when the Bisons tied 12 to 12 with St. Marys, the boys went through a perfect season During this opening game, Bill Miller made a 72 yard run to hang up the first touchdown for the Bisons in 1939. When the Bison gridders met and defeated Tyrone, 7 to 13, here under our own lights, they proved themselves a team. This was the only defeat given Tyrone during the entire season, and, incidentally, this victory gave us a large part of the points we needed to win the Western Conference Championship. The Morris Township game, a week later, proved to be a push over for the Bisons as seen by a score of 21 to O. The linemen, led by Mike Flanagan, did some fine defensive work in this game. Next came the game for which all Clearfield had waited when the Bisons met and defeated DuBois in a home game by a score of 6 to O. On a wet and muddy field, DuBois staged drive after drive, but couldn't find the extra umph to put it over. Gutteron began training the basketball squad after the close of the football season, the fellows resolved from the beginning to change the results of this sport in the Clearfield High School. Interest was aroused and training rules kept. With a firm purpose ahead of them they began the season by defeating Curwensville, Z5f12. This victory awakened Clearfield to a new era in basketball. The next con- test was a setback as Brookville defeated the Bison cagers, 5141 1. The fellows now saw that it would take sincere practice and training if they were to have many victories this season. After a week's vigorous preparation our cagers dealt Punxy a defeat to the tune of 33-24. For the first time in three years Clearfield was enjoying basketball victories, and although a perfect season was out of reason, we were planning to accomplish everything possible. The following contest proved to be another Clearfield triumph. Led by Russel Mitchell, the Bisons trimmed Sandy Township, Z2f13g Clearfield led at half-time, 11+4. Bellefonte journeyed to Clearfield to take a 33-24 decision from the locals. This was their first loss on the home floor, but, as Bellefonte is not in the lea- gue, it did not count in the league standings. After this game Dotty Mitchell was out of action for several weeks because of an injured ankle. Brockway, by Bison example, played the poor host and defeated the Clear- field stalwarts, 33eZ9, to make our record three wins and two losses. Brock- way led throughout the game. Mitchell again proved to be most accurate by netting 13 points. On the DuBois course the powerful Clearfield folf team then met defeat by one stroke placing Clearfield in second place. Next our volfers defeated the Bellefonte team and walked awax with all four events making the score 1243. At last the Clearfield Hin h School trophy-seekinv Uolf team won the third match of the Clearfield- efferson Counties hi h school golf association tournament. The Bisons piled up a low 354 while DuBois made a 392 in the final match. This cup is now on exhibition in our librarx among the other Clearfield trophies. Unlkel' PRIL 1, 1939, marked the opening day of practice for Coach Paul Smith's baseballers. Indoor practice was held until the weather permitted the Bison squad to take to the dia- mond. After several weeks of drill the Bisons journeyed to Philips- burg to open the season with a 12-6 victory. The C.H.S. power- house followed up this victory with a 4-3 win over Houtzdale on the home field. In the next two ventures the Bison Sluggers met defeat at the hands of a strong Penfield aggregation, 5-1, and also to a weak Osceola outfit, 10-5. Rebounding from these defeats the Bisons handed a nice looking Port Matilda club a double set- hack by scores of 14-1 and 18-10. Following through, the Clear- field hitters again defeated Philipsburg by a 4-2 count. In the next game the local boys missed fire by one run and dropped a slugfest to Houtzdale, 13f12. Penfield became the only team to defeat the Bisons more than once when they pounded out an 8-1 victory. The C.H.S. stalwarts wound up a fairly successful season with an easy Z3-O triumph over Qsceola. This brought our season's total to six wins and four losses, two of which were to Penfield, the league champions. The coming 1940 season is expect- ed to excell last year's record as practically all the fellows who play- ed last year will he playing for Clearfield this spring. During these practice games, a meeting was held for electing the captains. The newly elected captains watched the players in action before choosing their teams. The actual games were then staged, each team being scheduled to play the other teams. At the close of the season the standing of the captains of the various teams was: Mary Pellerite, Mary jane Mohney, jean Lynn and Safina Curtorillo. Previous to the banquet, which was held in the library on March 19, the girls voted for the players whom they considered most worthy of letters. The following girls were presented with letters at the banquet: Mary Pellerite, jean Lynn, Mary jane Mohney, Helen Pooler, Geraldine Porter, Jessie Sweely, Safina Curtorillo, Elaine Hummel, Myra Shaw, Betty Eamigh, Margaret Mitchell, Helen Putt, and Pearle Evans, manager.
