EDITOR’S MESSAGE This was the year! Clear Spring High was the same as the years gone by... loved by the seniors, enjoyed by the juniors, looked upon with a sense of affection by the sophomores, regarded with a touch of awe by the freshmen, and beheld cautiously by the junior high. Through our halls passed the leaders and the followers working together to turn the great machinery of Clear Spring High. • v -• Every phase of high school life seemed even more vivid this year. The soccer games were more exciting, the club meetings more interesting, the students more enthusiastic in their work. Through all the good- natured rivalry between the classes ran the thread of unity. Yes, we were from the best school in the world! With this, the staff of 1960 presents the twelfth edition of the TRAIL- BLAZER. We have tried to capture some of the wonderful phases of high school life so that, not only at the present but in the years to come, when you take this volume of the annual in your hands you will remember with pride your Alma Mater--Clear Spring High! MARCIA DAYHOFF Editor-in-Chief 3 DEDICATION DR. DAVID R. BREWER DR. ARCHIE R. COHEN • - For many years two outstanding citizens in this community have shown a great interest in the welfare of our school. In deep gratitude to them for their untiring efforts, we, the staff, dedicate this twelfth edition of the TRAILBLAZER to Dr. David R. Brewer and Dr. Archie R. Cohen. 34 IN APPRECIATION We wish to thank Mr. E. Spenser Ware for his splendid leadership of the TRAIL BLAZER staffs over the past eleven years. Without his helpfulness and encouragement the annuals would not have been possible. ■V ft ■TV f ‘I '« ' m. .-.£Vv „ MR. E. You will remember with a certain nostalgia your classmates, your teachers, and your school. You will learn to cherish your year- book, for it will increase in value as the years go by. Cheerleaders are new at C.H.S Left to right: Judy Hull, Lillie Frantz, Linda Stevens, Nancy Grove, and Patricia Barton. Varsity cheerleaders in action Our male cheerleaders lead a cheer 60 The pupils in the practical arts department have television and classroom activities. They work in crafts which include drying and pressing flowers, making notebook covers, constructing seasonal decora- tions, and constructing toys for younger members of the family. Seventh Grade The seventh grade core is taught by a television teacher in cooperation with the classroom teacher. In social studies the eastern hemisphere is the area studied. One country of each area grouping is taken for special emphasis, but all countries are studied. English, spelling, and reading are also a part of this core class's studies. The eighth grade math-science group drills in the four basic fundamentals of math - addition, sub- traction, multiplication, and division. In this class the students also study the fascinating principles of the physical world and the structure of the human body. Eighth Grade The theme of this core class, Understanding Our American Heritage, includes the study of the dis- covery, exploration, colonization, and expansion of our country. The English study includes construc- tion of sentences, capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, diagraming, spelling, and literature. The ninth grade English class’s major study is in the basic fundamentals of the parts of speech, sen- tence construction, diagraming, and literature. This basic learning prepares the student for better methods of expressing himself in speaking and writing. Ninth Grade In the ninth grade Latin class students participate in activities related to the language. This in- cludes reading, writing, using the language, and translating short stories. Through the study of this language, not only is a knowledge gained in the usage of Latin but also a better understanding of Eng- lish is obtained. Biology is the study of plants and animals and how they survive. The study is divided into two sep- arate groups. Then, each of these is broken down for thorough investigation. The plants are in four small group . The animals are in ten smaller groups. Extra credit plays a big part in Biology, too. The majority of the students undertake individual projects to study and explain before the class. Tenth Grade The primary aim of a course in typewriting is the building of a usable skill. This skill may be used to gain employment after graduation, to help the college student produce good papers, or to carry on everyday correspondence. The French class of 11A is the first-year French group. In their studies the students not only learn much of the basic grammar but they also learn things like the numbers, days of the week, and months of the year. Some of the necessary things used in conversation are taught. Eleventh Grade The aim of the Elementary Business Education class is to learn by practice the efficient handling of personal business affairs and to solve everyday problems in economics. The English IVB class is composed of commercial students and college bound students. The course includes the study of advanced grammar and English literature from Chaucer to modern English litera- ture. The class is taught over television by Mr. Alfred Fehl. Twelfth Grade The twelfth grade Advanced Office Practice trains commercial students to be better qualified in the field of business. The course instructs students in general clerical procedures, filing, financial records, and other business techniques required to make a good office worker. Driving is a skill which once mastered, serves one well for the rest of his life. This skill can be mastered by conscientiously applying the fundamental principles of good driving, and this is always a challenge to the skillful driver. It opens a whole new world, for within an hour or so one discovers an infinite number of places to go, things to see, and things to do. Don't just drive - LEARN TO DRIVE. Safe driving is of vital concern to every American. Therefore, dare to be a good driver; drive courteously, for the life you save may be your own. The Clear Spring High School library has approximately 2, 500 books, and it subscribes to twenty- eight periodicals. From 8:00 until 4:00 helpers aid our librarian to shelve, check out, repair, and proc- ess the volumes. Their efforts are invaluable to the efficient operation of our school library. And she brought forth her first- born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Included in the morning devotions are the reading of the Scripture, the Lord's Prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. To add to this is the inspiring music of the chimes from the near-by St. Peter's Lutheran Church. And the whole mul- titude sought to touch him; for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
