Through the w1ndow shouts of a newsboy are heard A newstand 1S located on the s1dewalk operated by Nathan Lucas Bus1ness seems very good Nathan IS sell1ng cop1es of the Clear Spring Da1ly Bugle as fast as he can pass them out And why shouldn t they sell well? On the very front page IS a p1cture of the Clear Spr1ng H1gh s G1rls Basketball Va.I'S1ty the Bullets and the1r coach Joyce Sh1ves Joyce IS phys1cal educatlon teacher and coach at Clear Spring Hlgh Her team has won the Eastern States Champ1onsh1p One man purchas1ng the paper seems very 1nterested 1n the art1c1e He IS recogmzed as James Murray pr1nc1pal of C H S He walks toward the beaut1ful 1mmense new school bu1ld1ng and at the door he meets the Home Economlcs teacher Ruby Mart1n S1nce Dale w1ll always be a farmer Ruby mayored 1n home ec Beslde the school a very 1ndustr1ous person 1S pound1ng naxls h1gh up among the framework of a large apartment house The carpenter Edgar Hawbecker IS bu1ld1ng the apartments for Dor1s Gordon who marr1ed Jack Reynard Colleen Poole who marr1ed Carl Houpt Kathleen Sword married to Ted Hoffman and Genev1eve Hofe who marr1ed Merle Houpt These g1r1s are all keep1ng house but Genev1eve who IS postm1stress at Clear Spr1ng Post Offmce Across the street from tlus structure is a service station A large neat s1gn says 'Super Duper Service Stat1on owned and operated by B111 Carpenter F1x1ng Flats a Spec1alty A large streamlmed l1mous1ne pulls up to the gas tanks B111 hurr1es out and speaks a cheery greet1ng to the gentleman 1n the car callmg h1rn Pete It IS Glenn Younker ovmer of a soap factory He has h1S car servlced by the fr1endly dealer and dr1ves to h1s factory Th1s prosperous manufacturer pauses outs1de the door and proudly reads his s1gn Pete s Sweet Soap Guaranteed to Float N C J EJ-5 1 rl XVI! ! Il'lS1de the factory a surprise awaits Pete His cousin, Donald Younker now a general 1n the Umted States Army who IS on a vacation, visits the factory They 1ndulge 1n a long conversation telling of Don's heroic deeds in a battle waged between Pecktonv1lle and Parkhead Through Don's courage and bravery, Peck tonville emerged v1ctor1ous Pete suddenly remembers that a soap order has not been sent He instructs his Manager of D1str1but1ons Larry Revell, to see that the shipment goes out immediately Larry, a dependable worker g1ves the mstructions to Edward Trumpower, a truckdr1ver for the concern Ed a very skillful driver has the soap to Reed s Department Store in no time The store IS ovmed by Els1e Reed who started as a salesgirl The aSS1St3Ilt manager Anna Mxlls hurries up and down the a1sles giv1ng instructions to the salesladles She hears the phone and answers it Pete has called to apo1og1ze for the delay 1n the delivery of the soap The phone service IS very good because the ch1ef operator V1olet Carbaugh is on duty All customers are pleased w1th Wolet s fme serv1ce Anna again goes back to her work and speaks to a salesg1rl 1n the household department She IS Dorothy Chaney W1lbur st1ll hasn t proposed but Dott1e never loses hope Bes1de Reed s store IS a floral shop Owner of the shop is Sally Hart Sally is out but her saleslady Alpha Flanagan IS wa1t1ng on a young man in cowboy boots Th1s man IS Leon Trumpower and he can t dec1de whether Sh1rley would like a potted cactus or some cut flowers He prefers the cactus but Alpha tr1es to persuade him to buy roses They are talking over l'.l'l1S matter when a tall dark haired lady walks in It 1S Faye Clark She IS now a very busy housekeeper and SOC13.11tG of the Clty Faye orders an orch1d corsage It seems that she plans to attend a concert at the Clear Spr1ng Opera House in the evening and must be appropnately dressed And no wonder she wants to be well dressed Appearing at the opera house 1S the romantlc tenor Davld Walrath, w1th Llly Pons Dav1d s appearance IS qulte an event for the entlre c1ty s1nce Clear Spring was h1s home town before he went to New York to study opera Fay starts home and as she passes a bLuld1ng she hears screams G1anc1ng xn the window she sees Mildred Bloyer holding a child in a chair while a dentist works Mildred is the dent1st's ass1stant The sight IS too much for Fay so she walks on As she passes the Clear Spring General Hospital she sees Katy Hart entering Katy is going on duty in the hospitalwhere she is superintendent of nurses As Katy goes through the corridor she sees Io Arm Troupe a registered nurse skillfully bandaging the arm of Doris Yetter Doris is a stewardess and as she stepped from the plane she slipped and sprained her arm With Io Ann s expert care she will be back on the plane very shortly Katy has come to relieve Jo Ann of her duty Io, very exhausted from her day s work, walks home She passes the campus of Clear Spring University This is a fine college and has f1ne instructors Two of them walk across the campus from their classrooms They are Allta Sites professor of Greek and Barbara Rhodes Professor of Ancient History They are glad to get out into the open away from the classrooms and sit peafle fully under the trees The sun sets and the evening breeze blows gently as the contented Clear Spring citizens settle down at the end of another perfect day :ldv-ed Bio er D0 l5 ycffer - 9 . . , - . . . . x . . - 1 - J 9 , . . . y 1 9 s - . , . . . . . , . . , . a y . . , . . . - a . . . . . . , , . . . . . 7 r . r . . 1 . . x r ' .
