But with the aid of those persons who felt the initiative, resourcefulness, loyalty, and love for their school this task was surpassed, I personally would like to express my sincere gratitude to those two persons who devoted their time in order to make the '69 HORNET possible. Mrs. B. L. Davis, our beloved Commerce teacher, thank-you for the unselfish hours spent recording our assets and debts. Mr. E. R. Mason, our patient Science instructor, thank-you for the endless time consum- ing problems you faced and solved. To the Yearbook Staff, thank-you for your concentrated effort to make this year- book a reality and not a dream, Mr. : Tyler, our gratitude for all the coopera- tion you bestowed upon us is deeply appreciated. To our fellow schoolmates, as well as Faculty members of Clear Run H.S.; I wish to thank-you for your help in the publication of this yearbook, As I reminisce the hours of the day spent working together with the Staff toward one common goal, I feel a warm ray Of pride within me. In order to show the appreciation felt for the aid received, the Senior Class of 1969 dedicates the '69 HORNET to the Faculty members and entire Student Body of Clear Run ELS: Editor-in-Chief ue bor DEDICATION We, the members of the Senior Class of 1969 with love, a mixed emotion of happiness that we have reached a milestone; and sadness that we must depart, do dedicate this the '1969' ' HORNET to our beloved Principal, Faculty, and Student Body. Our Principal and members of the faculty have served as patient and experienced guides in directing our steps toward the realm of the future. You are to be commended and congratulated for a job well done. Soon you will go forth into the world to do and to dare. This is not the end but what I hope will be a great beginning. Life's change and conflicts must be met with vigor, courage, de- termination and understanding. Accept your responsibilities and move forward. Keep love in- creasingly ardent that you may be constrained in all that is associated with self-denial. Let meekness be the eye, patience the expression of your countenance, kindness the language of the tongue and let your whole soul be clothed in humility, as was your Heavenly Father. Hold fast to all that was good that you received at Clear Run and live justly and serve diligently. May success crown your efforts as you go forth lighting candles in the dark, so that, others may also see. George W. Tyler eee w). Syl Principal Mrs. Sallie M. But at least we've reached our goal. Thanks to the teachers, principal, everyone who has helped us strive. Now graduation day is here. Clear Run High, fare ye well. Sadness fills our hearts to know that we must go. How we'll miss Clear Run High. Eyes fill with tears to think that paths must part. So we bid sad farewell. But so the days go swiftly by, the memories will never die. Memories our hearts will swell. Clear Run High, fare ye well. Jessie Fennell Glennwood Herring Jacqueline Sellers aD CLASS HISTORY In September, nineteen hundred and sixty-five, a band of Pilgrims solely consisting of 109 freshmen, embarked upon a new frontier. They were a devoted band of explorers and seekers of wisdom. They had planned for this exploration for a long time, they having collected a goodly amount of necessary baggage in the way of bits of geography, sections of arithmetic, bunches of dates fresh from the tree of history, and a supply of grammar, Each had the required ticket--a certificate of promotion from the mother country, the eighth grade. For purposes of protection and mutual advancement they organized into three sections having as commanders Mrs. B. L. Davis, Miss C. E. Fennell, and Mrs. L. A. Bert. In spite of their greenness they made rapid progress, obtaining strong holds in Algebra I, English, History and other important en- trenchments of the realm. The chief governing official of these pioneers was: Ernest Carr, and without serious catastrophies they came to the end of the first era. At the beginning of the second era, the freshmen advanced and took possession of the strong- holds of the sophomores, this tribe having succeeded to the territory occupied by the juniors. The chief government official of this group of pioneers was Jacqueline Sellers. Rebellions of small import arose over occasional faculty rulings, and murmurings were heard because of the heavy tax imposed on their minds by the lengths of lessons, but they were settled by peaceful arbitration. So the second era drew to an end. With the beginning of the third era several changes were noted. The valiant bands who had entered as freshmen and conquered the lessons of the sophomores, now advanced to and occupied the territory of the juniors. To preside over them as president, they did elect one Jacqueline Sellers, who did walk before them. This era was characterized by contentions and external strife because of the many members who were struggling for prominence in, scholarship, bas- ketball, oratory, typewriting, state musicals, and the highlight of this era was the Junior-Senior Prom with the rejuvenating theme, ''A Roman Holiday. The fourth era was marked by important reconstruction, for the humble band who had in- vaded the freshmen trenches three years before, now became Seniors, the mighty leaders of the realm and the invincible class of 1969. The sagacious Brenda De Vane was elected president. The seniors, numbering 62, did greatly impress themselves upon the lower tribes among the pioneers of learning and became much noted for their ability and diligence. Especially did they endear themselves to the faculty who gave much effort to fitting them for the great con- test of graduation. Great occasions were the Senior trip, class night, and commencement ex- ercises. Thus closed the fourth era, and with their Motto--''A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; And a man of understanding shall attain unto wise council. (Proverbs 1:5). Like sands of the hour glass, so are the days of our lives. As the hour glass turns, the light glows on the sand grains of the class of ''69'' where we have made great ac- complishments in the world of 79 , The first grain of sand falls and the light glows on Brenda Boone, where she is found at her desk position as personal secretary to the Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C. While Brenda is making life for herself, we find another sand grain, Gwendolyn Bryant, dedicating herself to those that need her most, the patients at Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. Gwen holds her own in the Registered Nurse department. Jacqueline Sellers is on the staff at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jackie is serving to the best of her ability as Dean of Sociology. The sand grains continue to fall and the light reflects on Henry Treadwell still smooth sailing Little Bud enjoying bachelor life as he leaves in his 79 Camero from a hard day's work at General Motors, Inc. in Detroit, Michigan where he is chief accountant. Along with Henry, William Beatty is also in Detroit working at the same place, only he is an automotive technician. Boy! the smallest grain has fallen. Rufus Peterson isn't small any more now that he plays with the Yankees of New York. They battle victoriously with the Dodgers of California. Oh! Annie Robinson is doing fine; she's head of the Social Department here in Sampson County. We see another grain and discover that Glenn Washington is happy being the business manager at J. P. Stevens Fabrics Inc. in Wallace, North Carolina. Our sands travel all over the world. Dianne DeVane has just flown in with TWA airlines where she is a stewardess seeing the world. She is returning from Paris, France. The lights brighen and beam on Roy Lee Peterson as he instructs a class at Bull City Barber College in Durham, North Carolina. He is still the Roy that we all know so well, easy going and ever-loving. Roy is thinking of joining Chamberlain, he can never forget basketball. Would you believe that we have sand grains still here at Clear Run? Well, George Williams and Don Newkirk are still here. George teaches Physical Education and he is also the coach. His team is also as good as the team of '69. Don is the biologist here and enjoys his job very much. One grain has shown Mr. McLaurin how much he appreciated his basketball drills. Lynwood Peterson is now playing with the Celtics and enjoys working with Bill Russell. Glowing and reflecting the light stops. Valerie Merritt is seen as she enters the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. as Vice-Librarian. Valerie loves life in Washington and doing that type of work. Brenda DeVane is now on the staff at Union High School and teaches biology, chemistry, and physics. After attending school at Kitrell College in Kitrell, North Carolina Audrey Merritt decided to make Kitrell her home. She is personal secretary there at the college. Turning into light another grain falls and makes hit tunes. Glenwood Herring is heard instead of being seen as he sings from his soul at the Apollo Theater in New York City. He has moved Joe Simmon out of business. Traveling through the hour glass we spot Mary Fryar in her classroom at one of the largest schools in New York City. Flowing and glowing, the next grain Gail Spearman finds being a dental hygienist the right occupation for her. Do you listen to WUKKB coming from Garland, North Carolina? If you do the voice that you hear is that of David Boykin who has his own program Jive Junction , recorded for different strokes for different folks. Iris Smith another sand grain of the class of '69 is now a telephone operator in New York City. Georgia Robinson finds working with Dr. Mer- ritt of Clinton, North Carolina a pleasure. Atha Henry and Saretta Newkirk always -enjoyed helping others; they now work in Raleigh, North Carolina and do fine in the social work department. Walking through the corridors of Duplin General Hospital we find two more of our sands, Lizzie Newkirk and Hollice Herring busy at work as prac- tical nurses. Oh! just look another bright light and more sand grains. Lucille Fennell and Glenda DeVane both hold their heads high as they work at Sears Roebuck Co. in Fayetteville, North Carolina and J. P. Stevens Co. in Wallace, North Carolina, respectively. Another grain rises and there is Leonard Murphy. He now owns his own barber shop in Garland, North Carolina. Gosh! Vera Murphy is doing fine for herself at A P Stores. She is the economist of the stores in Clinton, Wallace, and Burgaw, North Carolina. As secretary at County Wide Sewing Company, Resia Newton does fine. She loves her work, there is so much fun in it. Joseph West, Sherman Herring and Alonza Johnson have made our country proud of them. Joseph is returning from active duty in Vietnam while Sherman has been assigned to special forces in Vietnam. Boys, we the members of the hour glass are very proud of you also. Beaming and gleaming, the hour glass turns to Seymour Johnson Air Forces Base where Larry Lamb has just rated Staff Sergeant. Ruth Burns, Gale Sellars and Rosa Herring are Registered nurses at Sampson Memorial Hospital, and Cape Fear Valley Hospital, caring for the sick means a lot to those girls. Our sand grains are punching out, Annie Marie Melvin is now an IBM punchboard operator at J. C. Penney's Store in Wilmington, North Car- olina. Well, we see that Mack Ray Mitchell has stopped singing and has now become an artist. Mack works hard at his job, drawing comic strips for Warner Brothers pro- 29 duction. He may even produce a new comic character. Our sand gains could not completely leave our town of Garland. Jerome Bronson now does accounting at First National Bank in Garland, North Carolina. We have glamorous sand grains. Dianne Tatum is the beautiful model all you girls see in Seventeen Magazine. Harris Imes, James Burney, Rodney Johnson, James F. Carr, and James D. Carr are barbers. They all work in a barber shop at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Benny Peter- son and Waddell Williams are the managers of that barber shop. Now that the Carters have retired from the funeral business James Bannermen, and Earnest Carr have taken over their business in Garland with a small business in Harrells. All the embalming is done by Jimmy himself. Ah! the grains contained in this hour glass. Curtis Fennell has just been promoted to First Sergeant. He is stationed in Fayetteville, N.C. at Fort Bragg. Carl McNeil also does artistic work; he works with Screen Gems produc - tion. Patsy Lamb, and Annette Simpson now hold their own as IBM operators in Phila., Penna. Willie Boykin, another sand grain finds working at LaSalle's Beauty school the perfect life for him. Carl :Murphy is now a scientist. We all wonder what he will invent. Luther Robinson is the new Medical Doctor. So as the hour glass completely fills, so are we as we see the accomplishments of our class. We shed tears of joy with each falling grain.
