HISTORY OF CLEAR RUN SCHOOL The location of Clear Run High School was not an easy task. The Sampson County Board of Education with assistance from the State Board of Education and local interested persons sought to find a suitable site to serve the south eastern area of Sampson County. The one and two teacher schools in the area had previously been taken to Garland and Bland schools. Much opposition came against the idea of a central high school structure. Both areas, Garland and Bland, organized pressure groups in an effort to obtain an adequate high school in each area. The final decision came from the local Board of Education. A beautiful site was purchased at the crossroads of 411 and 1125, equal distance from Garland and Bland. The building of the plant began. In September 1957 Clear Run High School opened with former high school students from Garland and Bland. The enrollment was approximately 266, with ten high school teachers, including the principal, Mr. F. R. Jones. The graduating class of 1958 worked with one sponsor. Thirty seven students graduating class. Seven years later, 1964, two sponsors worked with the graduating class. Sixty four students graduated. Each year the high school enrollment increased. Today, after eight years of school growth, there is an enrollment of 371 students. The number of.teachers have increased from ten to fifteen, including the principal. During the eight years of the school four principals have served. Mr. F. R. Jones served four terms, Mr. R. W. Johnson one term; Mr. C. E. Johnson one term, and Mr. C. E. Torrey is now serving his second term. Of the nine teachers who began teaching at Clear Run in 1957 four have remained. They are Mrs. Mary C. DeVane, Mrs. P. S. White, Mr. Edward W. Gray and Miss C. E. Fennell. For the four years that Mr. F. R. Jones served as principal of Clear Run, the idea, We are one big family here at Clear Run was instilled into the minds of students and faculty. That idea still lingers.

IN MEMORIAM CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark! For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, Ihope to see my pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.
