With the passage of years you may look back upon this school as the time when the darkness of ignorance suddenly became bright with the gleam of knowledge. To preserve a record of these moments and the countless other experiences of you and your class- mates, this annual strives to capture the “eyes and mind of the scholarship, the leadership, the activities, and the character of Clear Run High School. CONTENTS DEDICATION PUBLICATION IN MEMORIAM ADMINISTRATION PACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS FEATURES SPORTS COMMUNITY GROUPS SCHOOL ST AFF LIFE AT CLEAR RUN ADVERTISEMENTS DEDICATION Rest not! Life is sweeping by Go and dare, before you die; Something mighty and sublime Leave behind to conquer time! -Goethe There exists in the life of Clear Run High School the spirit of a man whose presence is felt from the lowest blades of grass which covers the campus to the highest branches of trees which surround it. There also exists in the life of the school the force of a man whose inspiration appears in the form of the sincerity of his smile and in the space of his firm handclasp. With this spirit and force, there is a heart so big that it can harbor the problems of unknown freshmen and upperclassmen, The accomplishments, achievements and honors of this man are many and great, and to list them would prove embarrassing for him; for he is not a man who is conscious of his past laurels, but one who moves with time. He labors faithfully and industriously for the good of our school, but seldom reaches the spotlight. We, the Annual Staff, find it fitting and proper to dedicate this 1965 Hornet to the man who has given of his spirit, his force, and his heart to Clear Run High School, MR. C. E. TORREY, our beloved principal. Ingrid S. IN MEMORIAM CROSSING THE BAR Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark! For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, Ihope to see my pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Alfred, Lord Tennyson Lonnie Ray Burney HISTORY OF CLEAR RUN SCHOOL The location of Clear Run High School was not an easy task. The Sampson County Board of Education with assistance from the State Board of Education and local interested persons sought to find a suitable site to serve the south eastern area of Sampson County. The one and two teacher schools in the area had previously been taken to Garland and Bland schools. Much opposition came against the idea of a central high school structure. Both areas, Garland and Bland, organized pressure groups in an effort to obtain an adequate high school in each area. The final decision came from the local Board of Education. A beautiful site was purchased at the crossroads of 411 and 1125, equal distance from Garland and Bland. The building of the plant began. In September 1957 Clear Run High School opened with former high school students from Garland and Bland. The enrollment was approximately 266, with ten high school teachers, including the principal, Mr. F. R. Jones. The graduating class of 1958 worked with one sponsor. Thirty seven students graduating class. Seven years later, 1964, two sponsors worked with the graduating class. Sixty four students graduated. Each year the high school enrollment increased. Today, after eight years of school growth, there is an enrollment of 371 students. The number of.teachers have increased from ten to fifteen, including the principal. During the eight years of the school four principals have served. Mr. F. R. Jones served four terms, Mr. R. W. Johnson one term; Mr. C. E. Johnson one term, and Mr. C. E. Torrey is now serving his second term. Of the nine teachers who began teaching at Clear Run in 1957 four have remained. They are Mrs. Mary C. DeVane, Mrs. P. S. White, Mr. Edward W. Gray and Miss C. E. Fennell. For the four years that Mr. F. R. Jones served as principal of Clear Run, the idea, We are one big family here at Clear Run was instilled into the minds of students and faculty. That idea still lingers. 4h hy ae 4 bates e gta Gs ee Principal Government Staff Faculty COUNTY OFFICIALS w Ss oO WS} Sg oO =I a oH mM oO a, (| wn od a “4 Go Go oO A HH — = Y a oO 4a) Gq oO w a “4 mH oO Qu 3 Ww we n “Yn Sa a —! ° fe) eS vo 4 ed wa 5 OUR PRINCIPAL Message From the Principal Education is one of the most important factors of your future. You are building the foundation of life ahead by what you work for today. Whether it is hard sincere studying or irresponsible attitude toward what is being taught to you. In an age such as ours with ever increasing knowledge of all things, it is a must that you have an adequate education to meet the future. The need for an adequate education is even more necessary than ever before, if the citizens of the future are to stand up against the evil forces that are trying to overcome them. You are now in the midst of a time that can possible be the turning point of your lives. Your minds are maturing through education without your being aware of it, you are building the founda - tion of your character. These traits or habits will be carried with you throughout your lives. It is indeed something to think about seriously. I think that ones education is something one should be proud of and I am hoping that you are looking forward to years of education to come. I only hope that by the time you have graduated from High School, you will have learned half of what you were suppose to learn, and that you might be educated enough to become a worthy American citizen of the future. Counselor Ramseur confers with Jessie Wright. THE HEART OF OUR SCHOOL... It purchased an activity bus last year and plans to burn the mortgage on the bus on or around March 1965. 85 REFLECTIVE THOUGHTS As I think back, remembering when I first became editor of the 1965 Hornet, an idea came to my mind--no, in that moment I knew that this 1965 Hornet would become a living thing, more than that a dream come true, But in making that dream come true I encountered joy, happiness, sadness, and tears--many times the feeling of anxiety, depression, and disappointment. Just as Hamlet said, To be, or not to be: that is the question.” I too asked myself this question in its many forms; I knew what I wanted and so did the staff. Through all of it many of you came to my aid saying, “Don't give up, we are with you. And that wonderful staff I worked with; you gave me the incentive to keep me going, as you often said, to keep me firing.” But, there is more in’making a yearbook than what I felt as a person. Selection of a theme, pictures, layouts, the number of pages, copy, the cover, all of these. Ihad an idea that this yearbook should represent the student body in its entirety. A staff has to be cooperative, hard working, full of ideas, believing as you believe, willing to give all and put everything they have into the yearbook. There was another staff also whose names do not appear as staff members or as a staff. They worked hard giving much of their time, this staff composed of faculty and students who worked separately but toward a common goal. The yearbook staff and I wish to thank each and every one of you, for all that you did in making this yearbook. Mrs. Davis, Commerce teacher, thank you for all that you did in helping us. To our fellow schoolmates, your efforts too are deeply appreciated. To our fellow schoolmates as well as the Faculty and Staff members of the Clear Run Family, the yearbook staff and I wish tothank you for helping to make this yearbook more than a vision or a dream; you helped to make it a reality. Without the help of these persons and many others I am sure that we could not have completed the job that we set out to do. But there is one whom I am sure that all of you know and without him none of this could have come about. Principal Torrey, I am thinking of you. You played a far greater part in this yearbook than any of us; without your yes -- If you can do it and you feel it can be done, then it is perfectly all right with me -- this 1965 Hornet would only be a vision. So now I close these thoughts with tears of happiness, hoping that we have done a job worthwhile -- In years to come as you turn these pages I hope they will bring memories of CLEAR RUN HIGH -- (Ole C.R.H.).
