What is a friend? I will tell you. It is a person with whom you dare to be yourself, your soul can be naked with him. He seems to ask of you to put on nothing, only to be what you are. He does not want you to be better or worse. When you are with him, you feel as a prisoner feels who has been declared Innocent. You do not have to be on your guard. You can say what you think, so long as it is genuinely you. He understands those contradictions in your nature that lead others to misjudge you. With him you breathe freely. You can avow your little vanities and envies and hates and vicious sparks, your meannesses and absurdities and, in opening them up to him they are lost, dissolved on the white ocean of his loyalty. He understands. You do not have to be careful. You can abuse him, neglect him, tolerate him. Best of all, you can keep still with him. It makes no matter. He likes you-he is like fire that purges to the bone. He understands. He understands. You can weep with him, sin with him, laugh with him, pray with him. Conference CHAMPS, Paul, and Jeff. The return from Madison. Our Wrestlers really did prove that Determination does equal success At every tournament we had many place winners and Champions. They took 2nd in Conference and in Regionals. Four of them, Paul G., Jeff J., Bob C., and Dean F., went on to sectionals. Jeff and Paul took 1st and continued on to the state competition where Paul took 1st in class C, and Jeff was runner-up in his weight. They deserved all they got and we are VERY proud of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 52 Special Sports Page The football team made it for the first time ever to the state playoffs. They were rated 2nd in the state, and were conference champs. Paul Bingea was selected to play in the state Shrine football game. 53 The basketball team made it to sectionals for the 4th time in school history. They were regional champs. Special Sports Page This year's wrestling team had a 10-3 record. They took 4th at the Rice Lake tournament, 2nd at Hudson and placed 2nd in conference. Paul Gunderson was class C state champ and Jeff Jungmann took 2nd. C.L. was 3rd in state. Mr. Zauft commented that it was a great year. We had a 1st time state champ and placed highest ever in state. Paul wrestled in a West German exchange and won with a pin. Mr. Zauft said that there are many good returning lettermen for next year. The girls provided a lot of competition for each of their opponents, and individual improvement and performances were impressive at every meet. At a cold and rainy conference meet early in the season, Laurie Klatt placed fifth in the long jump, Judi Buhr place sixth in the high jump, Debbie Eckwall finished sixth in the 200 meter, Nina Belknap third and Renee' Knutson fifth in the 1600 meter, and Renee' and Nina finished fourth and fifth in the 3200 meter.
